Laser driven X-ray parametric amplification in neutral gases—a new brilliant light source in the XUV

2011

Abstract In this paper we present the experimental setup and results showing a new type of strong-field parametric amplification of high-order harmonic radiation. With a simple semi-classical model, we can identify the most important experimental parameters, the spectral range and the small signal gain in gases. Using a single stage amplifier, a small signal gain of 8000 has been obtained in argon for the spectral range of 40–50 eV, using 350 fs, 7 mJ pulses at 1.05 μm. An outlook for an experiment employing a double stage gas system will be given.

Stabilizing and controlling domain walls and dark-ring cavity solitons.

2009

We demonstrate two alternative techniques for controlling and stabilizing domain walls (DW) in phase-sensitive, nonlinear optical resonators. The first of them uses input pumps with spatially modulated phase and can be applied also to dark-ring cavity solitons. An optical memory based on the latter is demonstrated. Here the physical mechanism of control relies on the advection caused to any feature by the phase gradients. The second technique uses a plane wave input pump with holes of null intensity across its transverse plane, which are able to capture DWs. Here the physical mechanism of control is of topological nature. When distributed as a regular array, these holes delimit spatial opti…

Bifurcations of phase portraits of a Singular Nonlinear Equation of the Second Class

2014

Abstract The soliton dynamics is studied using the Frenkel Kontorova (FK) model with non-convex interparticle interactions immersed in a parameterized on-site substrate potential. The case of a deformable substrate potential allows theoretical adaptation of the model to various physical situations. Non-convex interactions in lattice systems lead to a number of interesting phenomena that cannot be produced with linear coupling alone. In the continuum limit for such a model, the particles are governed by a Singular Nonlinear Equation of the Second Class. The dynamical behavior of traveling wave solutions is studied by using the theory of bifurcations of dynamical systems. Under different para…

OPCPA using beams shaped by diffractive optical elements

2011

Optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA) is becoming a widely accepted technique for the generation of high energy ultrashort laser pulses. Flat-top spatial profile pump beams can improve the efficiency of OPCPA, however such beams can be energetically costly to generate and are difficult to implement for low pump energy systems. An elegant and efficient solution to the generation of flat-top spatial profiles is the use of a diffractive optical element (DOE), however these devices distort the geometric phase of the pulses, possibly making them unsuitable for phase coherent interactions such as OPCPA.

Squeezed Light Generation via Spatial Symmetry Breaking

2009

The spontaneous spatial symmetry breaking occurring in the transverse section of the light beam emitted by a degenerate optical parametric oscillator is shown to give rise to perfectly squeezed light. Such phenomenon occurs at any operating conditions, unlike conventional squeezing.

Photorefractive amplifier-converter and coherent oscillator with nonexponential gain

2001

For some parametric interactions with identically zero exponential gain for the signal wave the intensity of the idler wave can grow as a second power of the propagation coordinate. Such an amplification is revealed for the parametric mixing of four copropagating waves in BaTiO3; two of them are ordinarily polarized and the two others are extraordinarily polarized. This mixing is used to build up a coherent oscillator. A reasonable qualitative agreement of the experimental results with the calculated data is demonstrated.

Quadratic solitons in 2D nonlinear photonic crystals

2007

We report on the first observation of spatial solitons in a 2D nonlinear photonic crystal. The experiments were performed in an hexagonally poled LiNbO3 waveguide designed for second harmonic generation from ~1.55 micron.

Optomechanical systems close to the conservative limit

2017

In dissipative optomechanical systems, the total damping hits negative values at the parametric instability point. This also corresponds to the phonon lasing threshold, where the mechanical resonator enters in the self-induced oscillations regime. This paper shows that the two mentioned phenomena are delayed from each other when the optomechanical systems operate close to their conservative limit, where the mechanical damping is very small. In fact, the total damping can be negative and very small for a while before the phonon lasing happens. As a result, the linearized theory is extended over the negative damping region where the mechanical displacements remain very small. It follows that …

Wavelength shift of four-wave mixing bands in photonic crystal fibers pumped in the normal dispersion regime

2011

The generation of correlated photon pairs plays a central role in several quantum mechanics applications, such as quantum information, and cryptography [1]. Correlated photon pairs can be generated inside an optical fiber through the parametric process of degenerated four-wave mixing (FWM) [2]. In this paper we report the results of two different experiments where wavelength shift of FWM bands in normal dispersive PCFs is investigated.

Integrated Generation of High-dimensional Entangled Photon States and Their Coherent Control

2017

Exploiting a frequency-domain approach, we demonstrate the generation of high-dimensional entangled quantum states with a Hilbert-space dimensionality larger than 100 from an on-chip nonlinear microcavity, and introduce a coherent control platform using standard telecommunications components.
