Abstract The white pigment titanium dioxide is widely used in foodstuff and cosmetics mainly because it provides whitening effect, it acts as a physical filter in sunscreen products, and due to its photocatalytic properties. As food additive, it is labeled as E171 (Europe) and INS171 (United States), and its use was approved in 1966 by the US Food and Drug Administration and in 1969 by the European Union. Pectin is the methylated ester of polygalacturonic acid and presents a wide range of applications in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products as well as in food industry such as gelling agent in fruit-based products, stabilizer in fruit and milk beverages and fruit filling for bakery and confectionary products, among others. By focussing on a case of collective poisoning in 1865, four features of forensic cultures are analysed: technologies for detection, authorized voices, regulations in action and the predominant social anxieties. Local newspapers and archival documents kept in the medical academies of Barcelona and Madrid are analysed. The analysis shows the tensions between various types of proof employed in legal medicine and the ambiguities between epidemic diseases and poisoning accidents. In the first section, I review the fears caused by the cholera epidemic in 1865, which was the first explanation of the accident. [EN] This study describes a model-based method for real-time optimization of the key filtration parameters in a submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) treating urban wastewater (UWW) and UWW mixed with domestic food waste (FW). The method consists of an initial screening to find out adequate filtration conditions and a real-time optimizer applied to a periodically calibrated filtration model for minimizing the operating costs. In order to evaluate the potential aroma of some Portuguese grapes, several glycosidically bound aroma compounds of ten grape varieties grown in Evora, Alentejo, Portugal, were released, identified and quantified using gas chromatography–mass spectrophotometry. White varieties were Arinto, Perrum, Rabo-de-Ovelha, Roupeiro and Antao Vaz. Red varieties were Trincadeira, Aragonez, Tinta Caiada, Moreto and Castelao.
