Research on regular priories, monastic and canonic in the formes dioceses of Chalon and Mâcon from the 10th to the 14th centuries

The study presented here is the result from an inventory of the priories in the former dioceses of Chalon and Macon, closely dependent on the metropolis of Lyon .This territory corresponds to the main roads of the former realm of Burgundy. Among the 183 priories which have been retained, only 69 depended on Cluny, all the others belonged to the other monastic or canonic families of St Augustine’s order. Owing to the collections more andmore profitable, to the foundations of perpetual masses, particularly numerous in the 1480-1510 period, the rouennais churchwardens have substantial financial resources that they use in a vast programme of reconstruction of the places of worship, some purchases of somptuous vestments and some interest loans. Playing so a not insignificant part in the economy of the town, they are recruited from amogn the greatest families, who consolidate their prestige and their influence by a luxurious piety for the profit of their parish.
