The Helium Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB) breeder blanket is being developed as part of the European Fusion Programme. Part of the programme is to investigate blanket designs relevant for future demonstration fusion power plants. This paper presents neutronics analyses of the HCPB with an alternative neutron multiplier, Be12Ti which is incorporated into the design, replacing the current Be multiplier. A parameter study was performed for a range of geometries to identify the optimal heights of the lithium ceramic and neutron multiplier pebble beds. This paper presents a framework for spectrum cartography based on the use of adaptive Gaussian radial basis functions (RBF) centered around a specific number of centroid locations, which are determined, jointly with the other RBF parameters, by the available measurement values at given sensor locations in a specific geographical area. The spectrum map is constructed non-parametrically as no prior knowledge about the transmitters is assumed. When adapted to a particular scenery our senses may fool us: colors are misinterpreted, certain spatial patterns seem to fade out, and static objects appear to move in reverse. A mere empirical description of the mechanisms tuned to color, texture, and motion may tell us where these visual illusions come from. However, such empirical models of gain control do not explain why these mechanisms work in this apparently dysfunctional manner. Zenith angle distributions at Super-Kamiokande and SNO and the solution of the solar neutrino problem

We have performed a detailed study of the zenith angle dependence of the regeneration factor and distributions of events at SNO and SK for different solutions of the solar neutrino problem. In particular, we discuss oscillatory behaviour and the synchronization effect in the distribution for the LMA solution, the parametric peak for the LOW solution, etc.. Physical interpretation of the effects is given. We suggest a new binning of events which emphasizes distinctive features of zenith angle distributions for the different solutions. A correction method for the analysis of continuous linear one-dimensional systems under moving loads

A new correction procedure for dynamic analysis of linear, proportionally damped, continuous systems under traveling concentrated loads is proposed; both cases of non-parametric (moving forces) and parametric (moving mass) loads are considered. Improvement in the evaluation of the dynamic response is obtained by separating the contribution of the low-frequency (LF) modes from that of the high-frequency (HF) modes. Set Membership (SM) W, identification of mixed parametric and nonparametric models is investigated, aimed to estimate a low order approximating model and an identification error, giving a measure of the unmodeled dynamics in a form well suited for H, control methodologies. This paper proposes an observer-based robust guaranteed cost control method for thrust-limited rendezvous in near-circular orbits. Treating the noncircularity of the target orbit as a parametric uncertainty, a linearized motion model derived from the two-body problem is adopted as the controlled plant. Based on this model, a robust guaranteed cost observer-controller is synthesized with a less conservative saturation control law, and sufficient condition for the existence of this observer-based rendezvous controller is derived. Finally, an illustrative example with immeasurable velocity states is presented to demonstrate the advantages and effectiveness of the control scheme.

Data description for continuous parameters is sometimes only based on means and standard deviations of measurement series, graphical representation only concentrates on corresponding "MSE plots", which provide means and standard deviations or even only mean squared errors. However, this strategy is only correct for normally distributed data. Outliers may seriously bias mean and standard deviations and may therefore lead to wrong clinical conclusions. The present paper suggests the use of medians and quartiles, which - just like their graphical pendant, the nonparametric "box whisker plot" - can be applied much more flexibly.
