PURPOSE: LigaSure is a bipolar diathermy system, which achieves vessel sealing with reduced thermal spread. The device has been used successfully in abdominal operations and because of its features, it has been applied recently in thyroid surgery to minimize the risk of complications such as laryngeal nerve palsy and hypocalcemia, and also to reduce the operating time. Neurological diseases and COVID-19: prospective analyses using the UK Biobank

COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease-19) may present with neurological signs, but whether people already affected by neurological conditions are at a higher risk of contracting COVID-19 is still not known. We, therefore, aimed to investigate the association of previously diagnosed neurological conditions with COVID-19. 502,536 community-dwelling UK Biobank participants (54.4% male, mean age 56.6 ± 10.3 years) were included. Among these, 57,463 participants had a diagnosis of neurological conditions (11.43%) and a total of 1326 COVID-19-positive cases were identified (0.26%). Because of frequent postoperative alterations in voice, many surgeons include laryngoscopy as a routine examination before/after thyroid surgery. The risk of abducens palsy after diagnostic lumbar puncture.

Abducens palsy occasionally has been observed after diagnostic lumbar puncture (DLP).1-3 Its risk is not exactly known. We are aware of only one report, which mentions not a single case among 1,341 DLPs when using 22-gauge needles.4 At our clinic, an average of 800 inpatients a year undergo DLP. We usually use 22-gauge needles, and occasionally (in less than 5%), 20-gauge needles. Over a 14.5-year period, we saw two patients with abducens palsy—one unilateral, one bilateral—after DLP. A test of the effort equalization hypothesis in children with cerebral palsy who have an asymmetric gait.

Healthy people can walk nearly effortlessly thanks to their instinctively adaptive gait patterns that tend to minimize metabolic energy consumption. However, the economy of gait is severely impaired in many neurological disorders such as stroke or cerebral palsy (CP). Moreover, self-selected asymmetry of impaired gait does not seem to unequivocally coincide with the minimal energy cost, suggesting the presence of other adaptive origins. Children with cerebral palsy (CP) have various gait impairments, and consequently their gait is less stable compared to typically developed (TD) controls. Gait kinematics are also affected more in CP than TD by concurrent dual and cognitive tasks.
