Re-canalization of cerebral vessels in ischemic stroke is pivotal to rescue dysfunctional brain areas that are exposed to moderate hypoxia within the penumbra from irreversible cell death. Goal of the present study was to evaluate the effect of moderate hypoxia followed by reoxygenation (MHR) on the evolution of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity in brain endothelial cells (BEC). In vivo analysis of noise dependent activation of white blood cells and microvascular dysfunction in mice

Biochemical identification and tissue-specific expression patterns of keratins in the zebrafish Danio rerio

We have identified a number of type I and type II keratins in the zebrafish Danio rerio by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, complementary keratin blot-binding assay and immunoblotting. These keratins range from 56 kDa to 46 kDa in molecular mass and from pH 6.6 to pH 5.2 in isoelectric point. Type II zebrafish keratins exhibit significantly higher molecular masses (56-52 kDa) compared with the type I keratins (50-48 kDa), but the isoelectric points show no significant difference between the two keratin subclasses (type II: pH 6.0-5.5; type I: pH 6.1-5.2). Microcirculatory Dysfunction Induced by Cigarette Smoking

This review deals with the deleterious effects of cigarette smoking on the microcirculation, both in terms of morphological (i.e., vessel wall injury, capillary loss) and functional aspects. The latter concerns predominantly changes in tissue perfusion and its regulatory mechanisms (i.e., reactive hyperemia, sequestration of blood cells in the microcirculation). The mechanisms of action of cigarette smoking on the microcirculation include compromised endothelial-dependent vasorelaxation, platelet aggregation, endothelial cell dysfunction, and the activation of circulating leukocytes. Nachweis von alpha1-Fetoprotein an Blutspuren mit Hilfe der Celluloseacetatfolien-(CAF)-Elektrophorese

Die von Patzelt, Geserick und Lignitz fur Agargelelektrophorese zum Nachweis von alpha1-Fetoprotein beschriebene Technik konnte mit Erfolg auf das Celluloseacetatfolien-(CAF)-System ubertragen werden. Die Unterscheidbarkeit von Neugeborenen- oder Fetalblut und Erwachsenenblut wurde an 219 Neugeborenenbluten gepruft, die auf verschiedenen Spurentragern (Glas, Holz, Filterpapier und Leinen) getrocknet worden waren und gelang ausnahmslos nach Lagerung bei Zimmertemperatur bis zu einem Spurenalter von 8 Monaten. Die Spurentrager beeinflusten die Darstellung nicht.

Einflu� von Medikamenten auf den Acetaldehydspiegel im Blut nach Alkoholzufuhr (enzymatische Bestimmung des Acetaldehyd)

Mit einer enzymatischen und damit spezifischen Bestimmung des Acetaldehyd in Korperflussigkeiten konnte folgendes festgestellt werden. 1. Im Blutserum von Ratten konnte in der Mehrzahl der Falle keine Acetaldehydkonzentration bestimmt werden, im Einzelfall jedoch bis zu 0,09 mg- %. Die bisher in der Literatur angegebenen Normwerte hinsichtlich des Acetaldehydgehaltes, die aber mit relativ unspezifischen Methoden bestimmt worden waren, liesen sich an Ratten nicht bestatigen. 2. Die bisher mitgeteilten Konzentrationen an Acetaldehyd nach Verabreichung einer Sattigungsdosis von Antabus und Alkohol liegen uber 2 mg- %.
