Experiments on threshold pion electroproduction

Experimental techniques to access the reactions p(e, e′ p)π0 and d(e, e′ d)π0 at low four momentum transfer and close to threshold are presented. For p(e, e′ p)π0 results at Q 2=0.1 GeV2/c 2 are given and compared to chiral perturbation theory. A new experimental program on d(e, e′ d)π0 is presented.

High-statistics analysis of $$\bar pp \to \pi ^0 \pi ^0 \pi ^0 $$ at restat rest

Antiproton-proton annihilation at rest into 3π0 is analysed based on a data sample of about 500 000 high-quality 3π0 events. In this high-statistics Dalitz plot two structures in the region of π0π0 invariant masses of about 1500 MeV show up, a small band and a blob at higher masses. In a first attempt to describe the data two different models are used to parametrize the dynamical amplitudes leading to the same conclusion: the data require a 0+ + and also a 2+ + resonance in the 1500 MeV region.

Proton emission off nuclei induced by kaons in flight

We study the (K-, p) reaction on nuclei with a 1 GeV/c momentum kaon beam, paying special attention to the region of emitted protons having kinetic energy above 600 MeV, which was used to claim a deeply attractive kaon nucleus optical potential. Our model describes the nuclear reaction in the framework of a local density approach and the calculations are performed following two different procedures: one is based on a many-body method using the Lindhard function and the other is based on a Monte Carlo simulation. Large-angle production of charged pions by 3 GeV/c - 12.9 GeV/c protons on beryllium, aluminium and lead targets

Measurements of the double-differential pi(+/-) production cross-section in the range of momentum 100 MeV/c <= p < 800 MeV/c and angle 0.35 rad <= theta < 2.15 rad in proton-beryllium, proton-aluminium and proton-lead collisions are presented. The data were taken with the HARP detector in the T9 beam line of the CERN PS. The pions were produced by proton beams in a momentum range from 3 GeV/c to 12.9 GeV/c hitting a target with a thickness of 5% of a nuclear interaction length. Neutrino-nuclear responses for astro-neutrinos, single beta decays and double beta decays

Abstract Neutrino–nuclear responses associated with astro-neutrinos, single beta decays and double beta decays are crucial in studies of neutrino properties of interest for astro-particle physics. Measurement of the production cross-section of positive pions in the collision of 8.9 GeV/c protons on beryllium

The double-differential production cross-section of positive pions, $d^2\sigma^{\pi^{+}}/dpd\Omega$, measured in the HARP experiment is presented. The incident particles are 8.9 GeV/c protons directed onto a beryllium target with a nominal thickness of 5% of a nuclear interaction length. The measured cross-section has a direct impact on the prediction of neutrino fluxes for the MiniBooNE and SciBooNE experiments at Fermilab. After cuts, 13 million protons on target produced about 96,000 reconstructed secondary tracks which were used in this analysis. The Sun is fueled by a series of nuclear reactions that produce the energy that makes it shine. The primary reaction is the fusion of two protons into a deuteron, a positron and a neutrino. These neutrinos constitute the vast majority of neutrinos reaching Earth, providing us with key information about what goes on at the core of our star. Several experiments have now confirmed the observation of neutrino oscillations by detecting neutrinos from secondary nuclear processes in the Sun; this is the first direct spectral measurement of the neutrinos from the keystone proton-proton fusion. The nucleon axial mass and the MiniBooNE CCQE neutrino-nucleus data

We analyze the MiniBooNE CCQE $d\sigma/dT_\mu d\cos\theta_\mu$ data using a theoretical model that has proved to be quite successful in the analysis of nuclear reactions with electron, photon and pion probes. We find that RPA and multinucleon knockout turn out to be essential for the description of the MiniBooNE data. We show these measurements are fully compatible with former determinations of nucleon axial mass $M_A$, in contrast with several previous analyses, which have suggested an anomalously large value. We find, $M_A=1.08 \pm 0.03$ GeV. We also argue that the procedure, commonly used to reconstruct the neutrino energy for QE events from the muon angle and energy, could be unreliable…

Gamow-Teller unit cross sections for (t,He3) and (He3,t) reactions

The proportionality between differential cross sections at vanishing linear momentum transfer and Gamow-Teller transition strength, expressed in terms of the unit cross section (${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\sigma}\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}}_{\mathit{GT}}$), was studied as a function of target mass number for ($t$,$^{3}\mathrm{He}$) and ($^{3}\mathrm{He}$,$t$) reactions at $115A$ MeV and $140A$ MeV, respectively.
