Metamorphism and melting of picritic crust in the early Earth

2014

Abstract Partial melting experiments with models of Archean oceanic crust (MAOC; with 11, 13 and 15 wt.% MgO) are used to investigate the role of metamorphism and melting of primary picritic compositions in the formation of TTG-like melts and continental crust on the early Earth. The approach investigates the possibility that the average early crust composition was comparatively MgO-rich and evolved to lower magnesium content during the secular cooling of the Earth. High-pressure partial melting experiments indicate a transition of melt compositions from aluminous basaltic melts in MAOC 15 to predominantly tonalitic melts in MAOC 11 and higher melting temperatures with increasing magnesium …

MORB-type neon in an enriched mantle beneath Etna, Sicily

1997

Abstract Noble gas elemental and isotopic compositions were determined for five CO 2 –CH 4 samples collected around Etna, Sicily, to investigate the geochemical features of the mantle beneath the volcano. The samples contain mantle-derived noble gases. The measured helium isotopic ratios ( 3 He/ 4 He) vary between 5.9 and 6.4 times atmospheric ratio ( R a =1.4×10 −6 ), which are comparable to the ratios of olivines (6.1–8.2 R a ) in the lavas of the same volcano [1]. Neon in the samples is enriched in both 20 Ne and 21 Ne ( 20 Ne/ 22 Ne 9.95–10.7, 21 Ne/ 22 Ne 0.030–0.037), indicating derivation from the mantle. The δ ( 20 Ne/ 22 Ne)/ δ ( 21 Ne/ 22 Ne) values are identical with that of mid-…

Geodynamic setting of Upper Miocene to Quaternary alkaline basalts from Harrat al ‘Uwayrid (NW Saudi Arabia): Constraints from K Ar dating, chemical …

2019

Highlights • Volcanic activity of Harrat Uwayrid (NW Arabia) lasted from 8.2 to 0.3 Ma. • Alkali olivine basalts are followed by basanites, tephrites and tephriphonolites. • Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic ratios of all volcanic rocks suggest a PREMA source. • Different degrees of partial melting of amphibole-garnet-spinel lherzolite • Lithospheric mantle source rather than asthenosphere or plume-type mantle Abstract The volcanic field of Harrat ar Rahah-’Uwayrid (NW Saudi Arabia) consists of an older plateau basalt sequence that overlies Cambrian sandstone and younger cinder cones with smaller flows that are concentrated in the central part of this field. Petrographic and whole rock geochemical data ind…

Late Cretaceous lithospheric extension in SE China: Constraints from volcanic rocks in Hainan Island

2015

Abstract Petrological, geochemical and in-situ zircon U–Pb dating and Hf-isotope analyses have been carried out on a suite of basalt–andesite–rhyolite volcanic rocks exposed in the Liuluocun area, Hainan Island, SE China. Zircon analyses show that these volcanic rocks crystallized in the Early Cretaceous (ca. 102 Ma). The basalts are characterized by low MgO contents and mg-numbers but high rare earth element, high field strength element and large ion lithophile element contents and Nb–Ta negative anomalies. They have relatively uniform Sr–Nd isotope compositions with e Nd (t) values of − 4.09 to − 3.63. The andesites show enrichment of high field strength element and rare earth element wit…

Halogens in Mafic and Intermediate-Silica Content Magmas

2018

As volatile and variably mobile components, halogens play key roles in magmatic, metasomatic, mineralizing, and volcanic processes by influencing the physical and chemical properties of melts, fluids, and minerals. Volcanic emission of halogens to the atmosphere leads to long- and short-term impacts on atmospheric chemistry that range from global perturbation of the stratospheric O3 budget to more localized life-threatening contamination of soils and fresh water. The concentrations of F, Cl, Br, and I in melts, fluids, and minerals provide crucial geochemical information and insights into magmatic processes ranging from partial melting to volcanic eruptions. Halogen research is useful for e…

Highly Compact Partial Power Converter for a Highly Efficient PV-BESS Stacked Generation System

2022

The inherently intermittent nature of photovoltaic (PV) energy has brought increasing interest towards the integration between PV sources and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). In this paper, a Series Partial Power Processing (PPP) converter based on Capacitive Power Transfer (CPT) is proposed to integrate PV and BESS in a grid-connected inverter system. The proposed converter has been simulated according to a PV string capable to provide 1430 W under full irradiance conditions, a BESS nominal voltage equal to 215 V and a solar inverter assumed to operate with a minimum voltage of 150 V and a maximum current of 10 A. Simulation tests carried out at different conditions of solar radiatio…

Benign cementoblastoma: A case report

2006

In the past the benign cementoblastoma was recognized in the World Health Organization?s classification of odontogenic tumours as one of the cementoma neoplasias. Recently the benign cementoblastoma is included into ?Mesenchyme and/or odontogenic ectomesenchyme, with or without odontogenic epithelium? odontogenic tumours. Benign cementoblastoma has characteristic radiologic and microscopic features and it appears to be fused to the tooth roots. Symptoms may be totally absent, and when they do occur, pain and swelling are frequent findings. The final diagnosis is usually made histopathologically, but the clinical diagnosis is comparatively easy if it is examined radiographically. The tumour …

Photocatalytic oxidation of gaseous toluene on polycrystalline TiO2: FT-IR investigation of surface reactivity of different types of catalysts

2000

Commercial TiO 2 Merck and TiO 2 Degussa P25 powders were employed as the catalysts for the photo-oxidation of toluene. By using TiO 2 Merck benzaldehyde was found in gas phase as the main product of the toluene partial oxidation. After an initial transient period, this catalyst exhibited a high stability in the presence of water vapour in the gaseous mixture, whereas the photoproduction of benzaldehyde sharply decreases after removal of H 2 O from the feed IR spectra of the used catalyst revealed that in the absence of water vapour benzaldehyde is molecularly held on the catalyst surface. This feature was confirmed by co-adsorbing benzaldehyde and water on the fresh catalyst. By contrast, …

VOC's abatement: Photocatalytic oxidation of toluene in vapour phase on anatase TiO2 catalyst

1997

Publisher Summary The photocatalytic oxidation of toluene in the presence of water was performed in the gas–solid regime at room temperature by using TiO2. It has been found that the presence of water was beneficial to achieve the almost complete photo-oxidation of toluene to CO2 and H2O, in fact, only very small amounts of benzaldehyde vapor that is the main product of toluene partial oxidation, were detected. Volatile organic compounds, VOC's, are an important class of air pollutants usually found in the atmosphere of all urban and industrial areas. Toluene is one of these compounds, and because of its noxious nature several strategies have been identified to reduce its presence in indoor…

Full and Partial Agonism of Ionotropic Glutamate Receptors Indicated by Molecular Dynamics Simulations

2011

Ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs) are synaptic proteins that facilitate signal transmission in the central nervous system. Extracellular iGluR cleft closure is linked to receptor activation; however, the mechanism underlying partial agonism is not entirely understood. Full agonists close the bilobed ligand-binding domain (LBD), while antagonists prevent closure; the transmembrane ion channel either opens or stays closed, respectively. Although some bulky partial agonists produce intermediate iGluR-LBD closure, the available crystal structures also imply that the cleft can be shut with certain partial agonists. Recently, we have shown that the iGluR-LBD closure stage can be recreated b…
