A Clustering Approach to texture Classification

In the paper a clustering technique to segment an image in to “homogeneous” regions is studied. The homogeneity of each region is evaluated by means of a “proximity function” computed between the pixels. The main result of such approach is that no-histogramming is required in order to perform segmentation. Possibilistic and probabilistic approaches are, also, combined to evaluate the significativity of the computed regions.

The present work is focused on a global image characterization based on a description of the 2D displacements of the different shapes present in the image, which can be employed for CBIR applications.To this aim, a recognition system has been developed, that detects automatically image ROIs containing single objects, and classifies them as belonging to a particular class of shapes.In our approach we make use of the eigenvalues of the covariance matrix computed from the pixel rows of a single ROI. Cluster kernels for semisupervised classification of VHR urban images

In this paper, we present and apply a semisupervised support vector machine based on cluster kernels for the problem of very high resolution image classification. In the proposed setting, a base kernel working with labeled samples only is deformed by a likelihood kernel encoding similarities between unlabeled examples. The resulting kernel is used to train a standard support vector machine (SVM) classifier. In pattern recognition, the choice of features to be detected is a critical factor to determine the success or failure of a method; much research has gone into finding the best features for particular tasks [1]. When images are detected by digital cameras, they are usually acquired as rectangular arrays of pixels, so the initial features are pixel values. Some methods use those pixel values directly for processing, for instance in normal matched filtering [2], whereas other methods execute some degree of pre-processing, such as binarizing the pixel values [3].

Real-time Sub-pixel Cross Bar Position Metrology

Many measurement application fields need to calculate cross bar intersection locations of horizontal and vertical bars. The system we developed and that we present in this paper is an embedded system that measures cross bar positions with sub-pixel accuracy on 1024×1024 pixel images delivered by a camera at a 50 MHz data rate in real time. This is done using an algorithm that looks for intersection areas and then locally calculates two lines representing horizontal and vertical bars. Speckle interferometry is a technique adequate to metrological problems such as the measurement of object deformation. An automatic system of analysis of such measurements is given; it consists of a motorized x-y plate positioner controlled by computer, a CCD video camera, and software for image analysis. A fringe-recognition algorithm determines the spacing and orientation of the fringes and permits the calculation of the magnitude and direction of the displacement of the analyzed object point in images with variable degrees of illumination. A Comparative Study on Feature Selection for Retinal Vessel Segmentation Using FABC

This paper presents a comparative study on five feature selection heuristics applied to a retinal image database called DRIVE. Features are chosen from a feature vector (encoding local information, but as well information from structures and shapes available in the image) constructed for each pixel in the field of view (FOV) of the image. After selecting the most discriminatory features, an AdaBoost classifier is applied for training. The results of classifications are used to compare the effectiveness of the five feature selection methods.

Unsupervised recognition of retinal vascular junction points.

Landmark points in retinal images can be used to create a graph representation to understand and to diagnose not only different pathologies of the eye, but also a variety of more general diseases. Aim of this paper is the description of a non-supervised methodology to distinguish between bifurcations and crossings of the retinal vessels, which can be used in differentiating between arteries and veins. Image descriptors are widely adopted structures to match image features. SIFT-based descriptors are collections of gradient orientation histograms computed on different feature regions, commonly divided by using a regular Cartesian grid or a log-polar grid.
