Stochastic resonance and noise delayed extinction in a model of two competing species

We study the role of the noise in the dynamics of two competing species. We consider generalized Lotka-Volterra equations in the presence of a multiplicative noise, which models the interaction between the species and the environment. The interaction parameter between the species is a random process which obeys a stochastic differential equation with a generalized bistable potential in the presence of a periodic driving term, which accounts for the environment temperature variation. We find noise-induced periodic oscillations of the species concentrations and stochastic resonance phenomenon. Reassessing Accuracy Rates of Median Decisions

We show how Bruno de Finetti''s fundamental theorem of prevision has computable applications in statistical problems that involve only partial information. Specifically, we assess accuracy rates for median decision procedures used in the radiological diagnosis of asbestosis. Conditional exchangeability of individual radiologists'' diagnoses is recognized as more appropriate than independence which is commonly presumed. The FTP yields coherent bounds on probabilities of interest when available information is insufficient to determine a complete distribution. Abstract For the calculations of oxygen partial pressure in a two-dimensional tissue model supplied by a capillary network (inhomogeneously perfused tissue), two differential equations are given that describe the process in the tissue and capillaries. The differential equations are coupled by the boundary conditions. Results obtained by using the method of successive displacements are given for the two-dimensional problem. This method exhibits a satisfactory convergence. The accuracy of the results is about ±5% based on the initial concentration. Quantum graphs with mixed dynamics: the transport/diffusion case

We introduce a class of partial differential equations on metric graphs associated with mixed evolution: on some edges we consider diffusion processes, on other ones transport phenomena. This yields a system of equations with possibly nonlocal couplings at the boundary. We provide sufficient conditions for these to be governed by a contractive semigroup on a Hilbert space naturally associated with the system. We show that our setting is also adequate to discuss specific systems of diffusion equations with boundary delays.
Exploring regression structure with graphics

We investigate the extent to which it may be possible to carry out a regression analysis using graphics alone, an idea that we refer to asgraphical regression. The limitations of this idea are explored. It is shown that graphical regression is theoretically possible with essentially no constraints on the conditional distribution of the response given the predictors, but with some conditions on marginal distribution of the predictors. Dimension reduction subspaces and added variable plots play a central role in the development. The possibility of useful methodology is explored through two examples.

We analyze the non-relativistic problem of a quantum particle that bounces back and forth between two moving walls. We recast this problem into the equivalent one of a quantum particle in a fixed box whose dynamics is governed by an appropriate time-dependent Schroedinger operator.
A new stochastic representation for the decay from a metastable state

Abstract We show that a stochastic process on a complex plane can simulate decay from a metastable state. The simplest application of the method to a model in which the approach to equilibrium occurs through transitions over a potential barrier is discussed. The results are compared with direct numerical simulations of the stochastic differential equations describing system's evolution. We have found that the new method is much more efficient from computational point of view than the direct simulations.
Superexchange-mediated electronic energy transfer in a model dyad

On the basis of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations coupled to the polarizable continuum model (PCM) and single molecule spectroscopic studies, we provide a detailed investigation of excitation energy transfer within a model bi-chromophoric system where a perylene monoimide (PMI) donor is bridged to a terrylene diimide (TDI) acceptor through a ladder-type pentaphenylene (pPh) spacer. We find that the electronic excitation on the PMI donor significantly extends over the bridge giving rise to a partial charge transfer character and inducing a approximately 3-fold increase in the electronic interaction between the chromophores, which explains the failure of the Först…
