Laser driven parametric amplification in the xuv and soft-x-ray spectral range
2011
We present the first experimental realization of a new x-ray laser scheme based on strong-field parametric amplification of high-order harmonic radiation. With a simple semi-classical model, we can identify the most important experimental parameters, the spectral range and the small signal gain in gases. Using a single amplifier stage a small signal gain of 8000 has been obtained in Argon for the spectral range of 40-50 eV, using 350 fs, 7 mJ pulses at 1.05 µm. In Helium, we observed a small signal gain of 280 around 300 eV using 6 fs, 1.5 mJ pulses at 800 nm.
Centroid-based Cluster Analysis of HVSR Data for Seismic Microzonation
2014
Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) datasets acquired for studies of seismic microzoning in various urban centers of Sicilian towns, have been used to test clustering analysis through a nonhierarchical centroid-based algorithm. In this context clustering techniques may be useful to identify areas with similar seismic behaviour through HVSR data. Centroid-based algorithms generally require the number of clusters, k, and the initial centroid coordinates to be specified in advance. This aspect is considered to be one of the biggest drawbacks of these algorithms. The proposed algorithm doesn’t limit the number of k clusters and choose the initial centroids automatically from the data s…
A data analysis approach to evaluate the impact of the capacity utilization on the energy consumption of wastewater treatment plants
2019
Abstract The reduction of energy consumption in Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs) is a challenge for the scientific community and for the public authorities. A source of excessive energy cost is the mismatching between operational and design inflow (i.e. capacity utilization): this issue is very relevant above all in areas with high demographic seasonality. Consequently, it is really important to have operational decision criteria to evaluate the impact of a low capacity utilization on energy consumption. In order to provide the scientific community and the plant managers with an adequate criterion, we propose a user-friendly methodology to identify critical conditions of capacity utiliz…
A comparison of different one-diode models for the representation of I–V characteristic of a PV cell
2014
Predictive performance tools are an important factor in the success of any new technology because they permit demonstration of whether a system will be efficient and economically feasible. A reliable predictive tool should allow the designer to optimise system performance and to maximise the cost effectiveness of a system prior to installation. This article discusses the five main parametric models for photovoltaic (PV) systems available in the literature. The current–voltage characteristics of a photovoltaic module can be reproduced modelling the PV panel as an equivalent electrical circuit made of linear and non-linear components. The parameters describing such components are directly rel…
Effect of a 1-year elastic band resistance exercise program on cardiovascular risk profile in postmenopausal women
2018
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a 1-year progressive resistance training program using elastic bands on cardiovascular profile parameters in sedentary postmenopausal (>12 months’ amenorrhea) women. Methods: This longitudinal prospective experimental study included 38 menopausal women who were randomly divided into two groups: an intervention group (IG, n = 18), who completed a progressive resistance training program with elastic bands over the course of 12 months (six exercises for whole body training, three sets × 10 repetitions), and a control group (CG, n = 20) that did not perform any training. Blood analysis and body composition were determined at bas…
LaDy: Software for assessing local landscape diversity profiles of raster land cover maps using geographic windows
2003
Landscape ecology starts from the assumption that diversity and spatial arrangement of ecosystem mosaics have ecological implications and tries to understand the interactions between diversity and structure of large spatially heterogeneous areas and their ecological functions. These assumptions imply effective use of earth observation techniques and geographic information systems, enabling a global view of the landscape mosaics. In this paper, a software, LaDy (Landscape Diversity Software), for computing Re´nyi’s local landscape diversity profile on raster land cover maps is presented. LaDy is based on the use of Merchant’s adaptive geographic window, which is designed to operate on a neig…
A Sample Selection Model for Unit and Item Nonresponse in Cross-Sectional Surveys
2007
We consider a general sample selection model where unit and item nonresponse simultaneously affect a regression relationship of interest, and both types of nonresponse are potentially correlated. We estimate both parametric and semiparametric specifications of the model. The parametric specification assumes that the errors in the latent regression equations follow a trivariate Gaussian distribution. The semiparametric specification avoids distributional assumptions about the underlying regression errors. In our empirical application, we estimate Engel curves for consumption expenditure using data from the first wave of SHARE (Survey on Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe).
Biologic response of inguinal hernia prosthetics: a comparative study of conventional static meshes versus 3D dynamic implants.
2015
Despite improvements in prosthetics and surgical techniques, the rate of complications following inguinal hernia repair remains high. Among these, discomfort and chronic pain have become a source of increasing concern among surgeons. Poor quality of tissue ingrowth, such as thin scar plates or shrinking scars-typical results with conventional static implants and plugs-may contribute to these adverse events. Recently, a new type of 3D dynamically responsive implant was introduced to the market. This device, designed to be placed fixation-free, seems to induce ingrowth of viable and structured tissue instead of regressive fibrotic scarring. To elucidate the differences in biologic response be…
Adaptive backstepping based consensus tracking of uncertain nonlinear systems with event-triggered communication
2021
Abstract This paper investigates the consensus tracking problem for a class of uncertain high-order nonlinear systems with parametric uncertainties and event-triggered communication. Under a directed communication condition, a totally distributed adaptive backstepping based control scheme is presented. Specifically, a decentralized triggering condition is adopted in this paper such that continuous monitoring of neighboring states, as required in some existing results, can be avoided. Besides, to handle the non-differentiability problem of virtual controllers, which arises from the utilization of neighboring states collected only at the triggering instants, the virtual controllers in each re…
