Noise-induced transitions in a stochastic Goodwin-type business cycle model

Abstract We motivate and specify a stochastic Goodwin-type business cycle model. Our analysis focusses on a subset of the parameter space where several attractors coexist. Applying a semi-numerical approach based on the stochastic sensitivity function and confidence domains due to Milstein and Ryashko (1995) , we study random transitions between stable attractors in the context of the Goodwin-type economy embedded in an uncertain environment. Relying on a mix of analytical considerations and simulations we demonstrate that under weak noise levels regime switching is a prominent feature in the presence of low saving rates. Vacuum induced berry phase: Theory and experimental proposal

We investigate quantum effects in geometric phases arising when a two-level system is interacting with a quantized electromagnetic field. When the system is adiabatically driven along a closed loop in the parameter space, signatures of the field quantization are observable in the geometric phase. We propose a feasible experiment to measure these effects in cavity QED and also analyse the semi-classical limit, recovering the usual Berry phase results.

Constraining effective rheology through parallel joint geodynamic inversion

Abstract The dynamics of crust and lithosphere is to a large extent controlled by its effective viscosity. Unfortunately, extrapolation of laboratory experiments indicates that viscosity is likely to vary over many orders of magnitude. Additional methods are thus required to constrain the effective viscosity of the present-day lithosphere using more direct geophysical observations. Constraints on ultra-high-energy cosmic ray sources from a search for neutrinos above 10 PeV with IceCube

We report constraints on the sources of ultra-high-energy cosmic ray (UHECR) above $10^{9}$ GeV, based on an analysis of seven years of IceCube data. This analysis efficiently selects very high energy neutrino-induced events which have deposited energies from $\sim 10^6$ GeV to above $10^{11}$ GeV. Two neutrino-induced events with an estimated deposited energy of $(2.6 \pm 0.3) \times 10^6$ GeV, the highest neutrino energies observed so far, and $(7.7 \pm 2.0) \times 10^5$ GeV were detected. The atmospheric background-only hypothesis of detecting these events is rejected at 3.6$\sigma$. Search for neutralino pair production at root s = 189 GeV

2001

A search for pair-production of neutralinos at a LEP centre-of-mass energy of 189 GeV gave no evidence for a signal. This limits the neutralino production cross-section and excludes regions in the parameter space of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM).

Frame covariant nonminimal multifield inflation

We introduce a frame-covariant formalism for inflation of scalar-curvature theories by adopting a differential geometric approach which treats the scalar fields as coordinates living on a field-space manifold. This ensures that our description of inflation is both conformally and reparameterization covariant. Modified post-bifurcation dynamics and routes to chaos from double-Hopf bifurcations in a hyperchaotic system

In order to understand the onset of hyperchaotic behavior recently observed in many systems, we study bifurcations in the modified Chen system leading from simple dynamics into chaotic regimes. In particular, we demonstrate that the existence of only one fixed point of the system in all regions of parameter space implies that this simple point attractor may only be destabilized via a Hopf or double Hopf bifurcation as system parameters are varied. Saddle-node, transcritical and pitchfork bifurcations are precluded. The normal form immediately following double Hopf bifurcations is constructed analytically by the method of multiple scales. FLUCTUATION-INDUCED LOCAL OSCILLATIONS AND FRACTAL PATTERNS IN THE LATTICE LIMIT CYCLE MODEL

The fractal properties of the Lattice Limit Cycle model are explored when the process is realized on a 2-dimensional square lattice support via Monte Carlo Simulations. It is shown that the structure of the steady state presents inhomogeneous fluctuations in the form of domains of identical particles. The various domains compete with one another via their borders which have self-similar, fractal structure. The fractality is more prominent, (fractal dimensions df < 2), when the parameter values are near the critical point where the Hopf bifurcation occurs. Post-Double Hopf Bifurcation Dynamics and Adaptive Synchronization of a Hyperchaotic System

In this paper a four-dimensional hyperchaotic system with only one equilibrium is considered and its double Hopf bifurcations are investigated. The general post-bifurcation and stability analysis are carried out using the normal form of the system obtained via the method of multiple scales. The dynamics of the orbits predicted through the normal form comprises possible regimes of periodic solutions, two-period tori, and three-period tori in parameter space. Moreover, we show how the hyperchaotic synchronization of this system can be realized via an adaptive control scheme. Numerical simulations are included to show the effectiveness of the designed control.
