The Power of the “Pursuit” Learning Paradigm in the Partitioning of Data

2019

Traditional Learning Automata (LA) work with the understanding that the actions are chosen purely based on the “state” in which the machine is. This modus operandus completely ignores any estimation of the Random Environment’s (RE’s) (specified as \(\mathbb {E}\)) reward/penalty probabilities. To take these into consideration, Estimator/Pursuit LA utilize “cheap” estimates of the Environment’s reward probabilities to make them converge by an order of magnitude faster. This concept is quite simply the following: Inexpensive estimates of the reward probabilities can be used to rank the actions. Thereafter, when the action probability vector has to be updated, it is done not on the basis of th…

Randomized heuristics for the Capacitated Clustering Problem

2017

In this paper, we investigate the adaptation of the Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure (GRASP) and Iterated Greedy methodologies to the Capacitated Clustering Problem (CCP). In particular, we focus on the effect of the balance between randomization and greediness on the performance of these multi-start heuristic search methods when solving this NP-hard problem. The former is a memory-less approach that constructs independent solutions, while the latter is a memory-based method that constructs linked solutions, obtained by partially rebuilding previous ones. Both are based on the combination of greediness and randomization in the constructive process, and coupled with a subsequent l…

TOPS-MODE approach for the prediction of blood-brain barrier permeation.

2004

The blood-brain barrier permeation has been investigated by using a topological substructural molecular design approach (TOPS-MODE). A linear regression model was developed to predict the in vivo blood-brain partitioning coefficient on a data set of 119 compounds, treated as the logarithm of the blood-brain concentration ratio. The final model explained the 70% of the variance and it was validated through the use of an external validation set (33 compounds of the 119, MAE = 0.33), a leave-one-out crossvalidation (q(2) = 0.65, S(press) = 0.43), fivefold full crossvalidation (removing 28 compounds in each cycle, MAE = 33, RMSE = 0.43) and the prediction of +/- values for an external test set …

Adaptive surface compression with geometric wavelets.

2008

The recent advances in computer graphics and digitization allow access to an ever finer three-dimensional modelling of the world. The critical challenges with 3D models lie in their transmission and rendering, which must fit the heterogeneity of the end resources (network bandwidth, display terminals . . . ). In this context, this thesis investigates the progressive compression and transmission of 3D models, based on multiresolution analysis, to provide a scalable representation of these geometric models. This work is part of "CoSurf", a collaborative research project involving LIRIS laboratory and France Télécom R&D in Rennes. The proposed hierarchical compression method is based on a wave…

Strain analysis and vorticity of flow in the Northern Sardinian Variscan Belt: Recognition of a partitioned oblique deformation event

2008

Abstract A field example of strain partitioning has been analysed along the Nurra–Asinara transect of the NW Sardinian Variscan chain (Italy). The section in the Nurra–Asinara area is in a continuous sequence of tectono-metamorphic complexes made of low- to high-grade metamorphic rocks affected by a polyphase tectonic history. The principal fabric of the area is controlled by a D2 progressive deformation phase in which the strain is partitioned into folds and shear zone domains. The D2 stretching lineation and shear sense show a clear change from south to north. The principal meso- and micro-structures, vorticity gauges and a quantitative kinematic analysis of local strain suggest that the …

Les micromammifères du département de l'Isère (Rhône-Alpes, France) : répartition par district naturel.

2013

Micromammals of the French department of Isère (Rhône-Alpes) : distribution by natural district. - This article presents the distribution of the species of micromammals of the department of Isère (Rhône-Alpes, France), by natural district from the analysis of 78,100 specimens inventoried and registered in a database of the micromammals of the department. For each species, a comparison of its distribution is made between districts. This synthesis is a photograph of the current knowledge and it also allows to define the future researches to improve the knowledge and the protection of micromammals in Isère.

Microfungal Alkylation and Volatilization of Selenium Adsorbed by Goethite

2009

Selenium adsorbed in the oxyanionic form by Fe-oxides like goethite is considered of benefit for long-term stabilization of (79)Se under near field conditions of radionuclide waste disposal sites. However, microbe-mediated volatilization of the uranium fission product (79)Se has not yet been considered for risk assessment based on the use of the water-solid distribution coefficient K(D). We have performed incubation experiments in a ternary system selenium-microbe-goethite and show that mycobiota including the common black microfungi genera Alternaria alternata are capable of volatilizing the Se even if immobilized by goethite. The microfungi were incubated in a standardized nutrient broth …

Calculation of partition coefficient and hydrophobic moment of the secondary structure of lysozyme

2001

A method that permits a semiquantitative estimate of the partitioning of any solute between any two media is presented. As an example, the partition coefficients and hydrophobic moment of the secondary structure of lysozyme are calculated. Program GSCAP is written as a version of Pascal's solvent-dependent conformational analysis (SCAP) program. The dipole moments calculated for the helices are trebled with respect to that for the sheet. For helices, the main contribution to the water-accessible surface area is the hydrophobic term, while the hydrophilic part dominates in the sheet. Molecular globularity and the three studied partition coefficients differentiate between helices and sheet.

CODING PARTITIONS OF REGULAR SETS

2009

A coding partition of a set of words partitions this set into classes such that whenever a sequence, of minimal length, has two distinct factorizations, the words of these factorizations belong to the same class. The canonical coding partition is the finest coding partition that partitions the set of words in at most one unambiguous class and other classes that localize the ambiguities in the factorizations of finite sequences. We prove that the canonical coding partition of a regular set contains a finite number of regular classes and we give an algorithm for computing this partition. From this we derive a canonical decomposition of a regular monoid into a free product of finitely many re…

Sources of nitrous oxide and fate of mineral nitrogen in sub-Arctic permafrost peat soils

2021

Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from permafrost-affected terrestrial ecosystems have received little attention, largely because they have been thought to be negligible. Recent studies, however, have shown that there are habitats in subarctic tundra emitting N2O at high rates, such as bare peat surfaces on permafrost peatlands. The processes behind N2O production in these high-emitting habitats are, however, poorly understood. In this study, we established an in situ 15N-labelling experiment with the main objectives to partition the microbial sources of N2O emitted from bare peat surfaces (BP) on permafrost peatlands and to study the fate of ammonium and nitrate in these soils and in adjacent …
