Complete dipole response in [sup 208]Pb from high-resolution polarized proton scattering at 0°

At the Research Center for Nuclear Physics, Osaka, Japan, the 208Pb(p,p´) reaction was measured at Ep=295 MeV and scattering angles Θlab= 0° - 10°. A high energy resolution of the order of ΔE/E ≈ 8x10^-5 was achieved, corresponding to ΔE=25-30 keV (FWHM). Cross sections were extracted by a multipole decomposition analysis of the angular distributions. Dominant contributions at very forward angles originate from E1 excitation due to Coulomb projectile-target interaction and spin M1 transitions caused by the spin-isospin part of the proton-nucleus interaction. Anisotropy and memory during cage breaking events close to a wall

The slow dynamics in a glassy hard-sphere system is dominated by cage breaking events, i.e., rearrangements where a particle escapes from the cage formed by its neighboring particles. We study such events for an overdamped colloidal system by the means of Brownian dynamics simulations. While it is difficult to relate cage breaking events to structural mean field results in bulk, we show that the microscopic dynamics of particles close to a wall can be related to the anisotropic two-particle density. Observation of the thunderstorm-related ground cosmic ray flux variations by ARGO-YBJ

A correlation between the secondary cosmic ray flux and the near-earth electric field intensity, measured during thunderstorms, has been found by analyzing the data of the ARGO-YBJ experiment, a full coverage air shower array located at the Yangbajing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (4300 m a. s. l., Tibet, China). The counting rates of showers with different particle multiplicities, have been found to be strongly dependent upon the intensity and polarity of the electric field measured during the course of 15 thunderstorms. The UA4/2 experiment at the CERN SpS collider

Abstract The UA4/2 experiment performed at CERN to measure the ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the forward elastic scattering amplitude is described. The accent is placed on the improvements with respect to the previous UA4 experiment, especially on the much improved design of the high-β insertion and a high-resolution, highly multiplexed scintillating fiber tracking detector.

Measurement of the differential cross sectiondσ/dtin elasticpp¯scattering ats=1.96  TeV

We present a measurement of the elastic differential cross section $d\sigma(p\bar{p}\rightarrow p\bar{p})/dt$ as a function of the four-momentum-transfer squared t. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $\approx 31 nb^{-1}$ collected with the D0 detector using dedicated Tevatron $p\bar{p} $ Collider operating conditions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV and covers the range $0.26 <|t|< 1.2 GeV^2$. For $|t|<0.6 GeV^2$, d\sigma/dt is described by an exponential function of the form $Ae^{-b|t|}$ with a slope parameter $ b = 16.86 \pm 0.10(stat) \pm 0.20(syst) GeV^{-2}$. A change in slope is observed at $|t| \approx 0.6 GeV^2$, followed by a more gradual |t| dependence with increasing …

Measurement of the neutrino neutral-current elastic differential cross section on mineral oil atEν∼1  GeV

We report a measurement of the flux-averaged neutral-current elastic differential cross section for neutrinos scattering on mineral oil (CH{sub 2}) as a function of four-momentum transferred squared, Q{sup 2}. It is obtained by measuring the kinematics of recoiling nucleons with kinetic energy greater than 50 MeV which are readily detected in MiniBooNE. This differential cross-section distribution is fit with fixed nucleon form factors apart from an axial mass M{sub A} that provides a best fit for M{sub A}=1.39{+-}0.11 GeV. The Mainz A4 parity violation experiment (single spin asymmetries in elastic scattering)

Abstract The A4 experiment at the MAMI facility in Mainz measures a parity violating single spin asymmetry in the scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons off unpolarized protons. The longitudinal single spin asymmetry is parity violating and arises from the interference of the weak and electromagnetic one-boson exchange amplitude. It is sensitive to the strangeness contribution to the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon. Recently the transverse single spin asymmetry has gained much interest. Nuclear tests for the strange charge from factor of the nucleon

Abstract It is shown that the measurements of elastic and inelastic scattering of neutrinos and parity-violating asymmetry of longitudinally polarized electrons on spin-isospin zero nuclei would yield model independent information about the strangeness charge form factor. Nunerical estimates of the contribution of this form factor are presented for 4 He, 12 C and 16 O nuclei in impulse approximation using strangeness vector from factors of the nucleon recently suggested in the literature. A general relation between the P -odd asymmetry in electron scattering and the cross sections of neutrino and unpolarized electron scattering on spin zero nuclei is obtained.

Measurements of the antiproton-proton elastic cross section in the beam momentum range between 180 and 600 MeV/c

1991

The differential cross section for antiproton-proton elastic scattering has been measured for the beam momenta between 180 and 600 MeV/c. The real-to-imaginary ratio of the forward elastic scattering amplitude is derived from the Coulomb-nuclear interference. The ratio is found to be close to zero between 180 and 500 MeV/c with a minimum ofρ=−0.14 at 260 MeV/c. This result is contrary to model predictions. The phase shifts for thes-,p- andd-waves are extracted. The partial wave compositions of the elastic and inelastic cross sections have been determined. A large contribution of thep-wave is identified in the antiproton-proton interactions at small momenta.

The coherent weak charge of matter

We study the long-range force arising between two aggregates of ordinary matter due to a neutrino-pair exchange, in the limit of zero neutrino mass. Even if matter is neutral of electric charge, it is charged for this weak force. The interaction is described in terms of a coherent charge, which we call the weak flavor charge of aggregated matter. For each one of the interacting aggregates, this charge depends on the neutrino flavor as $Q_W^{\nu_e} = 2Z-N$, $Q_W^{\nu_\mu} = Q_W^{\nu_\tau} = -N$, where $Z$ is the number of protons and $N$ the number of neutrons. $Q_W^{\nu_e}$ depends explicitly on $Z$ because of the charged current contribution to $\nu_e e$ elastic scattering, while the $N$ t…
