Introduction of New Headwords Related to Covid-19 Pandemics in Online English Dictionaries
2022

Patterns of Use of English Synonymous Medical Terms: the Case of Disease and Illness. A Corpus-Based Study
2010
It often happens that terms defined by dictionaries as synonyms have different patterns of use. An example of this phenomenon is represented by the terminological pair disease/illness in medical discourse. The behaviour of these commonly used terms will be an object of discussion in this study. The work is divided into two main sections. The first part takes into account the information included in conventional dictionaries, both bilingual and monolingual, generic and specialized, in order to see if the terms in question are described as perfectly interchangeable or as having different uses depending on the context. Some dictionaries highlight the use, both specific and generic, respectivel…
Diversity of Isomerization Patterns and Protolytic Forms in Aminocarbene PdII and PtII Complexes Formed upon Addition of N,N′-Diphenylguanidine to Me…
2017
Reaction of the palladium(II) and platinum(II) isocyanide complexes cis-[MCl2(CNR)2] [M = Pd, R = C6H3(2,6-Me2) (Xyl), 2-Cl-6-MeC6H3, cyclohexyl (Cy), t-Bu, C(Me)2CH2(Me)3 (1,1,3,3-tetramethylbuth-1-yl abbreviated as tmbu); M = Pt, R = Xyl, 2-Cl-6-MeC6H3, Cy, t-Bu, and tmbu] with N,N′-diphenylguanidine (DPG) leads to DPG-derived metal-bound deprotonated acyclic diaminocarbene (ADC) species. This reaction occurs via a two-step process, involving the initial coupling of the guanidine with one of the isocyanides and leading to deprotonated monocarbene monochelated species, while the next addition grants the deprotonated bis-carbene bis-chelated metal compounds. DPG behaves as nucleophile, depr…
Automated Checking of Flexible Mathematical Reasoning in the Case of Systems of (In)Equations and the Absolute Value Operator
2021
We present an approach and a tool for automatically providing feedback on solutions that involve complicated reasoning patterns. Currently the tool supports linear systems of equations and inequations that may also contain the absolute value operator and a restricted form of rational functions. This suffices for designing problems that are laborious to solve with standard mechanical procedures, but much easier using short-cuts that students may find by creative thinking. Earlier research has found that struggling with important mathematics promotes conceptual development. Our goal is to encourage students to such struggling. A crucial feature is to give them great freedom to choose the path…
Subtropical streams harbour higher genus richness and lower abundance of insects compared to boreal streams, but scale matters
2018
Aim: Biological diversity typically varies between climatically different regions, and regions closer to the equator often support higher numbers of taxa than those closer to the poles. However, these trends have been assessed for a few organism groups, and the existing studies have rarely been based on extensive identical surveys in different climatic regions. Location: We conducted standardized surveys of wadeable streams in a boreal (western Finland) and a subtropical (south-eastern Brazil) region, sampling insects identically from 100 streams in each region and measuring the same environmental variables in both regions. Taxon: Aquatic insects. Methods: Comparisons were made at the scale…
Biało-czarny świat Ervina Goja
2011
The author takes up the language Ervin Goj’s poetry, a regional lachian poet who has written his poems between the years 1931-1977 under the pen name Óndra Łyhorsky. She analyses the meaning of two colours, namely white and black, which in the European culture symbolize the opposition light – dark, good – bad: white symbolizes innocence, truth, purity, simplicity, honesty, while black symbolizes evil, falsehood, nothingness, mourning, atonement. It is associated with everyday human experience which is reflected in the language and is connected with the following patternsprototypes: white – day (bílý den), black – night (černá noc), for example: bílá holubice, bílé světlo, bílá vrána, černé …

Indicadores de actividad científica en investigadores singulares: perfil bibliométrico de Eduardo Primo Yúfera, expresidente del CSIC
2012
[EN] Eduardo Primo Yúfera was the founder of the Institute of Agrochemicals and Food Technology (IATA-CSIC) and was its director until being appointed president of the Spanish National Research Council. He is considered both patron and promoter of the fields of food science and technology and chemical ecology in Spain, as well as pioneer of the innovation system model (R+D+i). Throughout his long research career, which lasted 65 years, he published 291 scientifi c papers, with an average of 4.48 papers per year. Of these, 89.3 % were in collaboration with others: a total of 161 different coauthors. His efforts to disseminate science led him to create the Revista de Agroquímica y Tecnología d…
Exposure to cytotoxic concentrations of manganese and effects on development
2009
Manganese is one of the most abundant metals present in nature in trace amounts, which is accumulated and utilized by all forms of life. It plays a multitude of biological roles, but exposure of cells/organisms to high levels causes toxicity. In the marine environment, increasing concentrations of bio-available ions often result from anthropogenic activities, and, consequently, manganese represents a new emergent factor in environmental contamination. To study cyto-toxicity of manganese on development, we used an excellent model system as sea urchin embryos Paracentrotus lividus. In this work, we show results from two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE) analysis that highlighted qualitati…
