The Sacralization of Martyric Death in Romanian Legionary Movement: Self-sacrificial Patriotism, Vicarious Atonement, and Thanatic Nationalism

2016

ABSTRACTThe paper explores the radical morphing of Romanian patriotism in the aftermath of the Great War within the Legionary movement. It shows, first, how the war martialized the rhetoric of self-sacrificial patriotism articulated discursively during the second part of the long nineteenth century that accompanied the making of the Romanian national statehood. Second, the paper focuses on unraveling the postwar cultural matrix that made possible a radical, self-sacrificial, patriotism to emerge within the Romanian Iron Guard’s fascist worldview. Within the Legion’s redemptive political theology, the wartime national patriotism aiming at redeeming the nation by making the Greater Romania wa…

Śródziemnomorskie kody polskości w twórczości Jana Parandowskiego

2020

One is used to regarding Jan Parandowski (1895–1978) as a great connoisseur of the ancient world and a kind of “Olympic” writer with a distance to his own time and space. A thorough exam-ination of his literary essays, short stories and novels hardly proves this opinion. Treating Polish his-tory and culture, especially of the Renaissance epoch, as originating from and inspired by the ancient Roman/Greek tradition (“Poland is situated in the Mediterranean”), he conceals at the same time an evidently emotional approach to national legacy. There are several modes in which he evokes unique Polish history in the 19th century, with the great but problematic heritage of Romanticism as well as the …

PROMOTION OF YOUTH INVOLVEMENT FOR EARLY SCHOOL LEAVING PREVENTION

2020

Among the main challenges of contemporary education system are raising the motivation to study, strengthening the bond between the student and the school and prevention of early school leaving. In Latvia as well as in the rest of Europe the percentage of early school leavers still remains high. According to Eurostat data the percentage of students having left school early in Latvia reached 8% in 2018. Moreover the Baltic Social studies stated that altogether 26% of schools have faced the problem of early school leavers. Among the main factors reported as the reason for early school leaving are  lack of motivation and risks related to school environment. Using the competency-based learning m…

Patriotism and pluralism: identification and compliance in the post-national polity

2009

The paper discusses the identity-building power and motivational force of patriotism. The basic idea underlying the discussion is that far from being a mere irrational and destructive force, patriotism is an expression of ‘existing human social identity.’ Thus, it argues that rather than dismissing patriotism altogether as an undesirable and/or irrational phenomenon, we need to understand how to discriminate between alternative forms of patriotism while investigating what constitutional reforms might be required to support those forms of patriotic identification that are morally desirable. I argue that to flourish, desirable forms of patriotism (what I call Ethical Patriotism) r…

Improving Civic and Citizenship Education in Latvia

2021

The chapter characterizes citizenship education in Latvia within the national education system and on the level of public interest and involvement. The article particularly focuses on a large school education reform carried out in Latvia since 1991. The chapter concludes with recommendations for further research in the field of citizenship education in Latvia, as well as for policymakers. As regards possible policy changes, the author suggests raising civic competence, and replacing the sometime exaggerated manifestations of patriotism with awareness about security issues, individual and democratic values, and the sense of belonging at different levels. In addition, an aim should be to enha…

«History’s stained canvas»: Uses and appropriations of medieval past in Enlightenment Historiography. The case of Peter «the cruel»

2020

The aim of this paper is to explore the political meanings of the medieval past in the historical understanding of individuals in the 18th century. Beyond the familiar Gothic myth, I will focus on the multilayered image of the monarch Peter of Castile (1334–1369), considered cruel, lustful and passionate in the eyes of enemies and historians. The aim is to analyse the different attitudes towards and uses of this historical figure (one that was quite problematic given the cultural values of the period), ranging from the most negative of connotations to the most passionate of defences and including some more ambiguous stances. For this analysis, I will explore certain Enlightenment debates th…

Civil Religion or Nationalism? The National Day Celebrations in Norway

2021

The Norwegian National Day (17 May, also referred to as Constitution Day) stands out as one of the most popular National Day celebrations in Europe. According to surveys, around seven out of every 10 Norwegians take part in a public celebration during this day. This means that the National Day potentially has an impact on the way people reflect upon national identity and its relationship to the Lutheran heritage. In this paper, I will focus on the role religion plays in the Norwegian National Day rituals. Researchers have described these rituals as both containing a significant religious element and being rather secularized. In this article, I discuss the extent to which the theoretical con…
