Analysis of inhomogeneously filled waveguides using a bi-orthonormal-basis method
2000
A general theoretical formulation to analyze inhomogeneously filled waveguides with lossy dielectrics is presented in this paper. The wave equations for the tranverse-field components are written in terms of a nonself-adjoint linear operator and its adjoint. The eigenvectors of this pair of linear operators define a biorthonormal-basis, allowing for a matrix representation of the wave equations in the basis of an auxiliary waveguide. Thus, the problem of solving a system of differential equations is transformed into a linear matrix eigenvalue problem. This formulation is applied to rectangular waveguides loaded with an arbitrary number of dielectric slabs centered at arbitrary points. The c…
Adsorption of atomic and molecular oxygen on the SrTiO3(001) surfaces: Computer simulations by means of hybrid density functional calculations and ab…
2005
AbstractAb initio calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) have been used to study the energetics, fully relaxed structure, charge redistribution, and electronic density of states of adsorbed atomic and molecular oxygen on defectless unreconstructed SrO- and TiO2-terminated SrTiO3(001) surfaces. Exchange-correlation functional applied within DFT contains a “hybrid” of the non-local Hartree–Fock exchange, DFT exchange, and generalized gradient approximation correlation functionals. The calculations are performed on periodically repeated systems (two-dimensional slabs) large enough for the adsorbed species to be treated as isolated. We find substantial binding energies of up to 1…
Evolution of oral cancer treatment in an andalusian population sample: Rehabilitation with prosthetic obturation and removable partial prosthesis
2017
BACKGROUND Radical surgical resection as a treatment modality for oral cancer often leads to an extensive deficit in both the maxillary and mandibular levels, where the use of a palatal obturator prosthesis (POP) or removable partial denture (RPP). The aim of this study was to evaluate the treatment with POP and RPP in patients treated for oral cancer in the Unit of Prosthetic Rehabilitation of the University Hospital Virgen del Rocio in a period of 20 years. MATERIAL AND METHODS Retrospective descriptive study during the years 1991 and 2011 analyzing oral cancer type, characteristics, treatment and follow-up. The sample consisted of patients whose tumor had previously been removed and who …
A parallel radix-4 block cyclic reduction algorithm
2013
SUMMARY A conventional block cyclic reduction algorithm operates by halving the size of the linear system at each reduction step, that is, the algorithm is a radix-2 method. An algorithm analogous to the block cyclic reduction known as the radix-q partial solution variant of the cyclic reduction (PSCR) method allows the use of higher radix numbers and is thus more suitable for parallel architectures as it requires fever reduction steps. This paper presents an alternative and more intuitive way of deriving a radix-4 block cyclic reduction method for systems with a coefficient matrix of the form tridiag{ − I,D, − I}. This is performed by modifying an existing radix-2 block cyclic reduction me…
Existence and Relaxation Results for Second Order Multivalued Systems
2021
AbstractWe consider nonlinear systems driven by a general nonhomogeneous differential operator with various types of boundary conditions and with a reaction in which we have the combined effects of a maximal monotone term $A(x)$ A ( x ) and of a multivalued perturbation $F(t,x,y)$ F ( t , x , y ) which can be convex or nonconvex valued. We consider the cases where $D(A)\neq \mathbb{R}^{N}$ D ( A ) ≠ R N and $D(A)= \mathbb{R}^{N}$ D ( A ) = R N and prove existence and relaxation theorems. Applications to differential variational inequalities and control systems are discussed.
Model of ageing inception and growth from microvoids in polyethylene-based materials under AC voltage
2008
Several degradation mechanisms may affect polymeric insulation system reliability. Some authors postulate that, even in a perfect dielectric, nanoscale cavities can enlarge due to various mechanisms (from mechanical fatigue to lowering of the degradation reaction energy barrier) up to a point where highly energetic phenomena, which bring about breakdown, can be incepted. Other authors are more focused on the inherent limits of manufacturing processes, which leave cavities within the insulation system whose size is large enough to cause electron avalanches, thus a measurable partial discharge (PD) activity, from the time the system is put in service or as a function of external factors (e.g.…
Catalytic performance of CoAlZn and NiAlZn mixed oxides in hydrogen production by bio-ethanol partial oxidation
2013
CoAlZn and NiAlZn mixed oxides were prepared by sol-gel method and tested in partial oxidation of bio-ethanol (POE). At lower temperatures, CoAlZn showed higher ethanol conversion and higher selectivity to H2 and CO than NiAlZn. At higher temperatures, ethanol conversion on both catalysts reached 100%, while selectivity (S) to H2 and CO became higher on NiAlZn. At 750 C, NiAlZn showed S(H2) of 95%, S(CO) of 90%, while for CoAlZn these values were 90% and 83% respectively. Both catalysts were resistant to coking, but the amount of carbon deposits was still lower on NiAlZn. During 50 h on-stream, ethanol conversion and selectivity to H2 and CO on NiAlZn remained unchanged demonstrating stable…

Capnometry, i.e. measurement of CO2 concentration (cCO2, vol%) and calculation of the respective CO2 partial pressure (pCO2, mmHg), is simple to apply, but the user must understand its principles of operation in order to appreciate its power and its limitations. However, sidestream capnometers use to dry the humidified respired gas (37 degrees C, pH2O 47 mmHg) for methodological reasons, thus increasing pCO2 by ca. 6% which, in turn, requires correction. With infrared spectroscopy, overestimation of pCO2 in presence of N2O and underreporting of pCO2 in presence of O2 also require to be corrected. These require either knowledge of the respective gas concentrations (mainstream analyzers) or a…
Determination of the energetic value of fruit and milk-based beverages through partial-least-squares attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform i…
2005
Abstract The estimation of important nutritional parameters, such as carbohydrates content and energetic value (calories) in commercially available fruit juice and flavour milk shakes has been made by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) using a partial-least-square (PLS) calibration approach. A highly heterogeneous population of 65 samples obtained from the Spanish market, covering fruit juices, flavour milk shakes and milk-added fruit juices was used. The spectral range and the size of the calibration set for building the PLS model have been evaluated. Considering a calibration set comprised of 27 samples, selected via hierarchical cluster analys…
