A statistical study of the quality of surface water intended for human consumption near Valencia (Spain)

2007

Water quality in the European Union is subject to legislation through directives that are applicable in all Member States. The directives specify a set of physical and chemical parameters that should be regularly controlled using a network of sampling points, with sampling based on the intended use of the water. This paper presents the results of a statistical comparison of the quality of water intended for human consumption at two different locations (the Canal de Benagéber and the Canal Júcar-Turia) near the town of Valencia (Spain). These are currently the only canals that could supply Valencia and other nearby towns with drinking water. The parameters considered in this paper are the on…

Empirical Estimation of Accumulation-Induced Change in Gill Net Catchability: Mind the Observation Errors

2015

We analyzed cumulative catches for 24 h gill net exposures divided into 4*6 h, 2*12 h and 1*24 h soak time treatments to estimate the reduction in its catchability due to accumulation of fish. The effects of loss of catch during net lifting, disturbance effect and fouling were eliminated as far as possible to reveal the true effect of accumulation. First we applied simple nonparametric and parametric tests in comparison of treatments. As expected, considerable reduction in catchability took place along with the increase in soak time, indicated by significantly lower total 24 h catches from longer soaks in comparison with shorter ones. The reduction was more pronounced for roach than for per…

Parametric nonlinear singular Dirichlet problems

2019

Abstract We consider a nonlinear parametric Dirichlet problem driven by the p -Laplacian and a reaction which exhibits the competing effects of a singular term and of a resonant perturbation. Using variational methods together with suitable truncation and comparison techniques, we prove a bifurcation-type theorem describing the dependence on the parameter of the set of positive solutions.

Active locking and entanglement in type II optical parametric oscillators

2018

Type II optical parametric oscillators are amongst the highest-quality sources of quantum-correlated light. In particular, when pumped above threshold, such devices generate a pair of bright orthogonally-polarized beams with strong continuous-variable entanglement. However, these sources are of limited practical use, because the entangled beams emerge with different frequencies and a diffusing phase-difference. It has been proven that the use of an internal wave-plate coupling the modes with orthogonal polarization is capable of locking the frequencies of the emerging beams to half the pump frequency, as well as reducing the phase-difference diffusion, at the expense of reducing the entangl…

Parameterization-based tracking for the P2 experiment

2017

The P2 experiment in Mainz aims to determine the weak mixing angle θW at low momentum transfer by measuring the parity-violating asymmetry of elastic electronproton scattering. In order to achieve the intended precision of Δ(sin2 θW )/sin2 θW = 0:13% within the planned 10 000 hours of running the experiment has to operate at the rate of 1011 detected electrons per second. Although it is not required to measure the kinematic parameters of each individual electron, every attempt is made to achieve the highest possible throughput in the track reconstruction chain. In the present work a parameterization-based track reconstruction method is described. It is a variation of track following, where t…

A nonlinear eigenvalue problem for the periodic scalar p-Laplacian

2014

We study a parametric nonlinear periodic problem driven by the scalar $p$-Laplacian. We show that if $\hat \lambda_1 >0$ is the first eigenvalue of the periodic scalar $p$-Laplacian and $\lambda> \hat \lambda_1$, then the problem has at least three nontrivial solutions one positive, one negative and the third nodal. Our approach is variational together with suitable truncation, perturbation and comparison techniques.

Dipole soliton solution for the homogeneous high-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation with cubic–quintic–septic non-Kerr terms

2015

Abstract We consider a high-order nonlinear Schrodinger equation with third- and fourth-order dispersions, cubic–quintic–septic nonlinearities, self-steepening, and instantaneous Raman response. This equation models describes ultra-short optical pulse propagation in highly-nonlinear media. The ansatz solution of Choudhuri and Porsezian (in Ref. [16]) is adapted to investigate solutions composed of the product of bright and dark solitary waves. Parametric conditions for the existence of the derived soliton solutions are given and their stabilities are numerically discussed. These exact solutions provide insight into balance mechanisms between several high-order nonlinearities of different na…

Phase-bistable Kerr cavity solitons and patterns

2013

We study pattern formation in a passive nonlinear optical cavity on the basis of the classic Lugiato-Lefever model with a periodically modulated injection. When the injection amplitude sign alternates, e.g., following a sinusoidal modulation in time or in space, a phase-bistable response emerges, which is at the root of the spatial pattern formation in the system. An asymptotic description is given in terms of a damped nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with parametric amplification, which allows gaining insight into the basic spatiotemporal dynamics of the system. One- and two-dimensional phase-bistable spatial patterns, such as bright and dark-ring cavity solitons and labyrinths, are demons…

Inelastic scattering and interactions of three-wave parametric solitons.

2006

We study the interactions of velocity-locked three-wave parametric solitons in a medium with quadratic nonlinearity and dispersion. We reveal that the inelastic scattering between three-wave solitons and linear waves may be described in terms of analytical solutions with dynamically varying group velocity, or boomerons. Moreover, we demonstrate the elastic nature of three-wave soliton-soliton collisions and interactions.

2006

Considering the parametric generation process in a quadratic nonlinear crystal, we report the experimental observation of optical waves characterized by a X-shaped spatiotemporal coherence, i.e. a coherence skewed along spatiotemporal trajectories.
