Host kairomone learning and foraging success in an egg parasitoid: a simulation model

Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) is an egg parasitoid that recognises chemical residues left by its host the green stink bug Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) as kairomone signals, enabling it to find egg masses in which to lay eggs. 2. Passive congregation based particle swam optimization (pso) with self-organizing hierarchical approach for non-convex economic dispatch

This paper proposes a passive congregation based PSO with self-organizing hierarchical algorithm approach for solving the economic dispatch problem of power system, where some of the units have prohibited operating zones. This Algorithm is known to perform better than conventional gradient based optimization methods for non-convex optimization problems. Conventional PSO algorithm is a population based heuristic search, employing problem of premature convergence. In this work, an innovative approach based on the concept of passive congregation based PSO with self-organizing hierarchical approach is employed to overcome the problem of premature convergence in classical PSO method.

High cognitive sensitivity to activational effects of testosterone in parents of offspring with autism spectrum disorders

Abstract The existence of mild forms of autistic-like characteristics in parents of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) has been defined as a broader autistic phenotype (BAP). Excessive prenatal exposure to testosterone (T) seems to play a role in its development. The aims of this study were to characterize whether ASD parents show masculinized brains or high T prenatal exposure compared to a normative population, using cognitive questionnaires, and also to examine the T level changes in response to different cognitive tasks. Design and optimization of bonded patch repairs of laminated composite structures

International audience; The present study proposes a method for design optimization of external patched repairs. The tensile behavior of notched specimens with patched repair was studied using finite element analysis and compared with experimental results. It was found that high stress concentrations along the transverse edges of circular patches and/or at the longitudinal edges of the hole leads to early damage initiation in the parent plate. Dendrites are highly complex 3D structures that define neuronal morphology and connectivity and are the predominant sites for synaptic input. Defects in dendritic structure are highly consistent correlates of brain diseases. However, the precise consequences of dendritic structure defects for neuronal function and behavioral performance remain unknown. Here we probe dendritic function by using genetic tools to selectively abolish dendrites in identified Drosophila wing motoneurons without affecting other neuronal properties. Enhanced tonic GABAA inhibition in typical absence epilepsy

The cellular mechanisms underlying typical absence seizures, which characterize various idiopathic generalized epilepsies, are not fully understood, but impaired γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic inhibition remains an attractive hypothesis. In contrast, we show here that extrasynaptic GABAA receptor–dependent 'tonic' inhibition is increased in thalamocortical neurons from diverse genetic and pharmacological models of absence seizures. Increased tonic inhibition is due to compromised GABA uptake by the GABA transporter GAT-1 in the genetic models tested, and GAT-1 is crucial in governing seizure genesis. The subplate is a transient layer between the cortical plate and intermediate zone in the developing cortex. Thalamo-cortical axons form temporary synapses on subplate neurons (SPns) before invading the cortical plate. Transgenic mice deficient in the alpha6 subunit of the GABA(A) receptor show reduced levels of the delta subunit protein and an altered GABA(A) receptor pharmacology, suggesting selective assembly mechanisms. Delta reduced the binding of [3H]Ro15-4513 or t-butylbicyclophosphoro[35S]thionate and, to a lesser extent, [3H]muscimol to recombinant alpha1beta1gamma2(delta), alpha4beta1gamma2(delta) and alpha6beta1gamma2(delta) receptors, paralleled by diminished GABA-evoked maximal currents in electrophysiological recordings for the latter one.
