Pro gradu -tutkielma käsittelee kiistanalaisten poliittisten käsitteiden käyttöä Irlannin ja Iso-Britannian parlamenttiunionista käydyssä julkisessa keskustelussa 1798 – 1800. Keskustelu autonomisen Irlannin ja Iso-Britannian kuningaskuntien yhdistymisestä alkoi Irlantia kesällä 1798 ravisuttaneen kapinan seurauksena. Parlamenttiunionista käydyn sanasodan aikana poliittiset keskustelijat perustelivat omia kantojaan usein vetoamalla poliittisiin periaatteisiin. Through their discursive actions, parliamentarians have an impact on the public perception of societal issues. Drawing on the Discourse-Historical Approach of Critical Discourse Studies this paper strives to illuminate how persons, objects, or abstract things are discursively constructed as victims. The debate speeches relate to two cases of terrorism: The National Socialist Underground (NSU) and the ISIS attack at Breitscheidplatz in Berlin. After first identifying the types of victims in the data, the study then conducts a detailed analysis of the discursive resources that are used in the construction process. The article emphasizes the significance of EU studies for political thought and concepts. It deals with the seemingly technical topic of the membership of cabinet ministers in parliament. This practice arose in eighteenth-century Westminster and has been discussed since the mid-nineteenth century, Walter Bagehot's and Max Weber's writings being landmarks. When the European Parliamentary Assembly in 1960 interpreted the Treaty of Rome, it took the view, by a narrow margin, that membership of the Parliament was incompatible with membership of the Commission. The debate on the compatibility of dual membership could have been a way to promote the parliamentarization of the EU. peerReviewed

Conceptual history analyses diachronic change and synchronic contestability of such key terms.
