A trie-based approach for compacting automata

International audience; We describe a new technique for reducing the number of nodes and symbols in automata based on tries. The technique stems from some results on anti-dictionaries for data compression and does not need to retain the input string, differently from other methods based on compact automata. The net effect is that of obtaining a lighter automaton than the directed acyclic word graph (DAWG) of Blumer et al., as it uses less nodes, still with arcs labeled by single characters.

Abstract: Parasite-mediated selection may contribute to the maintenance of genetic variation at host immune genes over long time scales. To date, the best evidence for the long-term maintenance of immunogenetic variation in natural populations comes from studies on the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes, whereas evidence for such processes from other immune genes remains scarce. SHREC'12 Track: 3D mesh segmentation

International audience; 3D mesh segmentation is a fundamental process in many applications such as shape retrieval, compression, deformation, etc. The objective of this track is to evaluate the performance of recent segmentation methods using a ground-truth corpus and an accurate similarity metric. The ground-truth corpus is composed of 28 watertight models, grouped in five classes (animal, furniture, hand, human and bust) and each associated with 4 ground-truth segmentations done by human subjects. 3 research groups have participated to this track, the accuracy of their segmentation algorithms have been evaluated and compared with 4 other state-of-the-art methods.

A prefix normal word is a binary word with the property that no substring has more 1s than the prefix of the same length. This class of words is important in the context of binary jumbled pattern matching. In this paper we present results about the number \(\textit{pnw}(n)\) of prefix normal words of length n, showing that \(\textit{pnw}(n) =\Omega\left(2^{n - c\sqrt{n\ln n}}\right)\) for some c and \(\textit{pnw}(n) = O \left(\frac{2^n (\ln n)^2}{n}\right)\). On the ontogeny and orientation of the Triassic Conodont P1-element in Pseudofurnishius murcianus Van den Boogaard, 1966

Successive growth stages of P1-elements in the Middle to early Late Triassic species Pseudofurnishius murcianus allows the observation of a detailed ontogeny. Besides the gradual enlargement of its curved blade and the growing number of its denticles, a small internal platform develops, eventually followed by an external one, both bearing denticles. The number of denticles on the blade and internal platform increases from five and one in the smallest specimens, respectively, to 14 and 9 in fully developed ones, whereby the distribution pattern of platform-denticles, on the inner one in particular, is of great morphological variety. Patterns and causes of incongruence between plastid and nuclear Senecioneae (Asteraceae) phylogenies

One of the longstanding questions in phylogenetic systematics is how to address incongruence among phylogenies obtained from multiple markers and how to determine the causes. This study presents a detailed analysis of incongruent patterns between plastid and ITS/ETS phylogenies of Tribe Senecioneae (Asteraceae). This approach revealed widespread and strongly supported incongruence, which complicates conclusions about evolutionary relationships at all taxonomic levels. The patterns of incongruence that were resolved suggest that incomplete lineage sorting (ILS) and/or ancient hybridization are the most likely explanations. NOD-like receptors (NLRs) constitute a recently identified family of intracellular pattern recognition receptors which contains more than 20 members in mammals. Some of the NLRs, the NALP subfamily, constituted from 14 members, many of them without actual identified role, form multiproteic complex known as inflammasome, that initiate inflammation by processing inactive pro-caspase-1 to its active form, allowing the cleavage and subsequent activation of pro-IL-1β and pro-IL-18. We review the identified roles of NLRs in pathologies and argue for the role of inflammasome in the development of cardiovascular diseases. Dwarf fan palm (Chamaerops humilis L.) is an important Mediterranean species well known for many uses such as gardening, environmental restoration, and technological uses. Dwarf fan palm is usually propagated from seed, which takes up to 100 days to germinate. The germination pattern of dwarf palm seeds was studied during a 100-days length period in relation to different pre-sowing treatments (hot water, sulphuric acid, or mechanical scarification) in comparison to untreated control.
