Effects of ocean acidification on embryonic respiration and development of a temperate wrasse living along a natural CO2 gradient

Volcanic CO2 seeps provide opportunities to investigate the effects of ocean acidification on organisms in the wild. To understand the influence of increasing CO2 concentrations on the metabolic rate (oxygen consumption) and the development of ocellated wrasse early life stages, we ran two field experiments, collecting embryos from nesting sites with different partial pressures of CO2 [pCO2; ambient (400 µatm) and high (800-1000 µatm)] and reciprocally transplanting embryos from ambient- to high-CO2 sites for 30 h. Distribution of oxygen partial pressure in a two-dimensional tissue supplied by capillary meshes and concurrent and countercurrent systems

Abstract For the calculations of oxygen partial pressure in a two-dimensional tissue model supplied by a capillary network (inhomogeneously perfused tissue), two differential equations are given that describe the process in the tissue and capillaries. The differential equations are coupled by the boundary conditions. Results obtained by using the method of successive displacements are given for the two-dimensional problem. This method exhibits a satisfactory convergence. The accuracy of the results is about ±5% based on the initial concentration. Morphology transitions (nanorods–nanowalls and nanorods–nanotubes-layer) were induced in the growth of ZnO nanostructures by metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) on c-sapphire, using helium as carrier gas, and dimethylzinc–triethylamine and nitrous oxide as zinc and oxygen sources, respectively. AES and CEMS analysis of the formation of layers on Si steel under thermal treatment in a flux of H2/water vapour

The near surface diffusion and reaction processes in iron-silicon steel (3.1 wt.%Si) during 10 min decarburization in water vapour/hydrogen have been studied. The decarburization temperature has been varied between 506 and 714°C for the fixed partial pressure ratio pH2O/pH2=0.017. An outer layer of SiO2 forms on the surface with its thickness increasing with temperature. From 600°C upwards, the decarburization process is hindered and a cementite layer is formed below the SiO2 layer. The formation of fayalite at the surface has been studied at a fixed decarburization temperature with pH2O/pH2 ranging from 0.017 to 0.49. Modeling of PAH elimination by adiabatic steam stripping and intraparticle desorption

The decontamination process of solids loaded with PAH in a pilot plant is modeled. This process is separated into two main stages: fast steam stripping at the entrance of the separation tube and the subsequent slow desorption of PAH from the interior of the soil particles. The stripping process also occurs in two stages: fast diffusion controlled saturation of the partial pressures followed by the heat transfer controlled evaporation. The phase diagram of PAH/water is constructed using both the microscopic model and empirical relationships for systems with wide miscibility gaps. Abstract The crystal growth of ZnO by vapour transport is classically made with the assistance of additional species that produce a gaseous mixture, the role of which remains often uncertain in the transport and growth process. Interaction of Ni/SiO2 with thiophene.

Abstract The interaction between Ni/SiO 2 (18 wt%) and thiophene was studied by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and in a fixed-bed reactor. The samples were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation and reaction was realized in hydrogen flow at 280–360 °C in the presence of 10–40 mbar of thiophene. It is found that sulfidation of Ni is not complete in TGA experiments and the maximum achievable transformation degree depends not only on the temperature and thiophene pressure, but also on the sample weight and the gas flow rate. Nitrogen plasma pressure influence on the composition of TiNxOy sputtered films

Thin films of TiNxOy were deposited by d.c. magnetron sputtering on glass substrates using an (Ar+,N2) plasma and Ti target. The N2 partial pressure was changed from 2.3 × 10−4 mbar to 4.6 × 10−3 mbar in order to obtain films with increasing nitrogen contents. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to determine the as-deposited composition. The presence of oxygen, which is probably due to contamination from the residual atmosphere in the vacuum chamber, is always detected, both in the surface layers and in the bulk of the films, confirming the formation of TiNxOy.
