Morphogenetic characteristics of chernozem leached in mining enterprises pollution conditions

The article presents the results of comparative studies on the uncontaminated (virgin) leached chernozem soil in terms of heavy metal contamination due to zinc plant operations. Study object location is given. The territory under the influence of plant emissions is devoid of vegetation. Everywhere on the soil surface there are manifestations of deep erosion processes and continuous erosion of the topsoil. Soil cuts with morphogenetic descriptions, physical, physico-chemical and biological characteristics of the soil were laid at the objects. We all have to consider the soil as a good for a human society that is continuously changing and in which the boost toward a continuous economic growth and a rapid technological development, coupled with the progressive increase of the information, often causes considerable and unpredictable changes. The achievement of these goals is based on a sound and comprehensive knowledge of the soils of each country. I wish to welcome the book The Soils of Egypt and to congratulate with the authors.

Abstract Traditional methods for measurement of soil erosion provide information on erosion rates and mechanisms but fail to determine the spatial distribution of sediment redistribution. Recent studies have used carbon (C) stable isotopes to trace sediment and to monitor soil organic carbon (SOC) redistribution. The difference in δ 13 C values in a slope-transect or in a watershed provides information about the source of suspended organic matter and sediment removal and deposition, but miss enough information to quantify sediment loss.
