Solid state NMR to characterize paper and parchment samples from a Sixteenth century book

2013

In this chapter, a solid state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (ss-NMR) Study of sixteenth century book is reported. Cross polarization Magic Angle Spinning Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (13C(1H) CP MAS NMR) spectra of paper samples collected from the book, allowed us to obtain information on its state of conservation. The physico-chemical characterization of two parchment samples collected from the cover book was performed trough the evaluation of the changes in line width and intensity of signals in the spectra.

Palaeogenetics and cultural heritage. Species determination and STR-genotyping from ancient DNA in art and artefacts

2000

Abstract In recent years, a few papers have addressed the palaeogenetic analysis of cultural, historical and archaeological artefacts. We provide an overview of the individual published articles and then describe the results we had in the framework of a palaeogenetic research project involving various historical and prehistoric finds from museums, archaeological excavations, and libraries. We show that ancient DNA can be isolated from most of the various biomaterials (leather, parchment, glue, binding media, crusted organic plant remains in containers). Short pieces of degraded DNA are used, on the one hand, to determine the organic remnant’s genus/species of origin, and on the other hand, …

Salmos 32 : 11-36:7 y 78:25-81:2: nuevos fragmentos de la Biblia castellana romanceada del monasterio de Santa María de la Sisla

2018

The study of archival collections from medieval religious orders has made it possible to locate a second fragment of a medieval Spanish Bible, from the Hieronymian monastery of Santa Maria de la Sisla (Toledo). It is a bifolia from the book of Psalms that belonged to the same codex as the recently identified Ezekiel fragment (=S1). In this article the finding is reported, the liber tradens is described, specifying its meaning and value to ensure monastery rents, the fragments that it transmits are given: part of a bifolia in parchment of the s. XIII and biblical bifolia that serves as cover, focusing especially on the description of this second fragment (= S2). Next, the relationships betwe…

Physicochemical Characterization Of Ancient Paper And Parchment With Solid State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

2014

Historical paper and parchment are widely investigated in order to comprehend mechanisms of degradation and to plan proper conservation interventions. NMR spectroscopy is a powerful tool that allows to the changes occurring during the degradation process and to get information on the state of conservation. In this work a Cross Polarization Magic Angle Spinning Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (13C{1H} CP MAS NMR) study of a 16th century book is reported. The physicochemical characterization of paper samples collected from the book was performed through the evaluation of intensity and the changes in line width of signals in the spectra. 13C{1H} CP MAS NMR spectra of paper samples collected from th…
