Stratification Dynamics in Drying Colloidal Mixtures
2017
Stratification in binary colloidal mixtures was investigated using implicit-solvent molecular dynamics simulations. For large particle size ratios and film Péclet numbers greater than unity, smaller colloids migrated to the top of the film, while big colloids were pushed to the bottom, creating an "inverted" stratification. This peculiar behavior was observed in recent simulations and experiments conducted by Fortini et al. [ Phys. Rev. Lett. 2016 , 116 , 118301 ]. To rationalize this behavior, particle size ratios and drying rates spanning qualitatively different Péclet number regimes were systematically studied, and the dynamics of the inverted stratification were quantified in detail. Th…
Functional response of suspension feeding anuran larvae to different particle sizes at low concentrations (Amphibia)
1992
The influence of particle size, initial particle concentration and larval stage on the ingestion rate, ‘retention efficiency’, and filtering rate of anuran larvae with varying filter apparatus anatomy and different life histories was investigated for four species. Larvae of premetamorphic Stages 28 and 32 and prometamorphic Stage 40 were selected for filtering experiments on the basis of their different growth rates. Three different sizes of silica gel particles were offered as mock food. Particle concentration was measured photometrically. The Michaelis-Menten model was used to describe the dependency of ingestion rate, filtering rate, and ‘retention efficiency’ upon initial particle conce…
Spectroscopic Signature of the Superparamagnetic Transition and Surface Spin Disorder in CoFe2O4 Nanoparticles
2012
Phonons are exquisitely sensitive to finite length scale effects in a wide variety of materials. To investigate confinement in combination with strong magnetoelastic interactions, we measured the infrared vibrational properties of CoFe(2)O(4) nanoparticles and compared our results to trends in the coercivity over the same size range and to the response of the bulk material. Remarkably, the spectroscopic response is sensitive to the size-induced crossover to the superparamagnetic state, which occurs between 7 and 10 nm. A spin-phonon coupling analysis supports the core-shell model. Moreover, it provides an estimate of the magnetically disordered shell thickness, which increases from 0.4 nm i…
Monitoring Thiol–Ligand Exchange on Au Nanoparticle Surfaces
2018
Surface functionalization of nanoparticles (NPs) plays a crucial role in particle solubility and reactivity. It is vital for particle nucleation and growth as well as for catalysis. This raises the quest for functionalization efficiency and new approaches to probe the degree of surface coverage. We present an (in situ) proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) study on the ligand exchange of oleylamine by 1-octadecanethiol as a function of the particle size and repeated functionalization on Au NPs. Ligand exchange is an equilibrium reaction associated with Nernst distribution, which often leads to incomplete surface functionalization following “standard” literature protocols. Here, we show…
The measurement of light transmission through an irradiated fluidised bed
1983
Abstract The transmission of light through an irradiated fluidised bed with vertical flat walls containing catalytic particles has been experimentally studied. The amount of light transmitted through the reactor was measured at different levels by a photocell. The experimental variables studied included: (i) gas flow rate, varying from 2 to more than 10 times that required for minimum fluidisation; (ii) mean particle size, ranging from 0.138 to 0.275 mm; and (iii) internal bed thickness from 2.1 to 4.9 mm. The effect of the reflectance of the particles was also examined. Results show that the amount of light transmitted through a flat fluidised bed is low. The average transmitted light has …
Liposome Formation from Bile Salt–Lipid Micelles in the Digestion and Drug Delivery Model FaSSIFmod Estimated by Combined Time-Resolved Neutron and D…
2011
The flow of bile secretion into the human digestive system was simulated by the dilution of a bile salt-lipid micellar solution. The structural development upon the dilution of the fed state bile model FeSSIF(mod6.5) to the fasted state bile model FaSSIF(mod) was investigated by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) in crossed beam experiments to observe small and large structures in a size range of 1 nm to 50 μm in parallel. Because of the physiologically low lipid and surfactant concentrations of 2.625 mM egg-phosphatidylcholine and 10.5 mM taurocholate the sensitivity of the neutron-structural investigations was improved by partial solvent deuteration w…
An Artificial Neural Network Assisted Dynamic Light Scattering Procedure for Assessing Living Cells Size in Suspension
2020
Dynamic light scattering (DLS) is an essential technique used for assessing the size of the particles in suspension, covering the range from nanometers to microns. Although it has been very well established for quite some time, improvement can still be brought in simplifying the experimental setup and in employing an easier to use data processing procedure for the acquired time-series. A DLS time series processing procedure based on an artificial neural network is presented with details regarding the design, training procedure and error analysis, working over an extended particle size range. The procedure proved to be much faster regarding time-series processing and easier to use than fitti…
Supercritical CO2 extraction of essential oil from orange peel. Effect of operation conditions on the extract composition
1999
Abstract The supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) of orange essential oil was studied using dehydrated orange peel (0.0538 kg H2O/kg dm) from naveline cultivars as raw material and CO2 as solvent. The effect of operation conditions was analyzed in a series of experiments at temperatures between 293 and 323 K and pressures between 8 and 28 MPa. The collected extracts were analyzed and the relative composition of the essential oil was determined. Limonene was the principal component extracted, the optimum conditions for limonene extraction were 12.5 MPa and 308 K, in these conditions limonene represents more than 99.5% of the essential oil. Within the operating range conditions, the optimum f…
Predicting the in vivo release from a liposomal formulation by IVIVC and non-invasive positron emission tomography imaging
2010
This study aimed to predict the in vivo performance from the in vitro release of a low-molecular weight model compound, [(18)F]-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose ([(18)F]FDG), from liposomes and by means of positron emission tomography (PET). Liposomes composed of hydrogenated phosphatidylcholine (HPC) were prepared by a freeze-thaw method. Particle size distribution was measured by dynamic light scattering (DLS). In vitro release was examined with a dispersion method detecting the radioactivity of [(18)F]FDG. In vivo release of [(18)F]FDG, following i.p. injection of the liposomes in rats, was determined by using a Micro-PET scanner. Convolution was performed to predict the in vivo profiles from …
Bile acid alkylamide derivatives as low molecular weight organogelators: systematic gelation studies and qualitative structural analysis of the syste…
2011
A series of amino- and hydroxyalkyl amides of bile acids have been synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), (1)H and (13)C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), as well as electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) measurements. The ability of the synthesized molecules to promote gel formation was systematically investigated. Out of 396 combinations formed by 11 compounds and 36 different solvents, 22 gel-containing systems were obtained with 1% (w/v) gelator concentration. Apart from one exception, the gelator compounds were lithocholic acid derivatives. This challenges the general trend of bile acid-based physical gelators, accordin…
