Habitat type and island identity as drivers of community assembly in an archipelago
2020
Aim: Ecoinformatics offer new opportunity to test islands as biogeographic and eco- logical models. In this paper we predicted three hypotheses: (1) plot-based data issu- ing from vegetation surveys can be used to predict Island Species-Area Relationships (ISARs) or island similarity; (2) the habitat area is an independent predictor of species richness patterns within island; (3) species richness and composition are more de- pendent on habitat type than island identity in land-bridge islands. Area: Tuscan Archipelago, Italy. Methods: We assembled a database of all the vegetation plots available for the archi- pelago. For the first hypothesis we calculated ISARs, using Arrhenius model, and B…
Mitigation of urban flooding: A simplified approach for distributed stormwater management practices selection and planning
2005
The urbanization process and the hydraulic insufficiency of drainage systems are two of the most common causes of urban flooding. In some technical regulations, distributed stormwater management practices (DSMPs) are regarded as a solution for urban flooding problems. They can prevent the formation of runoff, dispose of it locally, or dampen its peak before it reaches the drainage system. Due to their diffuse localization and the wide number of available solutions, the evaluation of their efficiency in terms of flood reduction is very difficult. The methodology proposed in the present paper relies on the concept that the mitigation effects of DSMPs can be expressed as a function of the chan…
Early warning thresholds for partially saturated slopes in volcanic ashes
2013
Rainfall-induced landslides in steep soil slopes of volcanic origin are a major threat to human lives and infrastructure. In the context of constructing early warning systems in regions where extensive data on landslide occurrences and associated rainfall are inexistent, physically-based tools offer the possibility to establish thresholds for measurable field quantities. In this paper, a combined finite element infinite slope model is presented to study the transient hydraulic response of volcanic ash slopes to a series of rainfall events and to estimate seasonal safety factors. Furthermore, analytical considerations of partially saturated infinite slopes are made to define capillary stress…
“Mouth Actions as Gestures in Sign Language” pp 104-123
2008
The present study investigates the nature of mouth actions in Italian Sign Language (LIS) and shows how the manual and the oral modality can be integrated when the visual-gestural channel is chosen for communication. Finally, the role played by mouth actions in sign language will be investigated and paralleled to co-speech gestures by re-working Kendon’s continuum in order to show how orality could become gestural when co-occurring with signing.
Evaluating similarity measures for gaze patterns in the context of representational competence in physics education
2018
The competent handling of representations is required for understanding physics' concepts, developing problem-solving skills, and achieving scientific expertise. Using eye-tracking methodology, we present the contributions of this paper as follows: We first investigated the preferences of students with the different levels of knowledge; experts, intermediates, and novices, in representational competence in the domain of physics problem-solving. It reveals that experts more likely prefer to use vector than other representations. Besides, a similar tendency of table representation usage was observed in all groups. Also, diagram representation has been used less than others. Secondly, we evalu…
Harmonic growth: a new approach to the measurement of countries development
2009
The paper defines harmonic growth as a situation of diffuse well-being associated to an increase of GDP, and proposes a measures of time series similarity between GDP and each one from a set of social and economic indicators of development. Such indexes are then synthesized in order to provide the global degree of harmony in growth inside a country. A first Harmonic Growth Index is based on comparisons between couples of polynomials fitting the series. The second version of the index is obtained from cubic B-splines estimates. With an accurate selection of social indicators, both indexes can also be used to rank countries according to their level of development, offering effective complemen…
Zero-shot Semantic Segmentation using Relation Network
2021
Zero-shot learning (ZSL) is widely studied in recent years to solve the problem of lacking annotations. Currently, most studies on ZSL are for image classification and object detection. But, zero-shot semantic segmentation, pixel level classification, is still at its early stage. Therefore, this work proposes to extend a zero-shot image classification model, Relation Network (RN), to semantic segmentation tasks. We modified the structure of RN based on other state-of-the-arts semantic segmentation models (i.e. U-Net and DeepLab) and utilizes word embeddings from Caltech-UCSD Birds 200-2011 attributes and natural language processing models (i.e. word2vec and fastText). Because meta-learning …
A Comprehensive Model for Hydraulic Analysis and Wetting Patterns Simulation under Subsurface Drip Laterals
2022
In the absence of suitable specialized models to simulate the soil wetting patterns in subsurface drip irrigation systems considering the hydraulic conditions along the laterals, a new model was developed and named a “comprehensive model” in this study. This model couples the subsurface drip irrigation lateral characteristics with the soil hydraulic properties and utilizes the Hydrus-3D software as a complementary section of the model to simulate the wetting front beneath the lateral. To evaluate the model, three 16 mm drip-line pipes of 62 m length with 20, 40, and 50 cm spacing emitters and 2 to 5 L/h discharge were buried at 0.2 m depth in a soil box containing clay loamy soil. Then, the…
