PEDIATRIC OSAS TREATED WITH ADENOIDECTOMY: A COHORT STUDY CONDUCTED AT THE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL OF PALERMO, ITALY
2021
The incidence of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) in the pediatric population is about 2%. The diagnosis is based on the employment of questionnaires, and polysomnography (PSG) that is the gold standard also among children. The PSG allows to classify OSAS as mild in case of 110. If polysomnography is not available, we need alternative diagnostic tests such as nocturnal oximetry studies and respiratory polygraphy. The risk factors identified are different from adults, first tonsillar hypertrophy wins over others. The symptoms and signs described are similar to adult population, but sleep enuresis, neurocognitive impairment and behavioral problems (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disor…
Global Trends in Scientific Research on Pediatric Obesity
2022
(1) Introduction: The aim of this study was to analyze scientific production, collaboration among countries, and research topics focusing on pediatric obesity. (2) Methods: The papers that were included in the study were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection from Clarivate Analytics. A bibliometric analysis of several focuses, including journals of publication, subject categories, most frequent author keywords, and journal impact factors, was conducted. Social network analysis was used to recognize collaboration groups between countries and the co-occurrences of author keywords. (3) Results: A total of 12,171 research articles were published in 2036 journals classified under a v…
Oral lichen planus in children: An Italian case series
2023
Oral lichen planus usually occurs in adults; there are no clear data regarding the incidence and the clinical features of oral lichen planus in children. This paper reports clinical findings, treatments, and outcomes of 13 Italian patients with oral lichen planus in childhood diagnosed between 2001 and 2021. The most common finding was keratotic lesions with reticular or papular/plaque-like patterns, confined to the tongue in seven patients. Although oral lichen planus in childhood is rare and the malignant transformation index is unknown, specialists must be aware of its characteristics and oral mucosal lesions must be correctly diagnosed and managed.

New Insights Into Causal Pathways Between the Pediatric Age-Related Physical Activity Decline and Loss of Control Eating: A Narrative Review and Prop…
2020
Research consistently suggests that loss of control (LOC) eating in children and adolescents is a key factor contributing to pediatric obesity and eating disorders. However, causes of pediatric LOC eating are yet unclear, and there is a lack of longitudinal research investigating the developmental processes contributing to LOC eating and related outcomes in youth. Physical activity is an understudied behavior that declines during middle childhood to adolescence and may exert an influence in the development of LOC eating via its impact on executive functioning. While physical activity levels and executive functioning have been linked to regulation of eating, no research has examined the mech…

Bloodstream Infection Incidence of Different Central Venous Catheters in Neonates: A Descriptive Cohort Study
2017
Central venous catheters (CVCs) in neonates are associated with a risk of central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI). Most reports on the incidence of CLABSI in neonates focus on umbilical venous catheters (UVCs) and peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs). We evaluated the incidence and risk factors for CLABSI in a cohort of neonates with femoral venous catheters (FVCs), UVCs, and PICCs, with a gestational age ≥34 weeks born between January 1, 2006 and June 30, 2013. We included 2,986 neonates with a total of 656 catheters. The CLABSI incidence rate varied from 12.3 per 1,000 catheter-days in FVCs to 10.6 per 1,000 catheter-days in UVCs and 5.3 per 1,000 catheter-days …
Meeting the 24-h movement guidelines and health-related outcomes among youth with autism spectrum disorder: a seven-country observational study
2023
Abstract Background Meeting daily guidelines for physical activity, screen time, and sleep duration is associated with a host of health indicators for youth. In this cross-sectional observational study, we investigated the associations between adherence to the movement guidelines and health-related outcomes among youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Methods Parents of youth with ASD (10–17 years) from seven countries and regions were invited to provide online proxy-reports for child’s movement behaviors (i.e., physical activity, sleep and screen time), and health-related outcomes (i.e., body mass index [BMI], general health, and quality of life). A series of multiple linear regression…
The Occurrence of Diseases and Related Factors in a Center for Asylum Seekers in Italy
2016
Italy is the main recipient of asylum seekers in the European region, and Sicily is their first point of arrival. This geographical position creates a large job for Health Authorities to identify and deal with the health of immigrants. This study evaluates the prevalence of disease among asylum seekers, assessing which are associated factors.A cross-sectional study was conducted to analyse demographic and clinical data in an Acceptance Centres for Asylum Seekers from February 2012 to May 2013. All variables that were found to be significant on unvariable analysis for the most frequent pathologies were included in a multivariable logistic regression model.Post-traumatic stress disorders with…
