SMS Messages in a Daily Finnish Newspaper : The Contect of Proverb Performances
2017
The article focuses on Finnish proverbs as a part of contemporary colloquial written language in everyday use and context. The article offers a view on what is happening with proverbs in the vernacular in Finnish everyday life. Most traditional Finnish proverbs originate from an agrarian context and still use agrarian language, even if nowadays they live in a new context with a new meaning. As empirical material this article uses a special case that demonstrates the use of proverbs in one Finnish newspaper: proverbs in SMS messages published as a letter to the editor in a newspaper. *** Avtorica se osredinja na finske pregovore kot del sodobnega pogovornega pisnega jezika v vsakdanji rabi i…
Enhanced oxidative stress and increased mitochondrial mass during Efavirenz-induced apoptosis in human hepatic cells
2010
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Efavirenz (EFV) is widely used in the treatment of HIV-1 infection. Though highly efficient, there is growing concern about EFV-related side effects, the molecular basis of which remains elusive. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH In vitro studies were performed to address the effect of clinically relevant concentrations of EFV (10, 25 and 50 mu M) on human hepatic cells. KEY RESULTS Cellular proliferation and viability were reduced in a concentration-dependent manner. Analyses of the cell cycle and several cell death parameters (chromatin condensation, phosphatidylserine exteriorization, mitochondrial proapoptotic protein translocation and caspase activation) revealed that EFV tr…
Roflumilast, a phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitor, alleviates bleomycin-induced lung injury
2009
Mandarin translation of abstract Background and purpose: The effects of a phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) inhibitor, roflumilast, on bleomycin-induced lung injury were explored in ‘preventive’ and ‘therapeutic’ protocols and compared with glucocorticoids. Experimental approach: Roflumilast (1 and 5 mg·kg−1·d−1, p.o.) or dexamethasone (2.5 mg·kg−1·d−1, p.o.) was given to C57Bl/6J mice from day 1 to 14 (preventive) or day 7 to 21 (therapeutic) after intratracheal bleomycin (3.75 U·kg−1). In Wistar rats, roflumilast (1 mg·kg−1·d−1, p.o.) was compared with methylprednisolone (10 mg·kg−1·d−1, p.o.) from day 1 to 21 (preventive) or from day 10 to 21 (therapeutic), following intratracheal instillatio…
Entrepreneurship Training and Self-Employment among University Graduates
2012
In economies characterized by low labor demand and high rates of youth unemployment, entrepreneurship training has the potential to enable youth to gain skills and create their own jobs. This paper presents experimental evidence on a new entrepreneurship track that provides business training and personalized coaching to university students in Tunisia. Undergraduates in the final year of licence appliquee were given the opportunity to graduate with a business plan instead of following the standard curriculum. This paper relies on randomized assignment of the entrepreneurship track to identify impacts on labor market outcomes one year after graduation. The analysis finds that the entrepreneur…
Lovastatin protects human endothelial cells from the genotoxic and cytotoxic effects of the anticancer drugs doxorubicin and etoposide
2006
Background and purpose: 3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors (statins) are frequently used lipid-lowering drugs. Moreover, they exert pleiotropic effects on cellular stress responses and death. Here, we analysed whether lovastatin affects the sensitivity of primary human endothelial cells (HUVEC) to the anticancer drug doxorubicin. Experimental approach: We investigated whether pretreatment of HUVEC with low dose of lovastatin influences the cellular sensitivity to doxorubicin. To this end, cell viability, proliferation and apoptosis as well as DNA damage-triggered stress response were analysed. Key results: Lovastatin reduced the cytotoxic potency of doxorub…
BioTIME: A database of biodiversity time series for the Anthropocene
2018
Abstract Motivation The BioTIME database contains raw data on species identities and abundances in ecological assemblages through time. These data enable users to calculate temporal trends in biodiversity within and amongst assemblages using a broad range of metrics. BioTIME is being developed as a community-led open-source database of biodiversity time series. Our goal is to accelerate and facilitate quantitative analysis of temporal patterns of biodiversity in the Anthropocene. Main types of variables included The database contains 8,777,413 species abundance records, from assemblages consistently sampled for a minimum of 2 years, which need not necessarily be consecutive. In addition, th…
'How Might Students engage with broader cultural questions relating to the circulation consumption, censorship, and reception of Decadent texts?'
2022
This paper explores the distribution of ‘Decadence’ ‘France’ ‘Decadent’ ‘French’ in British newspapers between 1890 and 1899 by relying on britishnewspaperarchive.co.ok It shows how the adjective was variously used in different contexts and how French Decadence was considered between 1880 and 1900.Not all 'decadence'/'decadent' was Decadent.Conversely exploring 'Décadence' in French periodicals yields different results but both digital repositories used in this research show that the noun was first used in a historical context.
Antibody-Capped Mesoporous Nanoscopic Materials: Design of a Probe for the Selective Chromo-Fluorogenic Detection of Finasteride
2012
[EN] The synthesis of capped mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) conjugated with an antibody (AB) as a gatekeeper has been carried out in order to obtain a delivery system able to release an entrapped cargo (dye) in the presence of a target molecule (antigen) to which the conjugated antibody binds selectively. In particular, MSN loaded with rhodamine B and functionalized on the external surface with a suitable derivative of N-(t-butyl)- 3-oxo-(5a,17b)-4-aza-androst-1-ene-17-carboxamide (finasteride) have been prepared (S1). The addition of polyclonal antibodies against finasteride induced capping of the pores due to the interaction with the anchored hapten-like finasteride derivative to g…
New zeolite-like RUB-5 and its related hydrous layer silicate RUB-6 structurally characterized by electron microscopy.
2020
RUB-5 and its related hydrous layer silicate RUB-6 were synthesized in the 1990s, but so far their structures have remained unknown due to their low crystallinity and disorder. The combination of 3D electron diffraction, X-ray powder diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, structural modelling and diffraction simulations has enabled a comprehensive description of these two nanomaterials, revealng a new framework topology and a unique silica polymorph.
Role of NK1 and NK2 receptors in mouse gastric mechanical activity
2006
1. The aim of the present study was to examine the role of NK1 and NK2 receptors in the control of mechanical activity of mouse stomach. In this view, the motor effects induced by NK1 and NK2 receptor agonists and antagonists were analyzed, measuring motility as intraluminal pressure changes in mouse-isolated stomach preparations. In parallel, immunohistochemical studies were performed to identify the location of NK1 and NK2 receptors on myenteric neurons and smooth muscle cells. 2. Substance P (SP) induced biphasic effects: a contraction followed by relaxation; neurokinin A (NKA) and [beta-Ala8]-NKA(4-10), selective agonist of NK2 receptors, evoked concentration-dependent contractions, whe…
