Evaluating the role of dorsolateral prefrontal cortex on recognition memory with rTMS: evidence from healthy subjects and neurological patients

2010

Converging evidence from functional imaging and lesion studies suggested that a distributed neural network comprising the hippocampal formation, medial and lateral parietal regions as well as the prefrontal cortex is involved in episodic memory. Some findings suggested that successful memory formation requires the coordinated modulation of neural activity among these different cortical areas. It appears particularly important to understand the functional interactions between these regions during memory processes. My talk will be focused on the prefrontal contribution to verbal and non-verbal recognition memory and to familiarity and recollection processes. New evidence will be provided and …

PROGNOSTIC VALUE OF ESTIMATED GLOMERULAR FILTRATION RATE IN HOSPITALIZED ELDERLY PATIENTS

2013

A multicenter observational study, REPOSI (REgustri POliterapie Società Italiana di Medicina Interna), was conducted to assess the prognostic value of glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) on in-hospital mortality, hospital readmission and death within 3 months, in a sample of elderly patients (n=1,363) admitted to 66 internal medicine and geriatric wards. Bases on eGFR, calculated by the new Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) formula, subjects at hostpital admission were classified into three groups: group 1 with normal eGFR (60 ml/min/1.73m2, reference group), group 2 with moderately reduced eGFR (30-59 ml/min/1.73 m2) and group 3 with severely reduced eGFR (<30 ml/m…

Histopathologic diagnosis in the era of new and old yeast infections in critical ill surgical patients

2014

Several antifungals are currently available for management of invasive fungal infections (IFI), but this exacerbating infectious disease still presents difficulties, especially in the case of opportunistic infection occurring in individuals with seriously impaired defense mechanisms or in multimorbid patients. Patients who undergo complex surgical procedures with or without immunosuppressive therapy are at increased risk for invasive fungal infections. Supplemental procedures for diagnosis, such as indirect monitoring of pathophysiology of the infection, have become a more important and practical way for management of the disease. In this regard, histopathologic and/or cytopathologic examin…

Fungal infections in transplantation patients

2003

Invasive fungal infections have became one of the principal obstacles to successful solid organ and bone marrow transplantation. The natural history and incidence of systemic fungal infection varies with the type of organ transplanted and the immunosuppressive therapy administered; the majority of infections occur within the first two months after transplantation. The most common fungi that cause disease in transplant recipients are Candida spp. and Aspergillus spp. The clinical presentations of fungal infections in solid-organ transplant recipients are non specific and often overlap with other infectious and non infectious processes; for this reason it's important maintain a high index of …

Giant incisional hernia in the ederly patient. A Rapid and simple surgical technique

2007

Objectives The aim is to obtain a) a safe procedure to repair the large abdominal defect and reinforce the fragile zones around; b) a simple and rapid technique to reduce the operation time. Materials And Methods Retrospective review of medical records of 72 elderly patients in whom intraperitoneal mesh placement was used between January 1988 and June 2005. Results No intraoperative complication occurred. In the postoperative stage 7 seromas, 4 haematomas, 2 infections occurred, all solved with conservative treatment. Conclusion The incidence of incisional hernia (IH) vary between 1% and 15 %, with increasing risk of recurrence in relation to the age of patients, wound infection, obesity an…

Urinary collagen cross-links to evaluate hyperparathyroidism in kidney transplant patients

2008

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: One of most common complication following kidney transplantation is reappearance of hyperparathyroidism (HP) some months after normal serum levels. An early diagnosis represents the best prophylaxis measures to prevent worsening of osteodystrophy and potential damage to the graft and vascular tissue. The aim to our study was to evaluate, beyond the common HP markers, if the urinary cross-links of the collagen PYD (pyridinoline) and DPD (Deoxypyridinoline) are useful markers able to show increasing levels of parathormone. METHODS: We evaluated 50 stable kidney transplanted patients divided into 2 group (A: 38 pts and B: 12 pts) dependent on the type of their immunosuppr…
