María Magdalena. Continuidad y variación en la cultura audiovisual (1897-2014)
2017
2022
The figure of the amateur is emerging on the contemporary semiosphere, both in terms of scientific research and in the artistic domain. In this paper we discuss this phenomenon from the textual analysis of a song by Paolo Conte. We thus deal with the relations of mutual inter semiotic translation between music and image by showing how, in Conte, a musical compo sition can, at the level of utterance, become the theory of a given pictorial making and, at the level of enunciation, be transposed into a drawing that predicates it by its own expressive and semantic means. But also how, in the reverse sense, a certain form of life of the amateur visual artist can be transposed into a precise devic…
SUCCESSO E DECLINO DELLA SCUOLA GENOVESIANA IN SICILIA SUL FINIRE DEL XVIII E IL PRINCIPIO DEL XIX SECOLO
2021
In the Sicily of late 18th century, during the harshest contraposition between viceroyal government and parliamentary baronage, the Genovesian school gains a great success on the island among scholars and academicians as well as ruling class. In this particular moment of Sicilian history, the theme of reforms is at the top of the political agenda and the thought of Genovesi and his scholars spurs projects to reform the old institutions of the Kingdom, to modernize agriculture, raise productivity and introduce a fairer taxation. The reputation of the Neapolitan school is so well-known that all the parties are inspired by Its economic and political proposals. Furthermore, the Crown and the ba…
Silence et langage du corps dans le cinéma de Pier Paolo Pasolini
2015
In Pasolini’s films, the dialogue may be removed from the narrative of the film or even reduced significantly. It is not uncommon to see sequences without dialogue, where meaning effects are attributed exclusively to visual impact. In Oedipus Rex (1967), Pasolini combines a vision closer to painting with the captions prevalent throughout the film. The captions reveal the absence of a voice and mimic the identity of a third person. The inscriptions, such as “Where are you going, my youth? Where, my life?” deceive the continuity of images, and produce the same effect of an intervention of the first person narrator in a written text. This technique epitomises two film eras: Modern and Silent C…
Paolozzi & Wittgenstein: The Artist and the Philosopher
2019
Conceived as a collection of essays, this edited volume exceptionally brings together philosophers and art historians of different geographic and generational backgrounds to discuss Wittgenstein and Paolozzi, giving voice to a variety of disciplinary approaches and shaping diverse topics that may arouse the interest of a twofold audience. As a matter of fact, the book offers both a unique take on Paolozzi’s oeuvre, reassessing his pivotal importance in the second half of the twentieth century—especially as far as medium diversity and the use of popular culture are concerned—and a convenient opportunity to explore Wittgenstein’s thought related to visual arts and his influence on contemporar…

«Mostruoso a vedere un Pergolesi coi baffi». Il mito in scena nel 1857 tra Milano (Solera - Ronchetti Monteviti) e Napoli (Quercia - Serrao)
2015
During the Nineteenth Century, the fame reached by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was so large that the historical figure of the composer born in Jesi was transformed in a “dramatis persona”. Pergolesi appears as a character in two different operas dated to 1857. The first one is “Pergolese” by Temistocle Solera and Stefano Ronchetti Monteviti, performed in Milan at the Teatro alla Scala; the second one is “Pergolesi”, a “melodramma semiserio” by Fedrico Quercia set to music by Paolo Serrao and staged at the Teatro del Fondo in Naples. The two works mix historical elements with details drawn from pure fantasy. Their main purpose is to exalt the figure of the unfortunate and tormented artist, t…
