Salivary gland dysfunction (‘dry mouth’) in patients with cancer: a consensus statement

2009

A group of interested professionals was convened to develop some evidence-based recommendations on the management of salivary gland dysfunction (SGD) in oncology patients. A Medline search was performed to identify the literature on SGD. The abstracts of all identified papers were read, and the full texts of all relevant papers were reviewed. The evidence was graded according to the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network grading system for recommendations in evidence-based guidelines. The summary of the main recommendations are: (1) patients with cancer should be regularly assessed for SGD (grade of recommendation - D); (2) the management of SGD should be individualised (D); (3) consid…

Oral manifestations of Diabetes Mellitus. A systematic review

2017

Background: Diabetes Mellitus has become a global epidemic and presents many complications, usually proportional to the degree and duration of hyperglycemia. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the different oral manifestations associated with Diabetes Mellitus. Material and Methods: A MEDLINE search for “Diabetes Mellitus and oral manifestations” was performed. A further search was conducted for “diabetes” and its individual oral manifestation. Inclusion criteria were as follows: human clinical studies with a minimum of 30 patients; studies published in relevant scientific journals between January 1998 and January 2016. Nineteen studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria and…

Incidence of oral health in paediatric patients with disabilities: Sensory disorders and autism spectrum disorder. Systematic review II

2016

Introduction We are currently witnessing an increase in the number of disabled patients, creating the need for knowledge of each of the pathologies and of the different oral and dental conditions they present, in order to achieve efficient management and treatment. Objectives To analyse the existing scientific literature on the oral conditions of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and children with sensory deficits (SD), in comparison with the healthy child population. Material and Methods The bibliographic search was carried out in Pubmed/Medline, Scopus and Cochrane Library and included articles taking a sample of children between 0 and 18 years of age diagnosed with the aboveme…

Dental procedures cause stress in children with cerebral palsy?

2021

Background To evaluate the level of stress during dental care in children and preadolescents with cerebral palsy through biological and psychological parameters. Material and Methods A total of 38 children aged 7 to 12 years were divided into two groups: one with 18 children with cerebral palsy and the other with 20 healthy children (control group). Saliva was noninvasively collected before and after dental care to analyze salivary biomarkers. The Frankl Behavior Scale and the Facial Image Scale were applied. Results After the dental procedure, cortisol levels were significantly higher (p = 0.02) in the cerebral palsy group than in the control group. Salivary alpha-amylase was not significa…

Determinants of HIV outpatient service utilization according to HIV parameters

2014

Introduction : The increased life expectancy of HIV patients in the era of highly active antiretroviral therapy has had profound consequences for the healthcare systems that provide their care. It is useful to assess whether healthcare resources need to be adapted to the different stages of HIV infection or to patient characteristics [1]. To study how patient features influence utilization of out patient services, we retrospectively analyzed the electronic health record of HIV-positive patients who had followed day-care programs at the AIDS Center of the University of Palermo, Italy. Materials and Methods : 223 HIV-infected subjects were recruited and divided into two groups according to CD…

270 Increased hospital mortality in HIV-infected patients with acute coronary or cerebrovascular syndromes. Analysis from a French nationwide hospita…

2011

Background After more than two decades of the AIDS epidemic, the spectrum of HIV-associated vascular diseases has considerably evolved from infectious disease with improved survival, to premature atherosclerosis. As a consequence, acute atherosclerosis complications, such as acute coronary and cerebrovascular syndromes (ACS and CVS) are currently growing. However, only few data are available on HIV-infected patients in the setting of ACS/CVS. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of HIV, as well as the characteristics and hospital case fatality of HIV-infected patients with CVS and ACS. Methods From the French nationwide hospital medical information database, data fro…

Swallowing evaluation with videofluoroscopy in the paediatric population

2017

Radiation protection in paediatrics age

2014

Radiological protection in paediatric population from medical imaging is a subject promoted by various international associations and it is becoming a main field of interest. Paediatric patients have a significant risk from ionizing radiation (IR) following X-ray examination (chest, abdomen and skeletal segments), multidetector CT (MDCT) and PET imaging [1]. Their greater damage’s risk is due to: growing tissues with elevated turnover and high radio sensitivity cellular, the high water content which amplifies the damage, the small body size that involves the exposure of large areas associated with the expectation of long- life makes possible the development of diseases resulting from geneti…

A case report on dental management of a toddler with Pachygyria

2017

Children with special health care needs receive less oral care than the normal population, inspite of the high level of dental diseases among them. They are at an increased risk for oral diseases throughout their lifetime. This paper reports a case of a toddler with congenital unusual thick convolutions of the cortex resulting in a condition called pachygyria. Intra oral examination showed multiple abscesses with poor oral hygiene. As the patient was lacking cooperative ability, treatment of full mouth rehabilitation as needed. The parents were advised for regular dental check-ups and informed about maintenance of good oral hygiene. This case report demonstrates the importance of oral hygie…
