Pre- and post-ictal brain activity characterization using combined source decomposition and connectivity estimation in epileptic children

2019

In this research, the study of functional connectivity between sources of electroencephalogram (EEG) activity assessed for different classes (well before seizure, preictal and post-ictal) was performed. EEG recordings were acquired from 12 subjects with focal epilepsy. Then, ten common spatial patterns (CSP) were obtained for EEG segments describing 95% of Riemannian distance between pairs of classes, followed by estimation of multivariate autoregressive (MVAR) models’ coefficients. The MVAR models were further used to extract coherence as a functional connectivity measures. Our results show that the coherence between CSP sources differs between baseline and pre-ictal segments: it has the l…

Multivariate Frequency Domain Analysis of Causal Interactions in Physiological Time Series

2011

A common way of obtaining information about a physiological system is to measure one or more signals from the system, consider their temporal evolution in the form of numerical time series, and obtain quantitative indexes through the application of time series analysis techniques. While historical approaches to time series analysis were addressed to the study of single signals, recent advances have made it possible to study collectively the behavior of several signals measured simultaneously from the considered system. In fact, multivariate (MV) time series analysis is nowadays extensively used to characterize interdependencies among multiple signals collected from dynamical physiological s…

Virally Infected Mouse Liver Endothelial Cells Trigger CD8+ T-Cell Immunity

2009

Background & Aims Dendritic cell activation through ligation of pattern recognition receptors leading to full functional maturation causes induction of CD8 + T-cell immunity through increased delivery of costimulatory signals instead of tolerance. Here we investigate whether organ-resident antigen-presenting cells, such as liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs), also switch from tolerogenic to immunogenic CD8 + T-cell activation upon such stimulation. Methods Murine LSECs were isolated by immunomagnetic separation and analyzed for functional maturation upon triggering pattern recognition receptors or viral infection employing gene expression analysis and T cell coculture assays. In vivo…

Cancer cell–autonomous contribution of type I interferon signaling to the efficacy of chemotherapy

2014

International audience; The immune system is routinely confronted with cell death resulting from the physiological turnover of renewable tissues, as well as from pathological insults of several types. We hypothesize the existence of a mechanism that allows the immune system to discriminate between physiological and pathological instances of cell death, but the factors that determine whether cellular demise is perceived as a neutral, tolerogenic or immunogenic event remain unclear 1. Infectious insults are accompanied by so-called microbe-associated molecular patterns (MAMPs), i.e., viral or bacterial products that activate immune cells through a panel of pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs)…

Application of deep convolutional neural networks for the detection of anthracnose in olives using VIS/NIR hyperspectral images

2021

Abstract Anthracnose is one of the primary diseases that affect olive production before and after harvest, causing severe damage and economic losses. The objective of this work is to detect this disease in the early stages, using hyperspectral images and advanced modelling techniques of Deep Learning (DL) and convolutional neural networks (CNN). The olives were artificially inoculated with the fungus. Hyperspectral images (450–1050 nm) of each olive were acquired until visual symptoms of the disease were observed, in some cases up to 9 days. The olives were classified into two classes: control, inoculated with water, and fungi composed of olives inoculated with the fungus. The ResNet101 arc…

Adaptative air traffic network: Statistical regularities in air traffic management

2016

Starting from traffic data on flights trajectories-planned and actual ones-in Europe, we build a navigation point network. We study this network which exhibits different features for different European countries. In particular, some countries uses a high number of navpoints, facilitating the planning of the flight plan by air companies at the cost of higher concentrations of traffic in few nodes. Making use of the deviations from the planned trajectories, we find that once again different countries have different control procedures with respect to traffic management. Interestingly, we find that some countries tend to make more deviations when the traffic conditions are low. Moreover, they t…

Extracellular Vesicle-Mediated Cell–Cell Communication in the Nervous System: Focus on Neurological Diseases

2019

Extracellular vesicles (EVs), including exosomes, are membranous particles released by cells into the extracellular space. They are involved in cell differentiation, tissue homeostasis, and organ remodelling in virtually all tissues, including the central nervous system (CNS). They are secreted by a range of cell types and via blood reaching other cells whose functioning they can modify because they transport and deliver active molecules, such as proteins of various types and functions, lipids, DNA, and miRNAs. Since they are relatively easy to isolate, exosomes can be characterized, and their composition elucidated and manipulated by bioengineering techniques. Consequently, exosomes appear…

Assessing movie similarity using a multilayer network model

2021

International audience; This work investigates the movie similarity issue. A multilayer network model capturing various aspects of the story is built from movie scripts. Based on this representation, movies are compared not from summary or actors but using their storyboard. We rely on the "Portrait divergence" to quantify distances between graph characteristics. We illustrate the effectiveness of this approach in comparing movie series.

A deep learning approach for the segmentation of myocardial diseases

2021

Cardiac left ventricular (LV) segmentation is a paramount essential step for both diagnosis and treatment of cardiac pathologies such as ischemia, myocardial infarction, arrhythmia and myocarditis. However, this segmentation is challenging due to high variability across patients and the potential lack of contrast between structures. In this work, we propose and evaluate a (2.5D) SegU-Net model based on the fusion of two deep learning segmentation techniques (U-Net and Seg-Net) for automated LGE-MRI (Late gadolinium enhanced magnetic resonance imaging) myocardial disease (infarct core and no-reflow region) quantification in a new multifield expert annotated dataset. Given that the scar tissu…
