Non-abusing mothers’ agency after disclosure of the child’s extra-familial sexual abuse
2020
This qualitative study analysed the agency of eight non-abusing mothers in the Turkish Cypriot Community after disclosure that their child had been sexually abused by someone outside the family. The aim was to discover how, after disclosure, such mothers act to protect their children in the contexts of their family and community. The data were gathered via semi-structured in-depth interviews and analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). In the nuclear family context, maternal agency emerged in the form of motherhood skills, including emotionally supporting the abused child, double-checking the child’s safety or limiting the child’s mobility, and controlling the actions…

Impact of organisational practices and language on an international business cooperation : the case of a German-Slovakian corporation
2015
In the course of the EU integration process, Slovakia became a target of choice for German investors. The percentage of German foreign direct investment has increased sharply since 1995. A growing number of German small to medium sized enterprises discover Slovakia as profitable location for outsourcing and offshoring. However, little is known about German-Slovakian corporations and expatriate management in Slovakia. The aim of the study is to get an understanding of the impact of organisational culture and language on one specific case of a German-Slovakian business cooperation. During the study, the research question is divided into three sub-questions: How is the organisational culture c…

Managing the repatriation of professionals following overseas assignment
2017
Despite decades of research about culture shock, and latterly but not to the same extent, reverse culture shock, it seems that little is understood about how to manage the process of repatriation after an overseas assignment in the commercial world. Attrition rates of repatriates leaving their employers within the first year following their return continue to rise as those individuals consistently report feeling undervalued by their employers. This study is concerned with how best to manage the process of repatriation from the employees’ point of view. It therefore looks at how a group of repatriating Finns from various professional backgrounds perceived the effects of reverse culture shock…
Re-entry issues and challenges of Finnish repatriates : study of corporate expatriates, employees of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and employees …
2015
This study provides an insight to the re-entry and re-adaptation experiences of three different privileged, voluntary, temporary groups of Finnish professionals. The main goal for the qualitative research was to find greater understanding of the re-entry phenomenon, and outline and identify the most important aspects of the home country re-entry process of the chosen sojourner groups. In addition, the study aimed to clarify possible differences and similarities of the re-entry experiences between these groups. The study was mainly based on the repatriation adjustment model of Black, Gregersen, and Mendenhall from 1992, although theories and studies of various other academic scholars were al…
Men will be Men? : Masculinities on display in the Facebook communication practices of Pakistani men
2021
In the past decade, the popularization of social media in Pakistan has greatly influenced the way in which people communicate and interact with each other. The rapidly evolving nature of online social media communication in the country when viewed against the backdrop of the country’s socio-cultural characteristics and religion is particularly significant. Facebook, being the prime social media platform in Pakistan has been revolutionary and liberating because while acting as a medium of communication, which transgresses the traditional manner of gendered social interactions, it has at the same time enabled the users to perpetuate and reinforce the existing gender ideology. As a result, Fac…
