Electroweak precision data and right-handed gauge bosons

1998

The implication of recent electroweak precision data for left-right symmetric models is examined. We establish a lower bound on the charged and neutral right-handed gauge bosons independent of the right-handed neutrino mass and of any restrictions or implied symmetries on the right KM matrix.

Standard model higher order corrections to the WW gamma/WWZ vertex

1995

Using the S--matrix pinch technique we obtain to one loop order gauge independent $\gamma W^-W^+$ and $Z W^-W^+$ vertices in the context of the standard model, with all incoming momenta off--shell. We show that the vertices so constructed satisfy simple QED--like Ward identities. These gauge invariant vertices give rise to expressions for the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole form factors of the $W$ gauge boson, which, unlike previous treatments, satisfy the crucial properties of infrared finiteness and perturbative unitarity.

Weak Interactions and the Standard Model of Strong and Electroweak Interactions

2011

This chapter gives an introduction to the phenomenology and the theory of weak interaction processes involving leptons and hadrons. In Sects. 3.1, 3.2 we collect the most prominent and characteristic properties of weak interactions as they follow from the analysis of a set of key experiments, old and recent. The following sections 3.3–3.5 deal with the elements of non-Abelian local gauge theories in general, and with the unified theory of electroweak and strong interactions of Glashow, Salam and Weinberg (GSW), in particular.

The Palatini Approach Beyond Einstein’s Gravity

2014

I review recent results obtained for extensions of general relativity formulated within the Palatini formalism, an approach in which metric and connection are treated as independent geometrical entities. The peculiar dynamics of these theories, governed by second-order equations and having no new degrees of freedom, makes them specially suitable to address certain aspects of quantum gravity phenomenology, construct nonsingular bouncing cosmologies, and explore black hole interiors, which in the Reissner-Nordstrom case develop a compact core of finite density instead of a point-like singularity.

Search for supersymmetry in events with four or more leptons in s=13  TeV pp collisions with ATLAS

2018

Results from a search for supersymmetry in events with four or more charged leptons (electrons, muons and taus) are presented. The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to 36.1 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions delivered by the Large Hadron Collider at s=13 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Four-lepton signal regions with up to two hadronically decaying taus are designed to target a range of supersymmetric scenarios that can be either enriched in or depleted of events involving the production and decay of a Z boson. Data yields are consistent with Standard Model expectations and results are used to set upper limits on the event yields from processes beyond the Standard Model. Exclu…

Flavour and Collider Interplay for SUSY at LHC7

2011

The current 7 TeV run of the LHC experiment shall be able to probe gluino and squark masses up to values larger than 1 TeV. Assuming that hints for SUSY are found in the jets plus missing energy channel by the end of a 5 fb$^{-1}$ run, we explore the flavour constraints on three models with a CMSSM-like spectrum: the CMSSM itself, a Seesaw extension of the CMSSM, and Flavoured CMSSM. In particular, we focus on decays that might have been measured by the time the run is concluded, such as $B_s\to\mu\mu$ and $\mu\to e\gamma$. We also analyse constraints imposed by neutral meson bounds and electric dipole moments. The interplay between collider and flavour experiments is explored through the u…

Search for Supersymmetry Using Final States with One Lepton, Jets, and Missing Transverse Momentum with the ATLAS Detector ins=7  TeVppCollisions

2011

This Letter presents the first search for supersymmetry in final states containing one isolated electron or muon, jets, and missing transverse momentum from sqrt{s} = 7 TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The data were recorded by the ATLAS experiment during 2010 and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 35 pb-1. No excess above the standard model background expectation is observed. Limits are set on the parameters of the minimal supergravity framework, extending previous limits. For A_0 = 0 GeV, tan beta = 3, mu > 0 and for equal squark and gluino masses, gluino masses below 700 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level.

Search for heavy charged long-lived particles in the ATLAS detector in 36.1  fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at s=13  TeV

2019

A search for heavy charged long-lived particles is performed using a data sample of 36.1  fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at s=13  TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The search is based on observables related to ionization energy loss and time of flight, which are sensitive to the velocity of heavy charged particles traveling significantly slower than the speed of light. Multiple search strategies for a wide range of lifetimes, corresponding to path lengths of a few meters, are defined as model independently as possible, by referencing several representative physics cases that yield long-lived particles within supersymmetric models, such as gluinos/squarks …

Prospects of Jet Tomography Using Hard Processes inside a Soft Medium

2008

The term ’tomography’ is commonly applied to the idea of studying properties of a medium by the modifications this medium induces to a known probe propagating through it. In the context of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, rare high transverse momentum (pT ) processes taking place alongside soft bulk-matter production can be viewed as a tomographic probe as long as the energy scales are such that the modification of high pT processes can be dominantly ascribed to interactions with the medium during the propagation of partons. Various high pT observables have been suggested for tomography, among them hard single hadron suppression, dihadron correlations and γ-hadron correlations. In th…

Search forB→K(*)νν¯and invisible quarkonium decays

2013

We search for the flavor-changing neutral-current decays B→K^(*)νν, and the invisible decays J/ψ→νν and ψ(2S)→νν via B→K^(*)J/ψ and B→K^(*)ψ(2S), respectively, using a data sample of 471×10^6 BB pairs collected by the BABAR experiment. We fully reconstruct the hadronic decay of one of the B mesons in the Υ(4S)→BB decay, and search for the B→K^(*)νν decay in the rest of the event. We observe no significant excess of signal decays over background and report branching fraction upper limits of B(B^+→K^+νν)<3.7×10^(-5), B(B^0→K^0νν)<8.1×10^(-5), B(B^+→K^(*+)νν)<11.6×10^(-5), B(B^0→K^(*0)νν)<9.3×10^(-5), and combined upper limits of B(B→Kνν)<3.2×10-5 and B(B→K^*νν)<7.9×10^(-5), all at the 90% con…
