Two-year prospective, randomized trial comparing an innovative twice-a-week progestin regimen with a continuous combined regimen as postmenopausal ho…
1999
Abstract Objective: To compare compliance, symptom control, bleeding patterns, endometrial response, and lipid changes in postmenopausal women treated with transdermal E 2 and a regimen of either intermittent or continuous dosing of progestin. Design: Randomized, prospective study. Setting: Menopausal Outpatient Clinic at an academic tertiary care hospital. Patient(s): One hundred women who had reached menopause naturally and had been amenorrheic for at least 1 year. Fifty women were randomly assigned to receive each regimen. Intervention(s): All patients received 50-μg E 2 patches and medroxyprogesterone acetate, either 5 mg twice per week or 2.5 mg daily. The bleeding pattern was register…
Catechol-O-Methyltransferase Gene Polymorphism Is Associated with Skeletal Muscle Properties in Older Women Alone and Together with Physical Activity
2008
BackgroundMuscle strength declines on average by one percent annually from midlife on. In postmenopausal women this decrement coincides with a rapid decline in estrogen production. The genetics underlying the effects of estrogen on skeletal muscle remains unclear. In the present study, we examined whether polymorphisms within COMT and ESR1 are associated with muscle properties and assessed their interaction and their combined effects with physical activity.Methodology/principal findingsA cross-sectional data analysis was conducted with 434 63-76-year-old women from the population-based Finnish Twin Study on Aging. Body anthropometry, muscle cross-sectional area (mCSA), isometric hand grip a…
Prevention and treatment of cystitis during menopause: efficacy of a nutraceutical containing D-mannose, inulin, cranberry, bearberry, Olea europaea,…
2020
Aim of the study: To evaluate the efficacy of a nutraceutical compound containing Uticlin® (D-mannose, cranberry, bearberry, Olea europaea), inulin, Orthosiphon and Lactobacillus acidophilus, in preventing recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) in menopausal women. Material and methods: This was a prospective cohort study of menopausal women recruited with a history of recurrent UTIs in the previous twelve months and who intended to treat their bladder problem without the use of antibiotics and/or anti-inflammatories. Women were proposed the use of an oral nutraceutical compound. The drug was taken for ten days, every month. Women were assigned to two parallel cohorts: patients using (gr…
Women, thrombosis, and cancer: A gender-specific analysis.
2017
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a major common complication in cancer patients. Risk-adapted thromboprophylaxis and antithrombotic therapy for patients diagnosed with VTE can reduce the recurrence of VTE events. Thrombotic risk varies according to cancer type, stage, and comorbidities. The current review analyzes most recent data and provides clinical guidance for the management of women with cancer-associated thrombosis.
Diagnosis of Endometrial Carcinoma: Predictive Value of Transvaginal Color Doppler
1995
The objective of this study was to determine whether transvaginal ultrasound plus color Doppler flow improve the ability to diagnose endometrial carcinoma and allow better discrimination between benign and malignant endometrial lesions. One hundred thirty women with abnormal uterine bleeding were evaluated with transvaginal color Doppler before fractional dilatation and curettage (D&C). The endometrial line thickness and endometrial characteristics were evaluated by endosonography. The resistive and pulsatile indices of the uterine arteries and of the endometrium were evaluated with transvaginal color Doppler. Following D&C and tissue diagnosis, women were divided into two groups, 62 with a…
Vitamin D levels in Mediterranean breast cancer patients compared with those in healthy women
2018
To evaluate the vitamin D status of postmenopausal women with early estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer and to compare it with that of healthy postmenopausal women from the same Mediterranean region. STUDY DESIGN AND OUTCOME MEASURES: Data from 691 breast cancer (BC) patients in the B-ABLE cohort were analyzed after recent cancer intervention (recent-BC) or after a minimum of two years since this intervention (long-term-BC). Patients were also stratified by previous chemotherapy exposure (ChT+ and ChT-). Plasma levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] (25(OH)D) were compared with data from 294 healthy women (non-BC) by linear regression to estimate β-coefficients using non-BC participan…
Three-dimensional hysterosonography for the study of endometrial tumors: comparison with conventional transvaginal sonography, hysterosalpingography,…
1997
We studied endometrial thickness and homogeneity in 36 patients with postmenopausal bleeding using three-dimensional ultrasound following distention of the uterine cavity with a sterile saline solution (3D-SHSG). Results with 3D-SHSG were compared with findings using transvaginal sonography, transvaginal sonohysterography, transvaginal color Doppler, and hysteroscopy. Sixteen patients (including three on tamoxifen) were undergoing hormone therapy at the time when they were studied. Visualization of the uterine cavity and of endometrial thickness was better with 3D-SHSG than with any of the other ultrasound techniques. The results with 3D-SHSG corresponded to the findings observed with hyste…
Real-world Adherence and Persistence with Bisphosphonate Therapy in Postmenopausal Women: A Systematic Review
2018
Abstract Purpose Bisphosphonate therapy is a well-established and effective treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis and the prevention of osteoporotic fracture. However, poor adherence to and poor persistence with bisphosphonate therapy may reduce its benefits. Previous studies have documented the poor rates of adherence and persistence among postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. The objective of this systematic literature review was to evaluate adherence, persistence, and the impact of adherence and persistence on fracture risk in postmenopausal women with diagnosed osteoporosis. Methods Articles eligible for review included observational studies of the real-world use of bisphosphonate…
Improved femoral neck BMD in older Finnish women between 2002 and 2010.
2013
Abstract Purpose The number of hip fractures among Finns over 50-years of age rose constantly between 1970 and 1997, but since then, there has been a nationwide decline in incidence of hip fractures. One possible explanation, although not the only one, for the declining fracture rates, could be improved bone mineral density (BMD). The aim of this study was to evaluate differences in femoral neck BMD between older Finnish women born about a decade apart. Methods We compared the baseline data of two population-based samples of home-dwelling 70–80-year-old women who were initially recruited in exercise intervention studies ( N = 216 in Cohort1, and N = 389 in Cohort 2). Femoral neck BMD was …
Effect of aerobic exercise on insulin resistance and central adiposity disappeared after the discontinuation of intervention in overweight women
2016
Purpose: This study aimed to assess whether the benefits of exercise on central adiposity and insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) are maintained after discontinuation of intervention in the overweight/obese (OWOB) women. Methods: The study subjects were from 2 independent studies with similar aerobic exercise (AE) intervention programs. In study I, 15 OWOB postmenopausal women with pre-diabetes (body mass index, BMI = 24–33 kg/m2 , aged 52–65 years) completed an 8-month exercise intervention and were followed for 2 years after the intervention. In study II, 12 OWOB (BMI = 25–35 kg/m2 , aged 30–50 years) premenopausal women participated in a 6-week AE and were followed for 4 years after the interve…
