Inverse problems and invisibility cloaking for FEM models and resistor networks

2013

In this paper we consider inverse problems for resistor networks and for models obtained via the finite element method (FEM) for the conductivity equation. These correspond to discrete versions of the inverse conductivity problem of Calderón. We characterize FEM models corresponding to a given triangulation of the domain that are equivalent to certain resistor networks, and apply the results to study nonuniqueness of the discrete inverse problem. It turns out that the degree of nonuniqueness for the discrete problem is larger than the one for the partial differential equation. We also study invisibility cloaking for FEM models, and show how an arbitrary body can be surrounded with a layer …

Cutting efficency of a new diamond bur for tooth preparation

2003

Objectives: The aim of this study is to compare the cutting efficiency of a recently introduced diamond bur (314.S-6878.016, Komet Brasseler) for tooth preparation with its conventional variant (314.6878.016). Both burs have the same diameter, profile and diamond grains (160µm), but the 6878 have a polygonal section at the cutting portion level; this is claimed to have a percussion effect which can improve the hard tissue removal. Materials and methods: four burs from each type have been selected. Tablets made of human tooth fragments embedded in epoxy resin (4 to 1 w/w ratio) were used as test specimens. Their abrasion resistance is about 14% higher than that of the dentin. The burs were m…

Chronic neural probe for simultaneous recording of single-unit, multi-unit, and local field potential activity from multiple brain sites

2017

Drug resistant focal epilepsy can be treated by resecting the epileptic focus requiring a precise focus localisation using stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) probes. As commercial SEEG probes offer only a limited spatial resolution, probes of higher channel count and design freedom enabling the incorporation of macro and microelectrodes would help increasing spatial resolution and thus open new perspectives for investigating mechanisms underlying focal epilepsy and its treatment. This work describes a new fabrication process for SEEG probes with materials and dimensions similar to clinical probes enabling recording single neuron activity at high spatial resolution.Polyimide is used as a bi…

Analysis of Caffeine, Sweeteners, and Other Additives in Beverages by Vibrational Spectroscopy

2001

This chapter presents a review of the scientific literature on the use of vibrational spectroscopy, near-infrared (NIR), mid-infrared (mid-IR), and Raman, for the analysis of caffeine, sweeteners, and other additives in beverages and related products. Direct analysis procedures of coffee and tea, for both classification according to precedence or variety and quantitative determination of caffeine, are available. For beverage analysis, caffeine has been determined by direct attenuated total reflection (ATR) measurement or by transmission spectroscopy in the mid-IR region after extraction with chloroform. Different strategies have been employed for the analysis of sweeteners in beverages and …

Productive and vegetative responses of 'Gala' and 'Fuji' apple trees under controlled irrigation strategies

2008

We investigated the productive and vegetative responses of ‘Gala’ and 'Fuji' apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) trees to deficit irrigation and partial rootzone drying under the dry climate of central Sicily. Soil water tension (SWT), stomatal conductance, yield, fruit quality, fruit growth, and shoot extension of conventionally irrigated trees (CI), where drip emitters on both sides of each tree were left open, were compared to that of partial rootzone drying (PRD) trees, where only one side of the rootzone was irrigated for the entire season (receiving 50% of the CI irrigation water), and to that of deficit irrigated (DI) trees, where drip emitters on both sides of the rootzone were deliverin…

Bayesian estimation of partial population continuity using ancient DNA and spatially explicit simulations.

2017

Abstract The retrieval of ancient DNA from osteological material provides direct evidence of human genetic diversity in the past. Ancient DNA samples are often used to investigate whether there was population continuity in the settlement history of an area. Methods based on the serial coalescent algorithm have been developed to test whether the population continuity hypothesis can be statistically rejected by analysing DNA samples from the same region but of different ages. Rejection of this hypothesis is indicative of a large genetic shift, possibly due to immigration occurring between two sampling times. However, this approach is only able to reject a model of full continuity model (a tot…

Heterogeneity of volatile sources along the Halmahera arc, Indonesia

2021

co-auteur étranger; International audience; The parallel Halmahera and Sangihe arcs in eastern Indonesia are sites of active arc-arc collision of considerable interest in developing understanding of the geodynamics and geochemistry of subduction zones. Owing to the comparative remoteness of the region, few ground-based studies of the volcanoes have been undertaken. Here, we report and integrate gas measurements and (isotope) geochemical analyses of lava samples for Dukono, Ibu, Gamkonora, Gamalama, and Makian volcanoes of the Halmahera arc. Summing gas fluxes for all five volcanoes indicates arcscale emission budgets for H 2 O, CO 2 , SO 2 , H 2 S, and H 2 of 96300±27000, 2093±450, 944±400,…

New geochemical and combined zircon U–Pb and Lu–Hf isotopic data of orthogneisses in the northern Altyn Tagh, northern margin of the Tibetan plateau:…

2014

Abstract Dunhuang Block is previously considered to be an eastern part of the Tarim Craton, but now it is proposed to be the western extension of the Alxa Block of the NCC as a result of displacement along the Altyn Tagh fault. The oldest basement rocks of the Dunhuang Block, named Aketashitage Complex, were mainly exposed in the northern Altyn Tagh. Migmatites of the Aketashitage Complex are sodic and subalkaline in composition. Zircon U–Pb dating of the tonalitic and monzogranitic migmatites indicates that these rocks were produced by strong deformation of earlier formed tonalites with innumerous granitic veins. The tonalitic melanosome of the migmatites was generated approximately at 2.7…
