Odontogenic Myxoma: Follow-Up of 13 cases after conservative surgical treatment and review of the literature

2021

Background We aim to report a serie of odontogenic myxoma over a 40-year period. Material and Methods We conducted a retrospective and sectional review of OM cases. The clinical, radiographic and treatment data were collected from clinical records included cases whose medical records contained clinical, radiographic, histopathological, follow-up data of at least six months. Results There was a mild preference for the male with a mean age of 22.8 years. Seventy-seven percent of the lesions occurred in the posterior region of the mandible, presenting a multilocular radiolucent aspect (54%) with one presenting symptomatology. Conservative treatment was performed in all patients initially and r…

A review of 640 Oral squamous cell carcinoma cases in Nigeria

2016

Background Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most prevalent malignant neoplasm in the oral cavity and accounts for 70% to 90% of all oral malignant neoplasms. The aim of this study was to examine the demographic distribution of OSCC in five Tertiary Health centres in Nigeria. Material and methods All cases diagnosed as OSCC during the period from 1970 -2014 were retrieved from the records of five teaching hospitals in Nigeria. Hematoxylin and eosin stained histological slides of all cases that had a diagnosis of OSCC were reviewed for confirmation and inclusion. Data from all the centers was collated at the University College Hospital, Ibadan by 2 researchers. The data was entered …

Evaluation of treatment outcomes in a 3 years post-graduate orthodontic program using the peer assessment rating (par)

2014

Objectives: To maintain high treatment quality it is important to evaluate orthodontic treatment results using objective methods. Outcome assessments allow private practitioners and university students to evaluate their results and raise the level of treatment outcomes. The aim of this study was to assess the orthodontic treatment outcome in a post-graduate orthodontics program in the University of Valencia (Spain) and to determine whether the treatment outcome is related to several factors as gender, age at start of the treatment, treatment duration, treatment method, extraction-non extraction treatment and cooperation needed. Material and Methods: A sample of 50 patients treated in the po…

Analgesic and physiological effects in conscious sedation with different nitrous oxide concentrations

2015

Objectives: to study the physiological changes, as well as the psychosedative and analgesic effects of nitrous oxide, in experimental conditions. Study Design: 101 dental students volunteers participated in a single nitrous oxide sedation session without dental treatment. Signs and symptoms were registered during and after the procedure. Pulse rate and hemoglobin oxygen saturation were monitored at: 100 per cent O 2 , 30 per cent N 2 O, 50 per cent N 2 O and 5 minutes after 100 per cent O 2 . A Likert scale was used to evaluate pain perception. The analgesic effects of nitrous oxide were evaluated at: 30 per cent N 2 O, 50 per cent N 2 O, and five minutes postoperatively. Results: Pulse rat…

A case series of intraosseous hemangioma of the jaws : various presentations of a rare entity

2017

Background Hemangiomas of the soft tissue are common in the head and neck area, especially in the tongue and in children under ten years of age. Intraosseous hemangiomas of the mandible and maxilla (IHM), on the other hand, are exceedingly rare and are not well characterized. This study presents six IHM cases focusing on the clinical, radiographic, and histologic characteristics. Material and Methods Six cases of IHM were retrieved from the archives of the Biopsy Services at the University of Washington. Clinical, radiologic, and histologic findings are described. Results A total of six cases of IHM were reviewed. The patient age range was 16 to 65; the group comprised three females and thr…

Unusual microscopic changes of Ameloblastic Fibroma and Ameloblastic Fibro-odontoma : a systematic review

2019

Background Ameloblastic fibroma (AF) and ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) are uncommon benign mixed odontogenic neoplasms. Although unusual microscopic changes including hybrid tumors have been documented in publications, their clinical outcome prediction and treatment modality selection are still challenging due to scarcity. Objective: Analysis of AF/AFO's unusual microscopic variants in order to improve histopathologic diagnosis and to help clinicians in making informed treatment choices. Material and methods An electronic search was performed in PubMed's database using keywords: "ameloblastic fibroma", "ameloblastic fibroodontoma", "ameloblastic fibro-odontoma". The search scheme was li…

Hybrid ameloblastoma and central giant cell lesion : challenge of early diagnosis

2020

Hybrid lesions encompass the occurrence of different entities in one lesion. A 67-year-old woman was referred to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Service for treatment of mandibular Central Giant Cell Lesion (CGCL) previously diagnosed. Intraoral examination revealed edentulism and a painless swelling extending from the alveolar ridge to the buccal vestibule with hard consistency covered by normal mucosae, with unknown duration. Panoramic radiograph revealed a large, multilocular and well-defined radiolucent lesion extending from the region of left mandibular lateral incisor teeth to right mandibular first molar with no evidence of osseous perforation. Initially, a treatment with intrales…

Diagnosis and treatment for central Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma in the mandible: Report of a clinical case in a young patient

2019

A clinical case of a 13 year old male patient with a malignant tumor in the mandibular body area with two years of evolution and associated pain is reported. It was initially diagnosed as low grade central mucoepidermoid carcinoma through Hematoxylin and Eosin (H-E) staining in multiple biopsies. Considering the clinical and radiographic characteristics of the lesion, it was necessary to confirm the diagnosis through Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS). The treatment involved hemimandibulectomy, neck emptying, and complementary radiotherapy. This article aims to present a rare occurrence of this type of intraosseous malignant tumor of glandular origin in a young patient. Key words:Mucoepidermoid car…

Clinicopathologic analysis of 14 cases of odontogenic myxoma and review of the literature.

2016

Background Odontogenic myxoma is a rare benign neoplasm that originates from odontogenic ectomesenchyme. There is no standard of care and recurrences are frequent after conservative surgical procedures. Material and methods A retrospective study conducted at a single cancer center, with analysis of medical records of all patients diagnosed with odontogenic myxoma from 1980 to 2010, along with a literature review. Results There were 14 patients with diagnosis of odontogenic myxoma (OM). Most patients were female (78.6%) and Caucasian (100%), with ages ranging from 7 to 51 years (21.6 ± 11.6 years). The time period between the first symptom and first consultation ranged from 0 to 60 months (1…

Clinical and radiographic features of pycnodysostosis: A case report

2017

Pycnodysostosis is a rare disorder that was first described in 1962; however, it was only in 1996 that the defective gene was discovered, which led to a better understanding of this disease. This study reports and discuss a case of pycnodysostosis. In addition, a search of articles published in PubMed-Medline was performed. The case was a 13-year-old girl who was referred to a private clinic for dental treatment. Clinical examination showed midface hypoplasia, prominent cheeks, a high nasal bridge, beaked nose, spoon-shaped fingers, frontal bossing, open fontanelles and dental alterations, findings compatible with pycnodysostosis. Patients with this disease also suffer from fractures becaus…
