Localization of parvalbumin, calretinin, and calbindin D-28k in identified extraocular motoneurons and internuclear neurons of the cat
1998
Calcium-binding proteins have been shown to be excellent markers of specific neuronal populations. We aimed to characterize the expression of calcium-binding proteins in identified populations of the cat extraocular motor nuclei by means of immunohistochemistry against parvalbumin, calretinin, and calbindin D-28k. Abducens, medial rectus, and trochlear motoneurons were retrogradely labeled with horseradish peroxidase from their corresponding muscles. Oculomotor and abducens internuclear neurons were retrogradely labeled after horseradish peroxidase injection into either the abducens or the oculomotor nucleus, respectively. Parvalbumin staining produced the highest density of immunoreactive …
Frequency of mesiodens in the pediatric population in North India: A radiographic study
2013
Objectives: Mesiodens are the most common supernumerary teeth, occurring in 0.15% to 2.2% of the population. The aim of the present study was to analyze the frequency and radiological features of mesiodens in the pediatric population. Material and methods: The study was based on the radiographic evaluation of 4133 pediatric patients of the age range of 4-15 years, attending the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology during the time period between September 2008 to December 2012. In addition to the presence of a supernumerary tooth between the 2 central incisors, data regarding the number, position, shape and associated complications were also recorded. Results: The prevalence of mesioden…
0132: Identifying familial hypercholesterolemia from registries of patients with acute myocardial infarction: an algorithm-based approach
2016
Background and aims Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is at very high risk of early myocardial infarction (MI). The prevalence of FH, which is estimated to be at least 1:500 in the general population, remains unclear in patients with acute MI. From databases of 2 French regional and nationwide registries of acute MI (RICO and FAST-MI, respectively), we aimed to determine FH prevalence by developing a specific algorithm. Methods and results Consecutive patients with AMI ≤48 hours of onset included 1) in FAST-MI: during a one-month period in 213 institutions at the end of 2005 and 2) in RICO: from January 2001 December 2013 (≈13y), were considered in the 2 databases. The algorithm was adapte…
Psychopathologies des demandeurs d’asile en Europe, traumatisme et fonctionnement défensif
2015
Refugees seeking asylum are a particularly vulnerable population. It has been observed that among the most commonly-occurring disorders exhibited in this population, there is a high incidence of post-traumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and depression. These disorders may be linked to the difficult paths that refugees are forced to undertake, as well as to different traumatic events which are particularly destructive psychologically (deliberate physical, sexual and/or psychological violence, traumatic bereavements in the context of war, or social and political instability, socio-economic, familial or administrative difficulties), which compromise their view of their shor…
Fibrinogen plasma levels in an apparently healthy general population: Relation to environmental and genetic determinants
1998
SummaryElevated fibrinogen levels are an independent risk factor for cardiovascular ischemic disease. We investigated the relationship between cardiovascular ischemic risk factors, the fibrinogen Bβ-chain G/A-455 polymorphism and plasma fibrinogen levels in 989 apparently healthy subjects. Fibrinogen values were higher in subjects with C reactive protein (C-RP) > 0.33 mg/dl, BMI > 23.9 kg/m2, total cholesterol > 4.84 mmol/l, triglycerides >1.02 mmol/l, PAI-1 antigen >12.2 ng/ml, carriers of the A allele, first-degree relative history of coronary artery disease, or consuming >10 cigarettes per day (p <0.01). Men and ethanol drinkers showed lower plasma fibrinogen levels …
Remdesivir for the Treatment of Hospitalised Patients with COVID-19 (DisCoVeRy): A Randomised, Controlled, Open-Label Trial
2021
Background: The antiviral efficacy of remdesivir is still controversial. We aimed at evaluating its clinical effectiveness in patients with COVID-19 requiring oxygen and/or ventilator support. Methods: In this European multicentre, open-label, parallel-group, randomised, controlled trial in adults hospitalised with COVID-19 (DisCoVeRy, NCT04315948; EudraCT2020-000936-23), participants were randomly allocated to receive usual standard of care alone or in combination with intravenous remdesivir (200 mg on day 1, then 100 mg once-daily for 9 days or until discharge). Treatment assignation was performed via web-based randomisation stratified on illness severity and administrative European regio…
Histopathologic analysis of gingival lesions : a 20-year retrospective study at one academic dental center
2018
Background The gingiva is part of the periodontium supporting structures surrounding the teeth and commonly involved in gingival and periodontal conditions. Assessing the distribution of gingival lesions is important for evaluating the prevalence of periodontal disease in the population to optimize the oral health care services. The purpose of this study is to report the frequency and distribution of gingival lesions biopsied from 1996-2016. Material and methods This cross-sectional retrospective study retrieved data from all gingival lesions biopsied from 1996-2016 and sent to the King Abdulaziz University Dental Hospital oral pathology laboratory. Histologic sections were reviewed in a bl…

Effects of marathon fatigue on running kinematics and economy
2007
International audience; The influence of marathon fatigue on both running kinematics and economy was investigated with 8 subjects. The measurements included a treadmill test at 3 steady submaximal speeds performed before and after the marathon. One complete left leg cycle was videotaped at 100 Hz from the left side at each speed. The analysis included contact time (braking and push-off') and flight time as well as displacements and angular velocities of the left hip and knee. This analysis was complemented by the measurements of the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the gastrocnemius muscle at each running velocity, and energy expenditure (E) of the last 30.s at the 2 slowest speeds. The …
Electroretinography in newborn and young infants without sedation
2009
International audience; Purpose: Electroretinography (ERG) is frequently a relevant diagnostic test in pediatric ophthalmology and neurology. ERG at early age is not easy to perform and requires simplified recording protocols and specific norms. In our laboratory especially devoted to developmental studies, an ERG recording method has been adapted to the very young infant. Methods: Monocular ERG was performed in 60 healthy subjects from birth at term to 3 years of age. ERG was recorded using disposable contact lens electrodes in the conscious child with eyes open, after topical anesthesia but without sedation. Stimulus was a white flash (color temperature 5600°K, energy at source 0.3J) appl…
