Last Millennium hydro-climate variability in Central–Eastern Europe (Northern Carpathians, Romania)

2015

Proxy-based reconstructions of climate variability over the last millennium provide important insights for understanding current climate change within a long-term context. Past hydrological changes are particularly difficult to reconstruct, yet rainfall patterns and variability are among the most critical environmental variables. Ombrotrophic bogs, entirely dependent on water from precipitation and sensitive to changes in the balance between precipitation and evapotranspiration, are highly suitable for such hydro-climate reconstructions. We present a multi-proxy analysis (testate amoebae, plant macrofossils, stable carbon isotopes in Sphagnum, pollen, spores and macroscopic charcoal) from …

HOLOCENE CLIMATE AS REFLECTED BY A MALACOLOGICAL SEQUENCE AT VERRIERES FRANCE

2008

Though numerous analyses have been made of Holocene pollen sequences, they come from similar environmental contexts, mainly peat deposits. Land snails can provide good palaeoecological and palaeoclimatical data in different drier environmental settings. The Verrieres deposits, located in the Seine Valley, southeast of Paris, provide rich and abundant malacofaunas. We compare the well–defined local biostratigraphy with other mollusc stratigraphies from Burgundy, the closet site to the studied region. Multivariate analysis of the malacofaunas indicates that temperature and moisture did not always vary in parallel during the Holocene. On the other hand, Verrieres malacofaunas reflect the main …

Phenotype Correlation and Intergenerational Dynamics of the Friedreich Ataxia GAA Trinucleotide Repeat

1997

Summary The Friedreich ataxia (FA) mutation has recently been identified as an unstable trinucleotide GAA repeat present 7–22 times in the normal population but amplified as many as > 1, 000 times in FA. Since it is an autosomal recessive disease, FA does not show typical features observed in other dynamic mutation disorders, such as genetic anticipation. We have analyzed the GAA repeat in 104 FA patients and 163 carrier relatives previously defined by linkage analysis. The GAA expansion was detected in all patients, most (94%) of them being ho-mozygous for the mutation. We have demonstrated that clinical variability in FA is related to the size of the expanded alleles: milder forms of the …

Vegetation fire emissions and their impact on air pollution and climate

2009

Gaseous and particulate emissions from vegetation fires substantially modify the atmospheric chemical composition, degrade air quality and can alter weather and climate. The impact of vegetation fire emissions on air pollution and climate has been recognised in the late 1970s. The application of satellite data for fire-related studies in the beginning of the 21th century represented a major break through in our understanding of the global importance of fires. Today the location and extent of vegetation fires, burned area and emissions released from fires are determined from satellite products even though many uncertainties persist. Numerous dedicated experimental and modeling studies contri…

A novel noise figure and gain test set for microwave devices

2002

A new instrument for the measurement of noise and gain of microwave devices is presented. It differs from the commercial ones in the accomplishment of the gain measurement and is also useful for measuring mismatched devices such as transistors, The instrument is driven via HP-IB by a PC and a user-friendly virtual panel is designed to perform all the required operations. Also included is the possibility of removing the second-stage noise contribution and correcting various sources of error (source ENR variations, temperature variations, etc.). The test set provides a very good accuracy for both matched and mismatched devices, usually limited by source ENR accuracy and step attenuator repeat…

A low repeat length in oligodendrocyte chromatin

1985

Abstract: The behavior of oligodendrocyte chromatin after micrococcal nuclease digestion of nuclei was assayed in brains of rats of four different ages. During oligodendrocyte differentiation, a decreasing sensitivity of the chromatin to enzymatic attack was observed. On the other hand, the nucleosomal repeat length showed a slight tendency to increase during development. It is worth noting that even the highest values reported here for “oligodendrocyte’ chromatin repeat lengths are significantly lower than 200 base pairs, the value previously reported by others for “non‐astrocytic glia.” Copyright © 1985, Wiley Blackwell. Genetic relationships between sympatric and allopatric Coregonus ciscoes in North and Central Europe

2021

Abstract Background Sympatric speciation along ecological gradients has been studied repeatedly, in particular in freshwater fishes. Rapid post-glacial ecological divergence has resulted in numerous endemic species or ecologically distinct populations in lakes of the temperate zones. Here, we focus on the Baltic cisco (Coregonus albula) complex, to study the genetic similarity among two pairs of sympatric autumn- and spring-spawning populations from post-glacial German Lakes Stechlin and Breiter Luzin. For comparison, we included a similar pair of sympatric populations from the Swedish Lake Fegen. We wanted to explore potential genetic similarities between the three sympatric cisco populati…

Plant colonization of bare peat surface - relative importance of seed availability and soil

1992

A field survey on two former peat harvesting sites of similar successional age revealed a marked difference in species composition and a 30-fold difference in biomass of the established vegetation Based on this observation, a field experiment in which the substrate was changed between sites was conducted to examine whether the differences in revegetation were mainly a consequence of differences in seed supply or in substrate quality After three growing seasons, a many hundred-fold difference in plant biomass existed between the transplanted and control plots with the same substrate, but only a small difference between the plots with a different substrate within the site Biological activity …

Effects of artificial plant cover on plant colonization of a bare peat surface

1992

. This paper describes the effect of artificial plant cover on plant colonization of a bare peat surface, resulting from peat harvesting. Plant species colonization was compared on plots supplied with plastic models simulating Vaccinium vitis-idaea plants and plots without this artificial cover. After two growing seasons, species composition and total biomass of the established plant cover were similar in the two plot types. However, the number of established seedlings in the plots with artificial cover was significantly higher than that in the plots without cover. Out of 13 species observed four differed significantly in their performance on the two plot types. Betula spec. had both higher…
