Influence of Different DXA Acquisition Modes on Monitoring the Changes in Bone Mineral Density After Hip Resurfacing Arthroplasty
2011
Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is a technique enabling the measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) around prostheses after hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA). In this study, we evaluated the consistency of different DXA acquisition modes with 33 patients who had undergone HRA. Patients were scanned with DXA immediately after surgery and at 3-, 6-, and 12-mo time points. All the patients were scanned with dual femur and orthopedic hip acquisition modes and analyzed using 10-region ROI model. With both acquisition modes, a statistically significant decrease (p0.05, Wilcoxon's test) in BMD at 3mo was revealed in 3 ROIs, located to upper and lateral upper femur. Both acquisition modes…
Effect of sport-tinted contact lenses for contrast enhancement on retinal straylight measurements
2008
PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of two tinted contact lenses (CL) designed for outdoor sports activity on the psychometric determination of retinal straylight using the compensation comparison method. METHODS: Thirteen emmetropic subjects were randomly fitted with two different tinted Nike Maxsight (Bausch & Lomb, Rochester, NY, USA) CL in one eye, while the contralateral eye was fitted with a clear lens made of the same material (Optima 38, Bausch & Lomb). Three valid straylight measurements were taken on each eye before and a few minutes after lens insertion, when lens stabilization had occurred. RESULTS: The subjects' mean straylight values were 0.90 +/- 0.09 at baseline and 0.95 +/- …
Sea Surface Temperature Effects on the Mediterranean Marine Ecosystem: a Semiparametric Model Approach
2021
Ocean warming is a worldwide phenomenon. The mean temperature of the catch (MTC) is becoming one of the leading indicators to assess the impact of sea surface temperature on fish communities. In this study, we apply a semiparametric regression approach to the MTC of the catches from MEDITS bottom trawl program in the Strait of Sicily (Central Mediterranean Sea) for the period 1995 to 2018 to evaluate the effects of climate change on continental shelf fish community. All covariates included in the model have a significant impact on the MTC level. Notably, the sea surface temperature (SST) effect on the MTC depends on depth, being positive near the surface and negative at the bottom.
Assessing the Impact of Temporary Retail Price Discounts Intervals Using SVM Semiparametric Regression
2009
Although the marketing literature has found that temporary retail price discounts cause a significant sales increase, little is known about the specific characteristics of deals that influence the magnitude of the sales spike. In this paper, we analyse the impact of the length of temporary retail price discounts periods on the sales increase using scanner-store daily-sales data for two frequently purchased product categories: ground coffee (a storable category) and yogurt (a perishable category).Wedevelop a robust semiparametric regression model based on support vector statistical theory with several previously proposed predictors along with a daily time description. This model also makes i…
Evaluating temporary retail price discounts using semiparametric regression
2009
PurposeTo analyze the impact of temporary retail price discount on a consumer goods product category using semiparametric regression and considering different promotional price discount characteristics as well as brand characteristics.Design/methodology/approachA semiparametric regression model using Support Vector Machines, which aim to evaluate retailers' decisions about temporary price discounts, has been developed. The model is derived from the analysis of historical sales data, which provide precise evaluation of previous temporary price discounts periods. The model is also consistent with ample empirical evidence showing that historical retail sales data can be used to evaluate the im…

Using Daily Store-level Data to Understand Price Promotion Effects in a Semiparametric Regression Model
2009
Though it has been widely reported in the marketing literature that temporary price discounts generate substantial short-term sales increase, the shape of the deal effect curve constitutes a key research topic, for which there are still limited empirical results. To address this issue, a semiparametric regression approach is used to model the complex nature of this phenomenon. Our model is developed at the brand level using daily store-level scanner-data, which allows the study of several nonreported promotional effects, such as the influence of the day of the week both in promotional and nonpromotional periods. The results show that the weekend is the most effective in increasing promotion…
Statistical Shape and Probability Prior Model for Automatic Prostate Segmentation
2011
International audience; Accurate prostate segmentation in Trans Rectal Ultra Sound (TRUS) images is an important step in different clinical applications. However, the development of computer aided automatic prostate segmentation in TRUS images is a challenging task due to low contrast, heterogeneous intensity distribution inside the prostate region, imaging artifacts like shadow, and speckle. Significant variations in prostate shape, size and contrast between the datasets pose further challenges to achieve an accurate segmentation. In this paper we propose to use graph cuts in a Bayesian framework for automatic initialization and propagate multiple mean parametric models derived from princi…
Electrophysiological Correlates of Change Detection during Delayed Matching Task: A Comparison of Different References
2017
Detecting the changed information between memory representation and incoming sensory inputs is a fundamental cognitive ability. By offering the promise of excellent temporal resolution, event-related potential (ERP) technique has served as a primary tool for studying this process with reference of the linked mastoid (LM). However, given that LM may distort the ERP signals, it is still undetermined whether LM is the best reference choice. The goal of the current study was to systematically compare LM, reference electrode standardization technique (REST) and average reference (AR) for assessing the ERP correlates of change detection during a delayed matching task. Colored shapes were adopted …
Social Network-Based Content Delivery in Device-to-Device Underlay Cellular Networks Using Matching Theory
2017
With the popularity of social network-based services, the unprecedented growth of mobile date traffic has brought a heavy burden on the traditional cellular networks. Device-to-device (D2D) communication, as a promising solution to overcome wireless spectrum crisis, can enable fast content delivery based on user activities in social networks. In this paper, we address the content delivery problem related to optimization of peer discovery and resource allocation by combining both the social and physical layer information in D2D underlay networks. The social relationship, which is modeled as the probability of selecting similar contents and estimated by using the Bayesian nonparametric models…
