High-rate dead-time corrections in a general purpose digital pulse processing system
2015
The abilities on dead-time correction of a real-time digital pulse processing (DPP) system for high-rate high-resolution radiation measurements are presented. The DPP system, through a fast and slow analysis of the output waveform from radiation detectors, is able to perform an accurate estimation of the true input counting rate (ICR), a fine pulse height (energy) and shape (peaking time) analysis even at high ICRs.
Development of silicon pad detectors and readout electronics for a Compton camera
2003
Abstract Applications in nuclear medicine and bio-medical engineering may profit using a Compton camera for imaging distributions of radio-isotope labelled tracers in organs and tissues. These applications require detection of photons using thick position-sensitive silicon sensors with the highest possible energy and good spatial resolution. In this paper, research and development on silicon pad sensors and associated readout electronics for a Compton camera are presented. First results with low-noise, self-triggering VATAGP ASIC's are reported. The measured energy resolution was 1.1 keV FWHM at room temperature for the 241 Am photo-peak at 59.5 keV .
Estimating accidental coincidences for pixelated PET detectors and singles list-mode acquisition
2007
We have studied the validity of random estimation techniques for various low energy thresholds (LETs) and single list-mode data sets in small animal PET. While a LET below 255 keV helps to increase the sensitivity, it also results in an increase of random coincidences and inter-crystal scatter (ICS). The study is carried out for MADPET-II, a dual-layer positron emission tomography (PET) scanner prototype consisting of LSO crystals read out individually by APDs. The data are acquired in singles list-mode format, and coincidences are computed post-acquisition. To estimate randoms, we have used the delayed coincidence window method (DW), and the singles rate model (SR). Various phantoms were s…
Spectroscopy of Transfermium Nuclei
2006
The advent of efficient recoil separator devices coupled to large arrays of germanium detectors and versatile focal plane detection systems has in recent years allowed a wealth of spectroscopic information to be obtained for transfermium nuclei. At the Department of Physics at the University of Jyvaskyla, the RITU gas‐filled separator is employed in conjunction with the GREAT focal plane spectrometer and the JUROGAM array of germanium detectors. Whilst initial studies using these devices concentrated on even‐even nuclei, more recent experiments have attempted to study single‐particle properties by examining the structure of odd‐mass nuclei and multi‐quasiparticle states. An overview of the …
Challenges for solid state detectors tracking detectors in nuclear physics experiments at FAIR
2007
The compelling scientific goals of future nuclear physics experiments demand significant advances in detector technology. Nuclear physics opportunities at future facility FAIR have never been so bright, but the detector challenges must be met. With the essential questions concerning nuclear structure and dynamics, nuclear astrophysics, limits of nuclear stability, tests of fundamental interactions and symmetries all being realistic targets of studies of exotic nuclei, detector development efforts are strongly motivated. Several examples of developments for future fixed target experiments as well as experiments at storage ring are outlined.
Very Low Energy Protons From the Beta Decay of Proton Rich Nuclei For Nuclear Astrophysics
2010
The MARS group at TAMU has developed a new experimental technique to measure very low energy protons from β-delayed proton-decay of proton-rich nuclei produced and separated with the MARS recoil spectrometer at TAMU. Recently we have investigated the β-delayed p-decays of 23Al [1], and 31Cl [2], and obtained information on the resonances in the 22Na(p,γ)23Mg and 30P(p,γ) 31S reactions, respectively. These reactions are important in explosive H-burning in Novae [3]. Recently an experiment looking at the β-delayed p-decay of 20Mg was also done in order to obtain information on resonances in the 19Ne(p,γ)20Na reaction. A simple setup consisting of a telescope made of a thin double sided Si str…
Radiopurity control in the NEXT-100 double beta decay experiment
2013
An extensive material screening and selection process is underway in the construction of the "Neutrino Experiment with a Xenon TPC" (NEXT), intended to investigate neutrinoless double beta decay using a high-pressure xenon gas TPC filled with 100 kg of Xe enriched in 136Xe. Determination of the radiopurity levels of the materials is based on gamma-ray spectroscopy using ultra-low background germanium detectors at the Laboratorio Subterraneo de Canfranc (Spain) and also on Glow Discharge Mass Spectrometry. Materials to be used in the shielding, pressure vessel, electroluminescence and high voltage components and energy and tracking readout planes have been already taken into consideration. T…
Structure of N >= 126 nuclei produced in fragmentation of (238)U
2009
The nuclear structure of neutron‐rich N⩾126 nuclei have been investigated following their production via relativistic projectile fragmentation of a E/A = 1 GeV 238U beam on a Be target. The cocktail of secondary beam products were separated and identified using the GSI FRagment Separator (FRS). The nuclei of interest were implanted in a high‐granularity active stopper detector set‐up consisting of 6 double sided silicon strip detectors. The associated gamma‐ray transitions were detected with the RISING array, consisting of 15 Euroball cluster Ge‐detectors. Time‐correlated gamma decays from individually identified nuclear species have been recorded, allowing the clean identification of isome…
A simple two-detector method for precision intercomparisons of source strengths
1972
Abstract A two-detector method for comparing source strengths which largely eliminates errors due to uncertainties of geometric character is described. The simplest version of the method is based on the fact that, when a symmetric face-to-face geometry is being used, the change of the counting rate of one detector caused by the change of the position of the source is approximately compensated for by the change of the counting rate of the other detector. In a more versatile geometry, in which the axes of the detectors are slightly misaligned, the sum and the ratio of the two counting rates can be used in a simple manner to virtually eliminate uncertainties due to the shapes and horizontal po…
Clarification of the Three-Body Decay ofC12(12.71 MeV)
2003
Using $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decays of a clean source of $^{12}\mathrm{N}$ produced at the IGISOL facility, we have measured the breakup of the $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ (12.71 MeV) state into three $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ particles with a segmented particle detector setup. The high quality of the data permits solving the question of the breakup mechanism of the 12.71 MeV state, a longstanding problem in few-body nuclear physics. Among existing models, a modified sequential model fits the data best, but systematic deviations indicate that a three-body description is needed.
