Quantum Solitons on Quantum Chaos: Coherent Structures, Anyons, and Statistical Mechanics

1991

This paper is concerned with the exact evaluation of functional integrals for the partition function Z (free energy F = -β -1 ln Z, β -1 = temperature) for integrable models like the quantum and classical sine-Gordon (s-G) models in 1+1 dimensions.1–12 These models have wide applications in physics and are generic (and important) in that sense. The classical s-G model in 1+1 dimensions $${\phi _{xx}} - {\phi _{tt}} = {m^2}\sin \phi$$ (1) (m > 0 is a “mass”) has soliton (kink, anti-kink and breather) solutions. In Refs 1–12 we have reported a general theory of ‘soliton statistical mechanics’ (soliton SM) in which the particle description can be seen in terms of ‘solitons’ and ‘phonons’. The …

Soliton topology versus discrete symmetry in optical lattices

2005

We address the existence of vortex solitons supported by azimuthally modulated lattices and reveal how the global lattice discrete symmetry has fundamental implications on the possible topological charges of solitons. We set a general ``charge rule'' using group-theory techniques, which holds for all lattices belonging to a given symmetry group. Focusing in the case of Bessel lattices allows us to derive also a overall stability rule for the allowed vortex solitons.

Kuznetsov-Ma Soliton Dynamics in Nonlinear Fiber Optics

2012

The Kuznetzov-Ma (KM) soliton is a solution of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation derived in 1977 but never observed experimentally. Here we report experiments showing KM soliton dynamics in nonlinear breather evolution in optical fiber.

Spectral incoherent solitons: a localized soliton behavior in the frequency domain

2008

We show both theoretically and experimentally in an optical fiber system that a noninstantaneous nonlinear environment supports the existence of spectral incoherent solitons. Contrary to conventional solitons, spectral incoherent solitons do not exhibit a confinement in the spatiotemporal domain, but exclusively in the frequency domain. The theory reveals that the causality condition inherent to the nonlinear response function is the key property underlying the existence of spectral incoherent solitons. These solitons constitute nonequilibrium stable states of the incoherent field and are shown to be robust with respect to binary collisions.

Existence and dynamics of pairs of temporal cavity solitons weakly-bound through kelly sidebands in a passive optical fiber resonator

2015

We report experimental observations of weaklybound states of temporal cavity solitons, with separations of 10 soliton widths and beyond, in a 100-m single mode fiber cavity. Bound state dynamics has been studied using the real time dispersive Fourier transform technique for roundtrip-byroundtrip measurements. Temporal oscillations in the cavity soliton background, associated with the presence of Kelly sidebands, have been identified as the binding mechanism.

Supercontinuum to solitons: New nonlinear structures in fiber propagation

2010

We review our recent work in the field of optical rogue wave physics and applications. Beginning from a brief survey of the well-known noise and incoherence processes in optical fiber supercontinuum generation, we trace the links to recent developments in studying the emergence of high contrast localised breather structures in both spontaneous and induced nonlinear instabilities. In the latter case, we discuss our recent measurements that have reported the experimental observation of the Peregrine soliton, a unique class of rational soliton predicted to exist over 25 years ago and never previously observed.

Stable coupled conjugate solitary waves in optical fibers.

1998

Four-wave mixing of an intense continuous-wave pump beam with an ultrashort soliton signal in an optical fiber is theoretically analyzed. A novel class of stable two-color coupled solitary waves is found. These vector parametric solitons represent the optimal frequency conversion of an ultrashort pulse. © 1998 Optical Society of America.

Incoherent solitons generated in instantaneous response nonlinear Kerr media

2004

We show theoretically and experimentally in an optical fiber system, that incoherent domain wall solitons can be generated spontaneously from incoherent light, despite of the instantaneous response of the fiber Kerr nonlinearity.

Non-existence of dark solitons in a nonlinear Schrödinger-Maxwell-Bloch fibre system

2000

We consider the coupled system of nonlinear Schrodinger and Maxwell-Bloch (NLS-MB) equations, which govern the nonlinear pulse propagation in erbium doped optical fibres. With the help of the Painleve singularity structure analysis, we prove the non-existence of optical solitons in the NLS-MB fibre system in the normal dispersion regime.
