Heterogeneous Photocatalysis and Photoelectrocatalysis: From Unselective Abatement of Noxious Species to Selective Production of High-Value Chemicals

2015

Heterogeneous photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis have been considered as oxidation technologies to abate unselectively noxious species. This article focuses instead on the utilization of these methods for selective syntheses of organic molecules. Some promising reactions have been reported in the presence of various TiO2 samples and the important role played by the amorphous phase has been discussed. The low solubility of most of the organic compounds in water limits the utilization of photocatalysis. Dimethyl carbonate has been proposed as an alternative green organic solvent. The recovery of the products by coupling photocatalysis with pervaporation membrane technology seems to be a…

Correlations and predictors of menarche age

1987

In a cross-sectional study of 452 girls between 10 and 16 years of age 36 indices of physical and 50 of mental development were tested for their correlation with age at menarche and chronological age, as well as for their predictive power for estimating menarche by multiple regression analysis. Indices of physical maturity and body weight when adjusted for chronological age showed the highest partial correlation coefficients with age at menarche. Among mental characters which show lower intercorrelations with menarche occurred the highest correlation coefficients for a handmotor factor "Spurennachzeichnen" and a factor "Gruppenabhangigkeit" (which indicates a type of social motivation). Use of Silica Based Materials as Modulators of the Lipase Catalyzed Hydrolysis of Fats under Simulated Duodenal Conditions

2020

[EN] The effect of silica materials and their functionalization in the lipase catalyzed fat hydrolysis has been scarcely studied. Fifteen silica materials were prepared and their effect on the fat hydrolysis was measured, under simulated duodenal conditions, using the pH-stat method. The materials are composed of the combination of three supports (Stober massive silica nanoparticles, Stober mesoporous nanoparticles and UVM-7) and four surface functionalizations (methyl, trimethyl, propyl and octyl). In addition, the non-functionalized materials were tested. The functional groups were selected to offer a hydrophobic character to the material improving the interaction with the fat globules an…

Surfactant based synthesis of oxidic catalysts and catalyst supports

1995

The preparation of mesostructured metal oxides based on the surfactant controlledsynthesis of MCM-41 is presented. It can be expected that the new metal oxide materials will exhibit a high surface area of nearly 1000 m 2 /g and could have a possible use as catalysts, especially in partial oxidation reactions and as hosts for quantum sized material, if the surfactant can be removed without destroying the structure.

Petrogenetic modelling of strongly residual metapelitic xenoliths within the southern Platreef, Bushveld Complex, South Africa

2010

Xenoliths of quartz-absent Fe-rich aluminous metapelite are common within the platinum group element-rich mafic ⁄ ultramafic magmatic rocks of the Platreef. Relative to well-characterized protoliths, the xenoliths are strongly depleted in K2O and H2O, and have lost a substantial amount of melt (>50 vol.%). Mineral equilibria calculations in the NCKFMASHTO system yield results that are consistent with observations in natural samples. Lower-grade rocks that lack staurolite constrain peak pressures to 2.5 kbar in the southern Platreef. Smaller xenoliths and the margins of larger xenoliths comprise micro-diatexite rich in coarse acicular corundum and spinel, which record evidence for the meta…

Nonlinear contractions involving simulation functions in a metric space with a partial order

2015

Very recently, Khojasteh, Shukla and Radenovic [F. Khojasteh, S. Shukla, S. Radenovic, Filomat, 29 (2015), 1189-1194] introduced the notion of Z-contraction, that is, a nonlinear contraction involving a new class of mappings namely simulation functions. This kind of contractions generalizes the Banach contraction and unifies several known types of nonlinear contractions. In this paper, we consider a pair of nonlinear operators satisfying a nonlinear contraction involving a simulation function in a metric space endowed with a partial order. For this pair of operators, we establish coincidence and common fixed point results. As applications, several related results in fixed point theory in a …

Approximation of fixed points of multifunctions in partial metric spaces

2013

Recently, Reich and Zaslavski [S. Reich and A.J. Zaslavski, Convergence of Inexact Iterative Schemes for Nonexpansive Set-Valued Mappings, Fixed Point Theory Appl. 2010 (2010), Article ID 518243, 10pages] have studied a new inexact iterative scheme for fixed points ofcontractive multifunctions. In this paper, using the partial Hausdorffmetric introduced by Aydi et al., we prove an analogous to a resultof Reich and Zaslavski for contractive multifunctions in the setting ofpartial metric spaces. An example is given to illustrate our result.

Citotoxicity of four types of resins used for removable denture bases: in vitro comparative analysis

2009

Objective: To compare the cytotoxicity of four types of resins used for manufacturing denture bases. Method and Materials: 9 disk-shaped samples of four resin (two heat-polymerized, one auto-polymerized, and one light-polymerized), 9 samples of glass (negative control) and 9 samples of lead (positive control) were made according to the manufacturer instructions. The materials were tested by contact with BALB/C 3T3 fibroblast cells. Each sample was tested after 24, 48 and 72 hours. The cellular vitality was verified through spectrophotometric analysis of the solution where the colour is directly related to the amount of metabolically active and living cells. The results were analyzed through…

Model performance of partial least squares in utilizing the visible spectroscopy data for estimation of algal biomass in a photobioreactor

2018

[EN] Spectroscopy technology and statistical methods (Partial Least Squares) have been integrated to develop a model that allows estimating the microalgal biomass in a photobioreactor. The model employing PLS combines the absorption spectrum measurements in the visible range (400-750 nm) with a microalgae cell density in a water sample. First, a calibration model was constructed using a calibration data set, and then, the predictive capacity of the model was determined by cross validation. Finally, an external validation of the predictive performance of the model was carried out with an independent data set. To test the accuracy of the model it was applied to different culture conditions yi…

Water retention behaviour and microstructural evolution of MX-80 bentonite during wetting and drying cycles

2014

MX-80 bentonite used in engineered barrier systems would be subjected to wetting and drying cycles. To assess the response of the material under such circumstances, a comprehensive experimental characterisation of the water retention behaviour of compacted MX-80 granular bentonite was performed in this study. A new methodology is proposed to investigate this behaviour under a constant volume condition for specimens prepared at different dry densities. The material was subjected to different hydraulic paths, including cyclic variations of the water content. As a result, an irreversible modification of the retention behaviour was observed when the material approached a fully saturated state …
