Chemical Correlations Between Industrial Curds and Final Cheeses. Can Cheesemakers Standardise Productions?

2016

The chemical composition of milks and curds influences the microbial ecology and chemical features of produced cheeses. This statement is quite obvious because ‘normal’ cheeses—products with a prevailing ingredient, milk—are obtained by means of the transformation of the main raw material and the addition of minor components. Because of the possible scarcity of readily available milk in many regions or economic areas, the industry of milk and dairy products, including cheeses, has improved the production of ready-to-use curds. These products, also named ‘industrial curds’, are produced exclusively for further cheesemaking processes. For this reason, ready-to-use curds are pre-packaged with …

A new Neoplatyura Malloch from Finland (Diptera, Keroplatidae).

2014

The genus Neoplatyura Malloch is globally represented by 50 species, of which four are European species. In this article a new European Neoplatyura from Finland is described. The new species, Neoplatyura noorae Salmela, sp. n. is a dark brown species with tibial bristles arranged in rows. The new species is here reported from seven localities in Finnish Lapland. Based on available data, the new species occurs in mires, especially in calcareous rich fens.

Medical student ultrasound education: a WFUMB position paper, part I

2019

The introduction of ultrasound into medical student education is well underway in many locations around the world, but is still in its infancy or has yet to begin in others. Proper incorporation of ultrasound education into medical training requires planning and resources, both capital and human. In this article, we discuss the state of the art of ultrasound in medical education throughout the world, as well as various methodologies utilized to improve student education and to incorporate ultrasound into every facet of training. Experiences from various educational systems and available evidence regarding the impact of ultrasound education are summarized. Representing multiple societies and…

Representations of individuals in discourses oflaïcitéfromLe Monde: confirming or challenging the republican framework of identity?

2016

ABSTRACTIn recent decades, the notions of laicite and identity have been subjects of controversy in France. The two concepts have become sufficiently co-associated since the 1990s to ensure each almost systematically entails the other. Findings from previous studies have pointed out harmful implications of this pervasive association for minorities in France, especially Muslims. This study examines further the ways laicite and identity are interwoven by exploring who is represented (and how) in newspaper articles from Le Monde dealing with laicite. Informed by critical intercultural communication scholarship, intersectionality, and a Foucaultian approach to discourse, this study pays particu…

Adsorption and separation of black liquor-derived phenol derivatives using anion exchange resins

2017

Abstract Kraft black liquor is the major waste stream of the paper pulping industry. This stream is usually directly incinerated in such facilities for energy production and recycling of the inorganic chemicals involved. However, lignin and other low molecular organic fragments dissolved in black liquor give rise to a large variety of aromatic fine chemicals. Energetic use of black liquor and its components prevents the removal of these valuable compounds from the waste stream. We present an easy protocol for adsorption and selective desorption of low molecular phenol derivatives from black liquor depending on the composition of the desorption system. Furthermore, adsorption experiments in …

Influence of photo-oxidation on the performance and soil degradation of oxo- and biodegradable polymer-based items for agricultural applications

2021

Abstract The examination of the aging behavior of polymers, blends, composites, items, etc. under different environmental conditions is a priority issue for assessing the possible applications and establishing the lifetime. In agriculture, plastic items (mulch films, irrigation tubes, etc.) are widely used and subjected to solar UV exposure that can induce photo-oxidation on macromolecular chains. Therefore, weathering under outdoor conditions and accelerated degradation tests are performed for simulating aging processes during the lifetime of materials and select appropriate stabilizers to be used. In the last decades, oxo- and biodegradable polymers have been investigated and used in agri…

Novel isatin-derived molecules activate p53 via interference with Mdm2 to promote apoptosis

2018

International audience; The p53 protein is a key tumor suppressor in mammals. In response to various forms of genotoxic stress p53 stimulates expression of genes whose products induce cell cycle arrest and/or apoptosis. An E3-ubiquitin ligase, Mdm2 (mouse-double-minute 2) and its human ortholog Hdm2, physically interact with the amino-terminus of p53 to mediate its ubiquitin-mediated degradation via the proteasome. Thus, pharmacological inhibition of the p53-Mdm2 interaction leads to overall stabilization of p53 and stimulation of its anti-tumorigenic activity. In this study we characterize the biological effects of a novel class of non-genotoxic isatin Schiff and Mannich base derivatives (…

High dynamic resistance elements based on a Josephson junction array

2020

A chain of superconductor–insulator–superconductor junctions based on Al–AlOx–Al nanostructures and fabricated using conventional lift-off lithography techniques was measured at ultra-low temperatures. At zero magnetic field, the low current bias dynamic resistance can reach values of ≈1011 Ω. It was demonstrated that the system can provide a decent quality current biasing circuit, enabling the observation of Coulomb blockade and Bloch oscillations in ultra-narrow Ti nanowires associated with the quantum phase-slip effect.
