Programming of Intestinal Epithelial Differentiation by IL-33 Derived from Pericryptal Fibroblasts in Response to Systemic Infection.
2016
SummaryThe intestinal epithelium constitutes an efficient barrier against the microbial flora. Here, we demonstrate an unexpected function of IL-33 as a regulator of epithelial barrier functions. Mice lacking IL-33 showed decreased Paneth cell numbers and lethal systemic infection in response to Salmonella typhimurium. IL-33 was produced upon microbial challenge by a distinct population of pericryptal fibroblasts neighboring the intestinal stem cell niche. IL-33 programmed the differentiation of epithelial progenitors toward secretory IEC including Paneth and goblet cells. Finally, IL-33 suppressed Notch signaling in epithelial cells and induced expression of transcription factors governing…
The ‘Shellome’ of the Crocus Clam Tridacna crocea Emphasizes Essential Components of Mollusk Shell Biomineralization
2021
Molluscan shells are among the most fascinating research objects because of their diverse morphologies and textures. The formation of these delicate biomineralized structures is a matrix-mediated process. A question that arises is what are the essential components required to build these exoskeletons. In order to understand the molecular mechanisms of molluscan shell formation, it is crucial to identify organic macromolecules in different shells from diverse taxa. In the case of bivalves, however, taxon sampling in previous shell proteomics studies are focused predominantly on representatives of the class Pteriomorphia such as pearl oysters, edible oysters and mussels. In this study, we hav…
The MAM-CAP table: A new tool for monitoring panel performances
2014
Abstract Assessor performances in sensory analysis are usually represented by three indicators: repeatability, discrimination and agreement. However, assessors can also differ on the range of their scores, the so-called “scaling effect”. Brockhoff, Schlich, and Skovgaard (2013) proposed the mixed assessor model (MAM) which, as the original assessor model ( Brockhoff & Skovgaard, 1994 ), takes this effect into account, but also allows for the product effect to be tested against a new interaction free of the scaling effect. The present paper proposes a unified system for monitoring assessor and panel performances based on the MAM. In addition to the product effect (tested at panel and individ…

Financial Structure of the Family Business: Evidence From a Group of Small Spanish Firms
2007
This article presents empirical evidence on the determinants of the financial behavior of small family businesses and their differences from nonfamily small businesses. Taking into account two consolidated financial approaches, (1) the trade-off theory and (2) the pecking order theory, several hypotheses on the financial behavior of both groups of firms have been tested. By estimating these models through panel data methodology, using a sample of Spanish family businesses together with another control group of nonfamily businesses, we have obtained results confirming that a business's family nature does lead it to employ financial policy different from the rest of businesses. Furthermore, …

3D Technology for the Artworks Handling
2022
In this study we present how to create a box for the transport of artworks put in place during the restauration of three polymateric sculpures made with trapanese technique called ‘Legno, Tela e Colla’. Thanks to 3D technology, we created a ‘digital twin’ of manufacts that allowed us to design and build supports and boxes for different uses. In this way, it was possible not to touch the artworks directly, so without risks for them, and to work even at a distance without the works, also in different places.
