Three Patterns of Oscillatory Activity Differentially Synchronize Developing Neocortical Networks In Vivo
2009
Coordinated patterns of electrical activity are important for the early development of sensory systems. The spatiotemporal dynamics of these early activity patterns and the role of the peripheral sensory input for their generation are essentially unknown. We performed extracellular multielectrode recordings in the somatosensory cortex of postnatal day 0 to 7 rats in vivo and observed three distinct patterns of synchronized oscillatory activity. (1) Spontaneous and periphery-driven spindle bursts of 1-2 s in duration and approximately 10 Hz in frequency occurred approximately every 10 s. (2) Spontaneous and sensory-driven gamma oscillations of 150-300 ms duration and 30-40 Hz in frequency oc…
Parametric nonlinear singular Dirichlet problems
2019
Abstract We consider a nonlinear parametric Dirichlet problem driven by the p -Laplacian and a reaction which exhibits the competing effects of a singular term and of a resonant perturbation. Using variational methods together with suitable truncation and comparison techniques, we prove a bifurcation-type theorem describing the dependence on the parameter of the set of positive solutions.
Steady states and nonlinear buckling of cable-suspended beam systems
2018
This paper deals with the equilibria of an elastically-coupled cable-suspended beam system, where the beam is assumed to be extensible and subject to a compressive axial load. When no vertical load is applied, necessary and sufficient conditions in order to have nontrivial solutions are established, and their explicit closed-form expressions are found. In particular, the stationary solutions are shown to exhibit at most two non-vanishing Fourier modes and the critical values of the axial-load parameter which produce their pitchfork bifurcation (buckling) are established. Depending on two dimensionless parameters, the complete set of resonant modes is devised. As expected, breakdown of the p…
Active locking and entanglement in type II optical parametric oscillators
2018
Type II optical parametric oscillators are amongst the highest-quality sources of quantum-correlated light. In particular, when pumped above threshold, such devices generate a pair of bright orthogonally-polarized beams with strong continuous-variable entanglement. However, these sources are of limited practical use, because the entangled beams emerge with different frequencies and a diffusing phase-difference. It has been proven that the use of an internal wave-plate coupling the modes with orthogonal polarization is capable of locking the frequencies of the emerging beams to half the pump frequency, as well as reducing the phase-difference diffusion, at the expense of reducing the entangl…
Synchronization of optical photons for quantum information processing
2015
We observe the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference via homodyne tomography on two photons extracted from two quantum memories.
Comprehensive formulation of the temperature dependent dispersion of optical materials; illustration with the case of temperature tuning of a mid-IR …
2009
International audience; The temperature dependence of refractive indices of optical materials is characterized in this work by what we call their normalized thermo-optic coefficients. These ones are determined experimentally through interferometric measurements of thermal expansion, and changes in optical thickness at a few laser wavelengths as function of temperature. A suitable vectorial formalism applied to these data allows predicting the thermal evolution of the refractive index all over the useful range of transparency. The validity and reliability of our methodology is demonstrated through temperature tuning of a mid-IR HgGa2S4 OPO, pumped at 1.0642 μm by a Nd:YAG laser. Measured the…
Acoustic transmitters for underwater neutrino telescopes.
2012
In this paper acoustic transmitters that were developed for use in underwater neutrino telescopes are presented. Firstly, an acoustic transceiver has been developed as part of the acoustic positioning system of neutrino telescopes. These infrastructures are not completely rigid and require a positioning system in order to monitor the position of the optical sensors which move due to sea currents. To guarantee a reliable and versatile system, the transceiver has the requirements of reduced cost, low power consumption, high pressure withstanding (up to 500 bars), high intensity for emission, low intrinsic noise, arbitrary signals for emission and the capacity of acquiring and processing recei…
Parameterization-based tracking for the P2 experiment
2017
The P2 experiment in Mainz aims to determine the weak mixing angle θW at low momentum transfer by measuring the parity-violating asymmetry of elastic electronproton scattering. In order to achieve the intended precision of Δ(sin2 θW )/sin2 θW = 0:13% within the planned 10 000 hours of running the experiment has to operate at the rate of 1011 detected electrons per second. Although it is not required to measure the kinematic parameters of each individual electron, every attempt is made to achieve the highest possible throughput in the track reconstruction chain. In the present work a parameterization-based track reconstruction method is described. It is a variation of track following, where t…
Temperature dependence of η/s of strongly interacting matter: Effects of the equation of state and the parametric form of (η/s)(T)
2020
We investigate the temperature dependence of the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio $\ensuremath{\eta}/s$ using a piecewise linear parametrization. To determine the optimal values of the parameters and the associated uncertainties, we perform a global Bayesian model-to-data comparison on $\mathrm{Au}+\mathrm{Au}$ collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{\mathrm{NN}}}=200$ GeV and $\mathrm{Pb}+\mathrm{Pb}$ collisions at 2.76 TeV and 5.02 TeV, using a $2+1\mathrm{D}$ hydrodynamical model with the Eskola-Kajantie-Ruuskanen-Tuominen (EKRT) initial state. We provide three new parametrizations of the equation of state (EoS) based on contemporary lattice results and hadron resonance gas, and use them and t…
Optomechanical oscillations in microbubble resonators: Enhancement, suppression and chaotic behaviour
2019
We report on the experimental and theoretical analysis of parametrical optomechanical oscillations in hollow spherical PhoXonic whispering gallery mode resonators due to radiation pressure. The optically excited acoustic eigenmodes of the PhoXonic cavity oscillate regeneratively leading to parametric oscillation instabilities.
