Ocular angiogenesis: translating preclinical indications to successful clinical development

2004

Angiogenesis-related ocular diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or diabetic retinopathy have a high socioeconomic impact in western countries and are the leading causes of blindness. Conventional treatment modalities for AMD are of limited success. Inhibition of new vessel formation and targeting of pathological vessels seem to be the best choice in AMD. A variety of animal models mimic the relevant aspects of choroidal neovascularisation (CNV) and allow for therapy screening. Preclinical and clinical studies show that a variety of different strategies are very promising. Stategies include inhibition or blocking of vascular endothelial growth factor, a key player in angi…

Decision Making Impairment: A Shared Vulnerability in Obesity, Gambling Disorder and Substance Use Disorders?

2016

Introduction Addictions are associated with decision making impairments. The present study explores decision making in Substance use disorder (SUD), Gambling disorder (GD) and Obesity (OB) when assessed by Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) and compares them with healthy con- trols (HC). Methods For the aims of this study, 591 participants (194 HC, 178 GD, 113 OB, 106 SUD) were assessed according to DSM criteria, completed a sociodemographi c interview and con- ducted the IGT. Results SUD, GD and OB present impaired decision making when compared to the HC in the over- all task and task learning, however no differences are found for the overall performanc e inthe IGT among the clinical groups. Results…

Bifunctional dentifrice: Amorphous polyphosphate a regeneratively active sealant with potent anti- Streptococcus mutans activity

2017

Abstract Objective In this study we demonstrate that inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) exhibits a dual protective effect on teeth: it elicits a strong antibacterial effect against the cariogenic bacterium Streptococcus mutans and, in form of amorphous calcium polyP microparticles (size of 100–400 nm), it efficiently reseals cracks/fissures in the tooth enamel and dentin. Methods Three different formulations of amorphous polyP microparticles (Ca-polyP, Zn-polyP and Sr-polyP) were prepared. Results Among the different polyP microparticles tested, the Ca-polyP microparticles, as a component of a newly developed formulation of a dentifrice, turned out to be most effective in inhibiting growth of …

Salt accumulation and effects within foliage of Tilia × vulgaris trees from the street greenery of Riga, Latvia

2020

International audience; Green infrastructures within sprawling cities provide essential ecosystem services, increasingly undermined by environmental stress. The main objective in this study was to relate the allocation patterns of NaCl contaminants to injury within foliage of lime trees mechanistically and distinguish between the effects of salt and other environmental stressors. Using field material representative of salt contamination levels in the street greenery of Riga, Latvia, the contribution of salt contaminants to structural and ultrastructural injury was analyzed, combining different microscopy techniques. On severely salt-polluted and dystrophic soils, the foliage of street lime …

Improved Assessment of Pathological Regurgitation in Patients with Prosthetic Heart Valves by Multiplane Transesophageal Echocardiography

1997

The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic increment of individually optimized axes in the assessment of pathological prosthetic valve regurgitation. Forty-two patients with pathologically regurgitant prostheses in the aortic (n = 21), mitral (n = 15), and tricuspid (n = 6) positions were examined by multiplane transesophageal echocardiography. The investigation was performed utilizing the transverse axis first, the longitudinal axis second, and the intermediate axes afterwards. The presence of regurgitation, the differentiation between trans- and perivalvular origin, and the localization of perivalvular leakages at the sewing ring were evaluated. Findings in the biplane and inter…

Thioflavin T templates amyloid β(1–40) conformation and aggregation pathway

2015

Aβ(1-40) peptide supramolecular assembly and fibril formation processes are widely recognized to have direct implications in the progression of Alzheimer's disease. The molecular basis of this biological process is still unknown and there is a strong need of developing effective strategies to control the occurring events. To this purpose the exploitation of small molecules interacting with Aβ aggregation represents one of the possible routes. Moreover, the use specific labeling has represented so far one of the most common and effective methods to investigate such a process. This possibility in turn rests on the reliability of the probe/labels involved. Here we present evidences of the effe…

Pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis as a late complication of chemotherapy agents

2014

To the Editor: We identified six patients with clinical, radiographic and physiological features typical of pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis (PPFE). In the six cases, PPFE may have been causally related to prior alkylating drugs used to treat malignacy, namely cyclophosphamide in five of the cases and carmustine (BCNU (1,3-bis-(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea)) in one. Based on an extensive review of the literature, we suspect that similar cases may have already been reported in the past 4 decades but have not been recognised either as PPFE or as drug-induced in nature. In 2004, Frankel et al. [1] described a then-new clinicopathologic entity, which they termed “idiopathic PPFE”. The authors i…

Spanish multicentre study on morbidity and pathogenicity of tracheal bronchus in children.

2019

Tracheal bronchus (TRB) has been generally considered an anatomical variant of the tracheobronchial tree without a precise pathological effect. Its prevalence is estimated to be between 0.2% to 3% of all children undergoing bronchoscopy and scientific information has been limited to case reports or small case series. Our working hypothesis was that TRB could trigger by itself recurrent or persistent respiratory symptoms. The objective of this retrospective and multicentre study of children with a diagnosis of TRB, coming from the main paediatric pulmonology units of Spain, was to determine the anatomical and clinical characteristics, including comorbidities, of TRB in childhood and their im…

Potential Biomarkers Associated with Multiple Sclerosis Pathology

2021

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that involves an intricate and aberrant interaction of immune cells leading to inflammation, demyelination, and neurodegeneration. Due to the heterogeneity of clinical subtypes, their diagnosis becomes challenging and the best treatment cannot be easily provided to patients. Biomarkers have been used to simplify the diagnosis and prognosis of MS, as well as to evaluate the results of clinical treatments. In recent years, research on biomarkers has advanced rapidly due to their ability to be easily and promptly measured, their specificity, and their reproducibility. Biomarkers are classified into several categor…
