On the measurement of bubble size distribution in gas–liquid contactors via light sheet and image analysis

Abstract Particle image velocimetry techniques coupled with advanced image processing tools are receiving an increasing interest for measuring flow quantities and local bubble-size distributions in gas–liquid mechanically agitated vessels. When trying to analyze image information the problem arises that bubble sizes are generally underestimated, due to the fact that the laser sheet used for lighting the system randomly cuts bubbles over non-diametrical planes, leading to an apparent bubble size distribution even in the ideal case of single sized bubbles. The development of standard operation procedures for the manufacture of a n-octadecyl bonded spherical silica packing from partially condensed tetraethoxysilane as silica source is described. The synthesis comprises five intermediate products and six synthesis steps which were examined according to their reproducibility and robustness. The results led to the optimisation of the manufacturing process for a n-octadecyl bonded silica. A numerical model of the cloud-topped planetary boundary-layer: radiative forcing of aerosols in stratiform clouds

In a numerical sensitivity study with the microphysical stratus model MISTRA the impact of aerosol particles on the time evolution of stratiform clouds is investigated. Four model runs with different aerosol size distributions are presented. Two size distributions are typical for maritime and continental air masses. The third model run consists of a mixture of maritime and rural aerosol particles, while in the fourth case study rural aerosol particles with a reduced water solubility are utilized. A fast and efficient modified sectional method for simulating multicomponent collisional kinetics

A fast and efficient method for simulating the evolution of internally mixed multicomponent particle size distributions for aerosol coagulation and droplet coalescence is developed. The technique is based upon a bin-wise sectionalization of the particle mass domain and by imposing the condition of mass conservation for each component. The distribution of each species as a function of the total particle mass is represented in each mass bin as a two-parameter exponential function. Synthesis, characterization and fine-tuning of bimodal poly(organosiloxane) nanoparticles

Abstract The acid catalyzed sol–gel type synthesis of polyorganosiloxane core-shell nanoparticles with removable PDMS core in aqueous dispersion leads to the inherent formation of a bimodal size distribution with smaller spheres having approximately 26 nm radii and larger nanoparticles with 60 nm in radius. One dimensional consolidation of Opalinus Clay from shallow depth

First experimental results on Opalinus Clay from shallow depth (< 30 m depth) are presented and compared to results on cores from Mont Terri Underground Rock Laboratory (~ 300 m depth). Samples were tested in one dimensional condition using an advanced experimental technique. The samples from the two sites show similar properties in terms of geotechnical characterization and one dimensional compressibility/swelling indexes, despite the different source depths.

Small changes in particle-size distribution dramatically delay and enhance nucleation in hard sphere colloidal suspensions.

We present hard-sphere crystallization kinetics for three samples with small differences in polydispersity. We show that an increase in polydispersity of 1% is sufficient to cause dramatic changes in the crystallization kinetics: Crystallization is delayed by almost one decade in time and quantitative and qualitative changes in the crystallization scenario are observed. Surprisingly the nucleation rate density is enhanced by almost a factor of 10. We interpret these results in terms of polydispersity limited growth, where local fractionation processes lead to a delayed but faster nucleation.

Effect of particle size distribution in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy analysis of mesoporous V–SiO2 catalysts

In this paper, the effect of particle size on Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) analysis of mesoporous V–SiO2 catalyst samples was investigated. The measurements were realized on three LIBS devices with different parameters. Concentrations of V in samples used for LIBS experiments previously determined by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) varied from 1.2 to 4.7 w/w%.
