Ionic partition diagram of tetraphenylporphyrin at the water|1,2-dichloroethane interface
2011
diagram of 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21H,23H-porphine (H2TPP) at the water|1,2-dichloroethane interface using a simple Born solvation model. This zone diagram shows under which form this porphyrin is present, i.e. neutral, monoprotonated or diprotonated, and in which phase i.e. either in the aqueous or the organic phase as a function of the aqueous pH and the interface polarisation that can be controlled externally or by the distribution of supporting electrolytes. This diagram explains why the monoprotonated form has been difficult to observe when doing biphasic pH titrations
Calorimetric study of the solubilization of ethylenediamine, N,N-dimethylaminoethylamine and N,N,N?,N?-tetramethylethylenediamine by reversed AOT mic…
1993
Distribution constants and standard enthalpies of transfer of ethylenediamine (en), N,N-dimethylaminoethylamine (dmen) and N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine (tmen) partitioned between n-heptane and water containing reversed sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) micelles as a function of the molar concentration ratio R (R=[water]/[AOT]) were evaluated by a calorimetric method. The results show that en, dmen and tmen molecules, solubilized in the reversed micelles, are distributed between the micellar aqueous core and the micellar palisade layer. An analysis of the thermodynamic parameters of the partition process demonstrates the peculiar solvent properties of the water containing…
Testing selected optimal descriptors with artificial neural networks
2013
Eleven properties have been modeled with the objective of checking the importance for model purposes of mixed descriptors made of empirical parameters, molecular connectivity indices and random numbers. The mixed descriptors with random indices have a descriptive character which is satisfactorily confirmed by the leave-one-out method of statistical analysis. The introduction of a partition of the set of compounds into training and evaluation sets decreases drastically the probability to find a mixed descriptor with random indices with good model quality. Two properties, the magnetic susceptibility and the elutropic values, insist on having optimal descriptors with random indices. The overal…
New screening approach for risk assessment of pesticides in ambient air
2014
We present a novel screening approach for inhalation risk assessment of currently used pesticides (CUPs) in ambient air, based on the measurements of pesticide levels in the inhalable fraction of the particulate matter (PM10). Total concentrations in ambient air (gas + particle phases) were estimated using a theoretical model of distribution of semi-volatile organic compounds between the gas and the particulate phase based on the octanol-air partition (K-oa) of each pesticide. The proposed approach was used in a pilot study conducted in a rural station in Valencia (Spain) from April through to October 2010. Twenty out of 82 analysed pesticides were detected in average concentrations ranging…
Approaches to partitioning the global UVER irradiance into its direct and diffuse components in Valencia, Spain
2012
[1] The paper explores methods of partitioning the hourly average UV erythemal flux into its direct and diffuse components for Valencia, Spain. It is shown that the cloud modification factor, the ratio of measured to cloudless erythemal flux relates linearly to the fraction of the measured irradiance that is diffuse. This relationship was developed further into two simple models- a linear and nonlinear one. The models are characterized by an effective cloud cover to partition the global erythemal flux. The diffuse fraction increases linearly with cloud cover in the linear model, but exponentially in the nonlinear one. The models may be used to partition the direct and diffuse irradiance wit…
Airborne measurements of the nitric acid partitioning in persistent contrails
2009
This study reports the first systematic measurements of nitric acid (HNO3) uptake in contrail ice particles at typical aircraft cruise altitudes. During the CIRRUS-III campaign cirrus clouds and almost 40 persistent contrails were probed with in situ instruments over Germany and Northern Europe in November 2006. Besides reactive nitrogen, water vapor, cloud ice water content, ice particle size distributions, and condensation nuclei were measured during 6 flights. Contrails with ages up to 12 h were detected at altitudes 10–11.5 km and temperatures 211–220 K. These contrails had a larger ice phase fraction of total nitric acid (HNO3ice/HNO3tot = 6%) than the ambient cirrus layers (3%). On av…
Tibial combs in the Cydnidae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) and their functional, taxonomic and phylogenetic significance
2005
Tibial combs in representatives of the family Cydnidae are described in detail for the first time. The structure was studied in 98 species of 58 genera representing all the subfamilies, among them 16 species were investigated using scanning electron microscopic (SEM) techniques. In addition, Parastrachia japonensis (Scott, 1880) of the family Parastrachiidae, and two species of Dismegistus Amyot and Serville, 1843 (a genus of uncertain systematic position within Pentatomoidea) have also been studied. Morphological terminology is proposed for all the structures connected with tibial combs and the term ‘the tibial comb complex’ is suggested; its functional, taxonomic and phylogenetic signific…
Trace element partitioning in lamproitic magmas—the Gaussberg olivine leucitite
2004
Abstract Partition coefficients for compatible and incompatible trace elements for use in modelling the origin and evolution of lamproitic and other potassic rocks are reported. These are based on values obtained by in situ determination using laser ablation microprobe-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LAM-ICP-MS) on mineral/glass pairs in examples of the Gaussberg olivine leucitite, a classic leucite lamproite. Leucite/melt partition coefficients for 32 elements show values above 1 only for Cs and Rb, whereas values for Ni, Ga and Co are 0.4–0.1. DLc/Lq for most other elements are in the range 0.07–0.0005, and delineate a gently sloping pattern to lower values for elements gene…
The Myriad Virtues of Wavelet Trees
2009
Wavelet Trees have been introduced in [Grossi, Gupta and Vitter, SODA '03] and have been rapidly recognized as a very flexible tool for the design of compressed full-text indexes and data compressors. Although several papers have investigated the beauty and usefulness of this data structure in the full-text indexing scenario, its impact on data compression has not been fully explored. In this paper we provide a complete theoretical analysis of a wide class of compression algorithms based on Wavelet Trees. We also show how to improve their asymptotic performance by introducing a novel framework, called Generalized Wavelet Trees, that aims for the best combination of binary compressors (like,…
Techniques to measure sorption and migration between small molecules and packaging. A critical review
2015
The mass transfer parameters diffusion and sorption in food and packaging or between them are the key parameters for assessing a food product's shelf-life in reference to consumer safety. This has become of paramount importance owing to the legislations set by the regulated markets. The technical capabilities that can be exploited for analyzing product–package interactions have been growing rapidly. Different techniques categorized according to the state of the diffusant (gas or liquid) in contact with the packaging material are emphasized in this review. Depending on the diffusant and on the analytical question under review, the different ways to study sorption and/or migration are present…
