Assimilation, reflexivity, and therapist responsiveness in group psychotherapy for social phobia: A case study.
2017
Objective: This case study examined reflexivity and the assimilation of problematic experiences, especially its progress within and between the Assimilation of Problematic Experiences Scale (APES) Stages 2–3, in group psychotherapy for social phobia. Method: The data consisted of all of one client's turns expressing the two voices of her main problematic experience in 12 sessions, and all replies by the therapist in direct connection to them. The client's utterances were rated on the APES. Results: A detailed analysis of 13 conversational passages revealed that progress in assimilation happened only when the client took a reflexive stance towards her inner experience or outer actions. There…
Dairy Consumption and Incidence of Breast Cancer in the 'Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra' (SUN) Project.
2021
Dairy products might influence breast cancer (BC) risk. However, evidence is inconsistent. We sought to examine the association between dairy product consumption—and their subtypes—and incident BC in a Mediterranean cohort. The SUN (“Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra”) Project is a Spanish dynamic ongoing cohort of university graduates. Dairy product consumption was estimated through a previously validated 136-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Incident BC was reported in biennial follow-up questionnaires and confirmed with revision of medical records and consultation of the National Death Index. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated with Cox regression …
Hereditary angioedema caused by missense mutations in the factor XII gene: clinical features, trigger factors, and therapy.
2009
Background Hereditary angioedema caused by mutations in the factor XII gene is a recently described disease entity that occurs mainly in women. It differs from hereditary angioedema caused by C1 inhibitor deficiency. Objective To assess the clinical symptoms, factors triggering acute attacks, and treatments of this disease. Methods Thirty-five female patients with hereditary angioedema and the factor XII mutations p.Thr309Lys and p.Thr309Arg who came from 13 unrelated families were studied. The observation period was 8.4 years on average (range, 2-26 years). Results Patients had on average 12.7 ± 7.9 angioedema attacks per year. Recurrent facial swellings occurred in all patients; skin swel…
Systemic, environmental and lifestyle risk factors for dry eye disease in a mediterranean caucasian population
2022
Abstract Objectives To assess systemic, environmental and lifestyle risk factors for dry eye disease (DED) in a Mediterranean Caucasian population. Methods A cross-sectional study was performed on 120 Caucasian participants aged between 18 and 89 years (47.0 ± 22.8 years). Medical history, information regarding environmental conditions and lifestyle, Ocular Surface Disease Index, Dry Eye Questionnaire-5, non-Invasive (Oculus Keratograph 5 M) breakup time, tear film osmolarity and ocular surface staining parameters were assessed in a single clinical session to allow DED diagnosis based on the guidelines of the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society Dry Eye Workshop II Diagnostic Methodology Re…
Menopause and ovariectomy cause a low grade of systemic inflammation that may be prevented by chronic treatment with low doses of estrogen or losarta…
2009
Abstract The incidence of cardiovascular diseases in premenopausal women is lower than in men or postmenopausal women. This study reports the discovery of a low grade of systemic inflammation, including monocyte adhesion to arterial endothelium, elicited by menopause or estrogen depletion. Chronic treatment with low dose of 17-β-estradiol or inhibition of the renin-angiotensin system reduced this inflammation. Using an in vitro flow chamber system with human arterial and venous endothelial cells, we found that leukocytes from healthy postmenopausal women were more adhesive to the arterial endothelium than those from premenopausal women regardless of the stimulus used on endothelial cells. I…
Strength training induced adaptations in neuromuscular function of premenopausal women with fibromyalgia: comparison with healthy women.
2000
Objective—To investigate the eVects of 21 weeks’ progressive strength training on neuromuscular function and subjectively perceived symptoms in premenopausal women with fibromyalgia (FM). Methods—Twenty one women with FM were randomly assigned to experimental (FMT) or control (FMC) groups. Twelve healthy women served as training controls (HT). The FMT and HT groups carried out progressive strength training twice a week for 21 weeks. The major outcome measures were muscle strength and electromyographic (EMG) recordings. Secondary outcome measures were pain, sleep, fatigue, physical function capacity (Stanford Health Assessment Questionnaire), and mood (short version of Beck’s depression inde…
Neuromuscular performance and body mass as indices of bone loading in premenopausal and postmenopausal women.
2009
The strong association between body mass and skeletal robusticity has been attributed to increasing skeletal loading with increasing mass. However, it is unclear whether body mass is merely a coarse substitute for bone loading rather than a true independent predictor of bone strength. As indices of neuromuscular performance, impulse and peak power were determined from vertical ground reaction force during a maximal counter movement jump test in 221 premenopausal and 82 postmenopausal women. Bone compressive (BSI(d) g(2)/cm(4)) and bending (SSImax(mid) mm(3)) strength indices were measured with peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) at the distal ((d)) and midshaft ((mid)) sites …
Older age and markers of inflammation are strong predictors of clinical events in women with asymptomatic carotid lesions
2007
OBJECTIVE: Limited information exists regarding the association between markers of inflammation, such as high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and fibrinogen, and adverse events in postmenopausal women with subclinical atherosclerosis. Therefore, we investigated the prognostic impact of traditional risk factors and inflammation on adverse cardiac events in women with asymptomatic carotid lesions. DESIGN: We studied 250 postmenopausal women who were free of cardiovascular disease. Traditional cardiovascular risk factors were investigated, and laboratory analysis included measurement of plasma lipids, fibrinogen, and hs-CRP. The early phases of carotid atherosclerosis were assessed by …
Analysis of serum and endometrial progesterone in determining endometrial receptivity.
2021
Abstract STUDY QUESTION Is there a relationship between serum and endometrial progesterone (P4) levels, including P4 and metabolites (oestrone, oestradiol and 17α-hydroxyprogesterone), and endometrial receptivity? SUMMARY ANSWER Serum P4 levels were not correlated with endometrial P4, nor associated with endometrial receptivity as determined by the ERA® test; however, endometrial P4 and 17α-hydroxyprogesterone levels were positively correlated and related to endometrial receptivity by ERA. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Acquisition of endometrial receptivity is governed by P4, which induces secretory transformation. A close relationship between serum P4 and pregnancy outcome is reported for hormone …
Is avoidance of surgery possible in patients with perimenopausal ovarian tumors using transvaginal ultrasound and duplex color Doppler sonography?
1993
A total of 108 cases of small perimenopausal ovarian tumors (largest diameter, less than 7 cm) were evaluated by transvaginal sonography and duplex color Doppler sonography; 101 had criteria for benignity and 7 for malignancy. All cysts were punctured and aspirated to avoid unnecessary surgery (benign cases) and establish the cytologic diagnosis as well as to avoid the risk of leakage (malignant cases). Recurrence rate of benign punctured cysts was 25% within 1 year of follow up. No difference in recurrent rate was seen between pre- and postmenopausal patients (19 of 56 cases in the premenopausal group, and five of 28 cases in the postmenopausal group). The larger the cyst, the greater the …
